What happens in SAS Rogue Heroes Season 2?

Season 2 follows Paddy Mayne, Bill Stirling, David Stirling and the expanding SAS from the end of the North African campaign into Sicily, mainland Italy and the preparations for D-Day. With David imprisoned at Forte di Gavi, Paddy becomes the force’s operational leader while Bill tries to prevent the unconventional unit from being disbanded.

The six-episode season begins with the SAS being reorganized as the Special Raiding Squadron, or SRS, before its deployment to Sicily. It then becomes progressively darker: the men confront mass casualties during the landing, Reg Seekings suffers severe psychological trauma, captured commandos face execution under Hitler’s Commando Order, and the unit is forced to reckon with the human cost of the war. SAS Rogue Heroes Season 2 episode guide and recaps

Episode 1 — January 1, 2025 in the UK | approximately 57 minutes

Recap

Season 2 opens in Cairo with Paddy Mayne requesting compassionate leave to attend his father’s funeral. The request is refused, and Paddy responds in the only way the army has come to expect from him: he attacks the military police and ends up in prison.

Bill Stirling visits Paddy and explains that senior British officers are considering dissolving the SAS now that the desert war is over. Bill’s solution is to reshape the force for the European campaign. The unit is renamed the Special Raiding Squadron and receives new recruits, including Jock McDiarmid and John Tonkin. The reorganization gives the force a new military justification, but it also creates tension between the original men and the newcomers, as well as between the SAS’s rebellious culture and conventional army discipline.

The SRS’s first assignment is the Allied invasion of Sicily. Its task is to neutralize coastal defenses before the main landing force arrives, with the officers making clear that heavy casualties are expected. When the assault begins, Allied soldiers are left struggling in the water. Paddy orders his men not to stop and rescue them, reasoning that breaking formation could jeopardize the entire operation.

The SRS reaches the Sicilian coast, attacks the Italian defenses and captures the position. The victory comes at a moral cost, because Paddy’s decision has left men behind. David Stirling, held in an Italian prisoner-of-war camp, learns that the landing has succeeded.

Why the episode matters

The premiere establishes the season’s main conflict. Bill needs to make the unit acceptable to the army, while Paddy believes its effectiveness depends on refusing ordinary military assumptions. The SRS is not simply given a new name: it is being asked to prove that an irregular force can survive inside a hierarchical wartime machine.

Episode 2 — January 19, 2025 in the U.S. listing | approximately 58 minutes

Recap

The SRS operates around Augusta, Sicily, where Paddy and Bill continue to disagree about tactics and priorities. Paddy’s instinct is to keep control of his men and act decisively; Bill is more concerned with orders, alliances and the political consequences of the unit’s behavior.

The episode introduces friction from several directions. The SRS encounters Italian resistance fighters and personnel from 2 SAS, while local criminal and religious authorities offer uncertain assistance. Paddy distrusts the priest and rejects an attempted alliance with the Cosa Nostra after the local political situation proves treacherous. The episode treats these potential partnerships as liabilities rather than easy shortcuts to victory.

Paddy and Reg Seekings conduct a disguised reconnaissance mission before attacking German forces with bazookas. Paddy also continues to behave abrasively toward the local church, reinforcing how little interest he has in appearing respectable if he believes respectability will compromise the operation.

At Forte di Gavi, Eve Mansour disguises herself as a nun to visit David. Their reunion connects David’s captivity to the fighting in Italy, and Eve makes clear that she intends to move closer to the frontline rather than remain a distant visitor. Bill is increasingly uncomfortable with both Eve’s involvement and the risks she is taking.

By the end of the episode, Paddy takes Jim Almonds with him despite objections. The SRS moves toward its next operation, with Paddy once again putting his own judgment ahead of the chain of command.

Episode 3 — approximately 58 minutes

Recap

The campaign moves to mainland Italy as the Allies plan the liberation of Termoli. The episode’s central threat is Hitler’s Commando Order, which makes captured commandos vulnerable to execution even when they are unarmed or have surrendered. For Paddy’s men, the order changes the meaning of every engagement: capture is no longer a guarantee of survival.

David tries to escape from Forte di Gavi by joining an escape attempt. He argues that his importance makes his escape especially valuable, but the attempt fails when an Italian guard cuts his rope and David falls. He is subsequently placed in solitary confinement.

