To watch a side-by-side (SBS) 3D movie as an ordinary 2D video in VLC Desktop, crop away one of the two views and keep the other. A typical 1920×1080 half-SBS file needs about 960 pixels cropped from one side, followed by an aspect-ratio correction if the remaining picture looks squeezed.

This does not convert the movie into a new 3D format or restore lost resolution. It simply displays one eye’s image as a normal 2D picture.
Before you begin: confirm that the movie is SBS
A side-by-side movie contains two horizontally adjacent images:

- The left-eye view is normally on the left.
- The right-eye view is normally on the right.
Pause the movie on a clear frame and look for the vertical boundary between the two views. If the images are stacked one above the other, the file is top-and-bottom or over-under, not SBS. The instructions below do not apply to that layout: you would crop part of the height rather than part of the width.
Half-SBS versus full-SBS
Identifying the SBS type helps you choose the correct aspect-ratio treatment.

The words “half” and “full” describe the horizontal resolution allocated to each eye. They do not necessarily tell you the total frame size. Check the file’s actual resolution in VLC or your operating system before entering crop values.
Calculating the crop
As a starting point, crop about half of the frame width from one side:

- 1920×1080: crop approximately 960 pixels.
- 3840×2160: crop approximately 1920 pixels.
- 1280×720: crop approximately 640 pixels.
These are starting values, not universal presets. A file may contain black bars, padding, unusual pixel-aspect metadata, or a boundary that is not exactly at the midpoint. Use the visible division between the two images as the final guide.
How to watch a 3D SBS movie in 2D with VLC Desktop
1. Open the movie
In VLC, select Media > Open File, choose the movie, and begin playback. Pause on a frame where the separation between the two views is easy to see.
2. Open VLC’s custom crop controls
Go to Tools > Effects and Filters. Select Video Effects, then open the Crop tab.

Use the custom pixel controls for Left, Right, Top, and Bottom. VLC’s ordinary Video > Crop menu provides preset display ratios, but the Effects and Filters controls are more useful when you need to remove one exact SBS view.
3. Remove one complete eye view
Choose which side to keep:
- To keep the left-hand image, enter the crop value in Right.
- To keep the right-hand image, enter the crop value in Left.
For a 1920-pixel-wide file, begin with 960 in one of those fields. Do not enter 960 in both fields: that would remove both halves of the frame.
Either eye is suitable for ordinary 2D viewing. The two views are usually nearly identical apart from the intended stereo offset. If one side has a subtitle problem, obstruction, damaged frame, or less useful composition, try keeping the other side.
4. Correct the aspect ratio
This is the step that most often determines whether the result looks natural.
For full-SBS
After cropping one half, first try VLC’s default aspect ratio. A full-SBS source commonly leaves one view with its intended widescreen geometry. If the picture still looks wrong, try Video > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 when that matches the source.

A half-SBS source compresses each eye horizontally so that both views fit into the original frame. After cropping, the remaining view may look tall, narrow, or squeezed. It must be displayed wider to recover the intended viewing shape.

- Set Forced Aspect Ratio to 32:9.
- Apply the crop by removing approximately 960 pixels from the left or right side.
- Return to playback and check the geometry.
The 32:9 value compensates for the fact that the crop effect may continue to use the original frame geometry. It is not a universal setting for every SBS file. It is especially associated with a 1920×1080 half-SBS workflow.
If the result is still distorted, clear the forced ratio and try Video > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 after applying the crop. Depending on the VLC release and source metadata, applying the ratio before or after the crop may produce the correct result. Reopen the file or restart playback if VLC does not immediately refresh the geometry.
5. Enter full screen
Use Video > Full Screen or VLC’s full-screen control. The movie should now occupy the display with one normal 2D image rather than two side-by-side views.
6. Reset the effect when you finish
VLC may retain video-effect settings for later playback, depending on the version and preferences. If ordinary videos are subsequently cropped, return to the Crop controls and disable or clear the effect.
If an old crop or Croppadd setting continues to interfere, use Tools > Preferences > Reset Preferences. This resets VLC’s preferences and cache settings, so use it only if clearing the individual effect does not solve the problem.
Quick setup for a typical 1920×1080 half-SBS file
- Open the movie in VLC Desktop.
- Go to Tools > Preferences > Video and set Forced Aspect Ratio to 32:9.
- Open Tools > Effects and Filters > Video Effects > Crop.
- Enter 960 in Right to keep the left view, or in Left to keep the right view.
- Close the dialog and select Video > Full Screen.
- If the picture is too wide or otherwise distorted, clear the forced ratio and try Video > Aspect Ratio > 16:9.
Troubleshooting
The screen still shows two images
The crop is not removing a complete eye view. Increase the crop on the correct side until only one image remains. Check that you did not use a top-and-bottom file, and confirm that you used the custom pixel controls under Effects and Filters > Video Effects > Crop rather than only a preset crop ratio.

