Apple removed Musi on September 24, 2024, after an unresolved dispute involving YouTube and alleged intellectual-property violations. The app remained unavailable in all 173 storefronts tested on August 6, 2026.
A March 16, 2026 federal ruling also dismissed Musi’s contract lawsuit against Apple with prejudice. Existing installations may still work in some circumstances, but users who delete the app, replace their phone, or lose access should not assume that they can download it again.
The backlash was about losing access—not an iOS update automatically deleting Musi
Some Musi users said they would delay updating their iPhones after Apple removed the app from the App Store on September 24, 2024. The documented event was a delisting, not proof that an iOS system update universally erased Musi from phones.
That distinction matters. Apple’s own position in the litigation was that people who already had Musi installed could continue streaming, although the company could no longer offer the app for new downloads. In practice, users could still lose access if they deleted or offloaded the app, changed devices, or encountered compatibility problems. There is no authoritative Apple guarantee that every installed copy would continue working indefinitely.

The app has not returned. A storefront test published on August 6, 2026, found Musi – Simple Music Streaming unavailable in all 173 tested App Store storefronts. On March 16, 2026, a federal judge dismissed Musi’s contract lawsuit against Apple with prejudice, substantially weakening the prospect of a return through that case.
What was Musi?
Musi was an iPhone music-streaming app developed and operated by Musi Inc. It drew from publicly available content on YouTube’s website and presented that listening experience through its own app. The service became popular with users who wanted music playback and playlist functionality without using YouTube’s standard interface.
Ars Technica reported that Musi displayed its own advertisements and offered a one-time $5.99 payment to remove them. Apple filings cited in that reporting placed Musi’s advertising revenue above $100 million between January 2023 and spring 2024, while describing a company with no more than about 10 employees. Those figures came from public reporting and Apple’s litigation position; they were not independently audited figures established by the court.
Why was Musi controversial?
The dispute centered on how Musi accessed and monetized YouTube-hosted content. The court’s summary of the pleadings records several competing allegations and denials:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- In April 2021, YouTube complained that Musi accessed non-public interfaces, used YouTube commercially, and placed its own advertising around an experience primarily based on YouTube content.
- YouTube renewed its complaint in March 2023.
- Several music-industry parties escalated complaints to Apple in April 2024.
- A Sony Music letter alleged that Musi sourced Sony music from YouTube without authorization, circumvented YouTube’s technical protections, and failed to pay creators or rights holders.
- A National Music Publishers’ Association letter alleged that Musi used YouTube’s API while serving Musi’s advertising instead of YouTube’s advertising.
Musi denied YouTube’s allegations and argued that the claims were unsubstantiated. It also argued that it was entitled to sell advertising over YouTube content streamed through its app. These positions are important because the allegations were part of the litigation record; they should not be rewritten as a final judicial finding that every claim was proven.

What the court actually decided
The 2026 ruling did not conduct a full trial to determine whether every allegation by Apple, YouTube, Sony, or music publishers was true. It decided that Musi’s contract claims failed under the language of Apple’s Developer Program License Agreement, or DPLA.
According to Judge Lee’s order, the DPLA allowed Apple to stop marketing, offering, and permitting end users to download an application “at any time, with or without cause,” as long as Apple provided notice. The court found that Musi had alleged—and did not dispute—that Apple gave the required notice.
That made Musi’s breach-of-contract theory untenable under the agreement. The complaint was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the district-court action was terminated rather than dismissed temporarily with permission to file an amended version.

The decision substantially weakens the chance that Musi will return to the App Store through this lawsuit. It does not establish that Apple can remove every app in every circumstance without legal risk. The outcome turned on the governing contract language, the notice issue, and the claims Musi brought before the court.

Did an iOS update delete Musi?
There is no evidence in the supplied reporting that an iOS system update automatically deleted Musi from every user’s iPhone. The documented action was Apple’s App Store removal.
Apple treats system updates and app updates as separate mechanisms. App Store apps normally update automatically by default, and users can turn off automatic app updates or update them manually. On current iOS versions, app-update controls are generally found at Settings > Apps > App Store > App Updates. System-update controls are separate, under Settings > General > Software Update. Labels and paths can vary slightly by iOS version.
Turning off automatic app updates would not restore a delisted app. Nor would it guarantee that an installed copy of Musi would keep working. Reports from users in the Musi subreddit describe problems involving offloading, reinstalling, transferring the app, or losing access after device changes, but those reports are anecdotal. They support the narrower conclusion that some users feared losing the app—not a claim that iOS universally removed it during an update.
What Musi users should know before changing devices
| Situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Musi is already installed and still works | It may continue to work, but neither the court record nor Apple’s support documentation guarantees indefinite operation. Device state, app compatibility, and service-side changes can affect it. |
| The app was deleted or offloaded | Reinstallation is not reliably available through the App Store because Musi remains delisted. |
| You are buying a replacement iPhone | Assume that Musi may not transfer in a usable form. A new device can create a reinstallation problem even if the old phone still runs the app. |
| You are considering an iOS update | The evidence does not show that an update universally deletes Musi. Avoiding security updates still creates a security and compatibility trade-off. |
If Musi is important to you, the cautious steps are to avoid deleting or intentionally offloading a working copy, make ordinary backups of your personal data, and prepare a replacement listening service before changing phones. Do not assume that a backup, a device-to-device transfer, or a VPN will restore an App Store listing. The research does not establish that third-party app-transfer methods are safe, supported, or guaranteed to work.
Most importantly, delaying iOS security updates solely to preserve an app is not a risk-free solution. The user reaction explains why some fans considered it, but it is not a general recommendation to disable updates.