On the mainland, Paddy and the SRS advance toward Termoli with help from Italian partisans. Pat Riley and resistance contacts conduct reconnaissance and investigate suspected collaborators. The operation becomes increasingly intimate and dangerous as the men fight their way into the town rather than conducting a distant raid.

The battle for Termoli is marked by close-quarters violence. Paddy shows mercy to a mortally wounded German soldier, an important contrast with the brutality the SRS faces from German forces. His compassion does not erase the violence around him, but it complicates the idea that the unit’s survival depends only on aggression.

Why the episode matters

The Commando Order turns the season’s military adventure into a story about unlawful violence and revenge. The SRS is not only fighting an enemy army; it is operating under the knowledge that its captured members may be killed outside the normal rules of war.

Episode 4 — approximately 57 minutes

Recap

The SRS prepares to defend Termoli against the 16th Panzer Division. While Paddy concentrates on the coming battle, Reg Seekings is struggling to function. He cannot sleep and is plagued by intrusive memories connected to the men who drowned during the Sicily landing.

Paddy recognizes that Reg is psychologically exhausted and orders him to remain behind when the unit fights. Away from the immediate battle, Reg forms a bond with an Italian family who run a laundry and with the family’s young son, Matteo. The storyline initially offers a brief pause from the military action, but the war reaches the family anyway.

German shelling destroys the laundry and kills the family. Reg finds Matteo mortally wounded and kills him as an act of mercy. He then attacks the German spotter responsible for directing the shelling. The sequence is one of the season’s most disturbing because it presents Reg’s violence as both compassionate and destructive: he is trying to end a child’s suffering while also acting from accumulated rage.

Eve reaches the frontline carrying flamethrowers intended for Paddy’s men. The weapons help the SRS resist the German advance, but her arrival also underlines the increasingly blurred boundary between intelligence work, logistics and direct combat.

Reg Seekings’ storyline

Reg’s trauma is not treated as a quick subplot that disappears once he returns to action. His insomnia, memories and reaction to Matteo shape the decisions he makes in the next episode. Season 2 uses him to show that the SAS’s victories do not cancel out the psychological damage caused by its methods and missions.

Episode 5 — approximately 57 minutes

Recap

The episode begins with John Tonkin escaping an execution attempt. The SRS then holds a memorial for its fallen comrades, forcing the men to acknowledge the losses that have accumulated since Sicily.

Reg is overwhelmed by the deaths and asks to be placed at the front. He believes that fighting will be easier than enduring another night of memories. Paddy promotes him, although the decision alarms the other men, who can see that Reg is not simply eager for combat; he is trying to escape his own mind.

General Bernard Montgomery visits the SRS and confronts Paddy over discipline, dress and insubordination. Paddy refuses to wear the newly issued red beret, arguing that the SAS is different from ordinary regiments. Montgomery allows him to retain his sand-colored beret on the condition that the unit continues winning. The exchange gives Paddy a form of official recognition without requiring him to surrender the identity that makes the force distinctive.

Montgomery assigns the SAS a new mission to disrupt the Italian rail network north of Florence. During the operation, Paddy challenges Reg not to execute captured German soldiers. Reg cannot kill the prisoners in cold blood, discovering that revenge does not provide the relief he expects.

The German forces, however, execute captured SAS personnel under the Commando Order. Those deaths convince Paddy that the men should return home. His decision is not a retreat from the fight; it is a recognition that continuing to send his men into a situation where surrender means execution has become unacceptable.

What Montgomery’s scene means

Montgomery’s decision over the beret is more than a costume detail. Paddy wants the SAS to remain visibly and culturally separate from conventional regiments. Montgomery’s compromise effectively says that the army will tolerate the unit’s unconventional identity as long as it delivers results. Paddy gains legitimacy without becoming obedient in the conventional sense.

Episode 6 — approximately 57 minutes

Recap

The SAS returns to Britain and begins preparing for the invasion of France. The unit has demonstrated its value in Italy, but its conduct has also created political and military consequences. Bill Stirling’s position is weakened, and the finale deals with the fallout from the unit’s operations as well as the pressure surrounding its future.

David makes another escape attempt from Forte di Gavi. The storyline does not resolve his captivity with a simple successful escape, leaving him associated with a continuing cycle of planning, risk and failure.

