Joni Mitchell’s music returned to Spotify around March 21–22, 2024, more than two years after she asked the service to remove it. Mitchell had withdrawn her catalog on January 28, 2022, in solidarity with Neil Young and with medical and scientific communities criticizing COVID-19 misinformation associated with content on Spotify. She did not publicly announce a separate reason for restoring the music.
The return followed two important developments: Neil Young restored his own music to Spotify, and Spotify changed Joe Rogan’s arrangement from a Spotify-exclusive distribution deal to a broader partnership that would make The Joe Rogan Experience available on additional platforms. Spotify did not drop Rogan, and there is no public evidence that Mitchell endorsed Spotify’s policies or declared her protest successful.
Why did Joni Mitchell remove her music from Spotify?
On January 28, 2022, Mitchell posted a statement on her official website saying: “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify.” She said irresponsible people were spreading lies that were costing people their lives and that she stood in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities.

Her statement was a protest against the platform’s handling of COVID-19 misinformation. It followed Young’s own demand that Spotify remove his music over concerns about misinformation connected to The Joe Rogan Experience.
Mitchell’s announcement did not identify a particular Rogan episode, request financial compensation, or specify how long the withdrawal would last. It was a public platform-policy protest, not a documented contract dispute between Mitchell and Spotify.

Did Spotify remove Joe Rogan?
No. That is one of the most important distinctions in the story.
In 2020, Spotify described its Rogan arrangement as an exclusive licensing deal. In February 2024, Spotify announced a new multiyear partnership while also saying that the program would become available on additional platforms. The key change was therefore the end of Spotify’s exclusive distribution position—not the end of Rogan’s relationship with Spotify.
Spotify’s January 30, 2022, response also did not amount to removing Rogan. The company said it would add a content advisory directing listeners to a COVID-19 information hub and make its platform rules more visible to creators and publishers. The response showed a change in labeling and policy communication, but Rogan’s show remained available.
When did Joni Mitchell’s music return to Spotify?
Mitchell’s catalog returned around March 21–22, 2024. Major contemporaneous coverage used March 22 as the return date, while the reappearance began around March 21.
The timing came shortly after Young restored his music following more than two years away from the service. Young explained that comparable podcast content was now available through Apple and Amazon, making a Spotify-only boycott less meaningful while still denying his music access to a major listening outlet.

Was every Joni Mitchell recording removed?
Not necessarily. The withdrawal was not perfectly uniform across every release, territory, or rights-controlled edition. Contemporary reporting found that some Geffen-era releases and other material remained available temporarily while the core classic catalog was removed.
For that reason, it is more accurate to say that Mitchell withdrew her catalog from Spotify and that her principal catalog became unavailable—not that every recording disappeared everywhere at exactly the same time.
What Joni Mitchell music is on Spotify now?
Spotify’s current Joni Mitchell artist page lists approximately 2.6 million monthly listeners and displays major albums including:
- Blue
- Clouds
- Song to a Seagull
- Ladies of the Canyon
- For the Roses
- Court and Spark
- Hejira
The page also lists popular tracks such as “California,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Both Sides Now,” “A Case of You,” “Help Me,” and “River.” Spotify’s listings include more than the best-known early albums: 2024 remastered and archival releases, including The Asylum Albums (1976–1980), are also represented.
Availability can still vary by country, rights holder, and release edition. The return of Mitchell’s catalog should not be read as a guarantee that every historical recording, alternate version, compilation, or regional edition is available in every market.
Did Joni Mitchell and Spotify reach a new deal?
There is no verified public evidence in the available reporting that Mitchell signed a new Spotify deal, received a special arrangement, or negotiated a financial settlement to restore her music.

The confirmed facts are narrower: she publicly requested removal in January 2022, her music returned in March 2024, the return followed Young’s restoration and Spotify’s change to Rogan’s distribution arrangement, and Mitchell did not separately explain the decision. Any claim that she accepted Spotify’s content policies or that the platform satisfied her original demands goes beyond the available evidence.
What the Spotify protest revealed about artist power
The episode showed how catalog withdrawal can turn a platform-policy disagreement into a mainstream public story. Mitchell and Young were not merely criticizing Spotify in interviews; they used control of valuable music catalogs to make the criticism visible to listeners, journalists, and the wider music industry.
It also exposed the limitation of a single-platform boycott. With Rogan’s program expanding to competing services, refusing to appear on Spotify no longer isolated the disputed podcast in the same way. An artist who wants the broadest possible audience must weigh the symbolic value of remaining absent against the practical cost of withholding music from millions of listeners on one service.
That is an industry interpretation, not a statement of Mitchell’s private reasoning. The public record supports the sequence of events, but not a definitive account of what persuaded her to return.
Listen digitally or collect the music physically
Mitchell’s return to Spotify makes the streaming catalog easier to access, but physical editions remain an option for listeners who want a permanent copy or a more traditional album experience. Her 1971 album Blue is central to her catalog and is available in current vinyl editions through music retailers and official catalog outlets. Readers who want a physical counterpart to the streaming catalog can look for Joni Mitchell Blue vinyl.
Edition, pressing, packaging, and availability can differ, so buyers should check the seller and release details rather than assume that every listing represents the same master or pressing. Collectors may also find archival LP sets and other Joni Mitchell vinyl releases, including material from later periods of her career.