Is Musi still available?
The latest availability record in this research says no. Apple Censorship’s App Store Monitor identified the app as Musi – Simple Music Streaming, bundle ID com.feelthemusi.musi, developed by Musi Inc. Its August 6, 2026 test found the app unavailable in all 173 monitored storefronts and calculated a 98.86% worldwide unavailability rate within its monitored population.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That monitor also cautions that an app’s unavailability does not, by itself, prove censorship. In this case, the documented history points to a dispute-based App Store delisting and subsequent litigation, not proof of a universal iOS deletion event.
Lawful alternatives for listening on an iPhone
No replacement exactly reproduces Musi’s interface, business model, or relationship with YouTube content. The most relevant alternatives depend on whether your priority is access to YouTube’s catalog, background listening, downloads, or a supported ad-free music library.
| Service | Relevant features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music | YouTube’s official help documentation says the ad-supported service supports on-demand playback. | Listeners who want a service connected to YouTube’s music catalog and can tolerate advertising. |
| YouTube Music Premium | The Premium tier adds background play, ad-free music, audio-only playback, and downloads. YouTube’s official description of YouTube Premium includes the full YouTube Music experience, along with ad-free YouTube, background listening, and downloads. | Listeners who want background listening and offline music downloads within YouTube’s official subscription ecosystem. |
| Apple Music | Apple describes it as an ad-free subscription with playlists, high-audio-quality options, Spatial Audio, artist content, and access to Apple Music Classical. Apple Support documents lossless playback on iPhone, subject to song availability, network conditions, and compatible audio hardware. | iPhone users who want a supported, ad-free music service integrated with Apple’s platform. |
YouTube Music Premium is the closer functional alternative if background listening, audio-only playback, and YouTube-based discovery are the priorities. Apple Music is the more natural choice for someone who wants an Apple-supported subscription library and does not need Musi’s particular interface. Both are different products from Musi, and both involve their own availability, pricing, and account requirements.
Why the original headline needs careful wording
“Musi fans refuse to update iPhones” is too broad if read literally. The reporting described some users saying they would avoid updates. It did not establish that all Musi users boycotted iOS updates, or that an iOS update itself deleted the app.

Likewise, saying that Apple “blocked a controversial app” can blur several separate facts. Apple removed Musi from the App Store after citing intellectual-property infringement and an unresolved complaint from YouTube. Musi disputed those claims. The later federal decision favored Apple on Musi’s contract case because of the DPLA’s removal language and the notice Apple provided; it was not a blanket judicial ruling that Musi was “illegal.”
There is also no evidence in this record that Musi is definitely coming back, that a VPN restores it, or that third-party transfer tools can safely and reliably reinstall it. The practical reality is simpler and harsher: an existing copy may still work for some people, but replacing a lost copy is difficult because the official App Store route is gone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did an iOS update automatically delete Musi from iPhones?
No. The documented event was Apple removing Musi from the App Store, not an iOS update automatically deleting the app from every iPhone. Some users reported losing access after offloading, reinstalling, transferring, or changing devices, but those reports are anecdotal.
Can I reinstall Musi if I delete it?
Reinstallation is not reliably available through the App Store because Musi remains delisted. An already-installed copy may continue working for some users, but Apple has not provided a guarantee that every copy will remain functional.

Not exactly. The court dismissed Musi’s contract lawsuit with prejudice based on Apple’s Developer Program License Agreement and the notice Apple provided. It did not conduct a full merits trial proving every allegation made by Apple, YouTube, Sony, or music-industry groups.
What are the best alternatives to Musi on iPhone?
The closest supported alternatives are YouTube Music or YouTube Music Premium for YouTube-based discovery, background listening, and downloads, and Apple Music for an Apple-supported ad-free subscription library. Neither reproduces Musi exactly.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Some Musi fans threatened to delay iPhone updates because Apple had delisted the app, but the evidence does not show that an iOS update universally deleted Musi. The app remained unavailable across the 173 storefronts tested on August 6, 2026, and Musi’s contract lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice on March 16, 2026. A working installed copy may survive, but users should not rely on reinstallation, a VPN, or outdated security software; YouTube Music Premium and Apple Music are the most practical supported replacements.