This is common with half-SBS video. Try displaying the remaining image at 16:9. For a 1920×1080 HSBS file, try the 32:9 forced-aspect-ratio workflow described above. If that makes the picture too wide, remove the forced ratio and return to the default or 16:9 setting.

The picture is too wide
You may be applying the half-SBS correction to a full-SBS file. Clear Forced Aspect Ratio and return to the default display ratio. You can also test Video > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 if the source is intended to be 16:9.
The wrong side was removed
Remember that the Left field removes pixels from the left edge, while the Right field removes pixels from the right edge. To keep the left eye, crop the right side; to keep the right eye, crop the left side.
If the preview does not respond as expected, close and reopen the file, check for a previously enabled Croppadd or Crop effect, and reset VLC preferences if a persistent setting cannot be removed.
Subtitles disappeared or were cut off
3D releases handle subtitles in different ways. Some place subtitles in the central gap; others render a separate subtitle copy for each eye. Cropping one view can therefore remove the subtitles or leave only one copy.
Try the other eye first. If that does not help, load an external subtitle file or adjust VLC’s subtitle position. A one-eye crop cannot preserve subtitle information that was placed outside the selected view.
The movie is top-and-bottom rather than SBS
Do not crop the left or right side. In a top-and-bottom file, the two views are stacked vertically, so you need to retain either the upper or lower half and crop approximately half the frame height. You will then need to check the display aspect ratio in the same way as with SBS video.
VLC on Android or iPhone does not show these controls
The desktop procedure is the most direct because VLC Desktop exposes the custom pixel-crop controls. Mobile VLC versions can have different menus and may expose screen-ratio controls without providing the same custom crop workflow. If your mobile build does not offer a suitable crop filter, use VLC Desktop or preprocess a copy of the file with a video tool that can crop one eye.

What not to use
- Anaglyph 3D: VLC’s Anaglyph 3D option combines the two views into a color-separated image intended for colored glasses. It is not the clean 2D result you want.
- Zoom alone: Zoom enlarges the two-eye composite; it does not select one eye.
- Arbitrary cropping on both sides: Remove one complete view from one edge. Cropping both sides by half the frame width can remove both views.
- A fixed 960-pixel assumption: Use 960 only for a 1920-pixel-wide frame. Derive the value from the actual width and inspect the visible boundary.
What quality should you expect?
Cropping does not restore the horizontal detail that a half-SBS source allocated to both eyes. In a 1920×1080 HSBS file, one eye may contain approximately 960×1080 pixels before display stretching. VLC can widen that image so it has the correct shape, but it cannot recreate detail that was not encoded.
A full-SBS file generally gives the selected eye more horizontal detail because each view occupies a larger portion of the source frame. The exact result still depends on the encode, black bars, pixel-aspect metadata, and the display.
Version and platform note
The menu paths above follow VLC Desktop documentation for the 3.0-era interface. Labels, effect persistence, and the placement of mobile controls can vary by operating system and VLC release. The underlying method remains the same: identify the layout, crop away one complete eye, correct the display ratio, and avoid Anaglyph 3D when the goal is ordinary 2D playback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cropping an SBS movie convert it to 2D?
No. Cropping an SBS movie selects one eye and displays it as a normal 2D image. It does not combine the views into stereoscopic 3D or restore detail lost in a half-SBS encode.