Paddy and his men are sent to Scotland for training ahead of the invasion of northern Europe. The season then jumps to June 6, 1944. The SAS flies toward France and parachutes into Normandy to support the D-Day operation.

Season 2 ending explained

Why is the unit called the Special Raiding Squadron?

At the beginning of the season, British command is considering disbanding the SAS because the desert campaign is over and the unit’s unconventional methods are difficult to justify within the regular army. Bill Stirling helps preserve the force by reorganizing it as the Special Raiding Squadron. The new structure gives the men a role in the European campaign, beginning with Sicily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The name change is therefore a survival strategy. Bill is trying to make the unit defensible to commanders who see its indiscipline as a threat, while Paddy continues to believe that independence is the reason the force succeeds.

Does Paddy Mayne win Montgomery’s approval?

Only conditionally. Montgomery objects to Paddy’s conduct and appearance but permits him to keep his sand-colored beret if the unit keeps winning. Paddy receives practical recognition rather than a complete endorsement of his insubordination. The scene captures the compromise at the heart of the SAS: conventional command may tolerate an unconventional unit when its results are valuable enough.

What happens to Reg?

Reg survives the Italian campaign, but he is not emotionally restored by the finale. His experiences in Sicily, Matteo’s death and the executions of captured SAS men leave him psychologically damaged. Paddy’s decision to promote him and send him back into combat provides an outlet for his distress, not a cure for it.

The episode in which Reg refuses to execute captured Germans is significant. He has every reason to want revenge, yet he cannot carry out a killing in cold blood. The choice suggests that his humanity has survived, even though the war has severely altered him.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does David Stirling escape from Forte di Gavi?

The season shows repeated escape attempts, including the failed attempt in which an Italian guard cuts David’s rope. The finale includes another attempt, but it does not present a clean, definitive escape. David’s imprisonment remains a parallel thread rather than receiving a fully resolved ending.

What is Eve doing at the frontline?

Eve Mansour’s movements connect David’s imprisonment with the SRS’s operations in Italy. She visits David while disguised as a nun, then moves toward the frontline with flamethrowers for Paddy’s men. Her role gives the season a civilian and intelligence perspective on the war, while also placing her in increasingly dangerous situations.

Eve is a fictional character. She draws on the tradition of real female wartime intelligence officers, but viewers should not treat her individual story as a direct biography.

Why does the season end in Normandy?

The Italian campaign has shown that the SAS can be useful in Europe, and that success gives the force a future. After returning to Britain, Paddy’s men train in Scotland for the invasion of France. The closing jump to June 6, 1944, shows them parachuting into Normandy to support D-Day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That ending is a bridge to the next stage of the war. Paddy’s leadership has survived, the SAS has avoided disbandment, and the unit is moving into a mission that is larger and more consequential than the raids shown earlier in the season. The personal stories remain intentionally unfinished.

Is SAS Rogue Heroes Season 2 historically accurate?

SAS Rogue Heroes is best understood as a historical drama inspired by real events. The opening disclaimer emphasizes that the series is not a history lesson, and that distinction matters throughout Season 2.

The adaptation uses real figures including:

  • David Stirling, played by Connor Swindells;
  • Paddy Mayne, played by Jack O’Connell;
  • Bill Stirling, played by Gwilym Lee;
  • Dudley Clarke, played by Dominic West; and
  • General Bernard Montgomery, played by Con O’Neill.

It is based on Ben Macintyre’s nonfiction book Rogue Heroes, which chronicles the founding and early history of the SAS. That source gives the series its historical foundation, but the television adaptation compresses events, rearranges encounters and dramatizes private relationships for narrative purposes.

Eve Mansour is specifically fictional, even though the character reflects the broader role played by women in wartime intelligence and resistance work. Other individual scenes, conversations and emotional arcs should likewise be treated as dramatization unless independently documented.

The most useful way to watch the season is to separate its broad historical framework from its scene-by-scene storytelling. The move from North Africa to Sicily and Italy, the struggle to preserve the SAS, the threat posed by the Commando Order and the eventual preparation for Normandy form the season’s historical spine. The precise personal interactions and some of the characters’ journeys are part of the show’s dramatic interpretation.
