If you want a faster thriller, choose The Night Agent Season 2; for speculative mystery, try Hulu’s Paradise; and for a movie night, choose Star Trek: Section 31, Back in Action, or the family-friendly Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. This U.S.-specific guide covers the month’s key premieres and their original release dates.
January 2025 is best approached as a focused streaming month rather than a packed one. The standout is Severance Season 2 on Apple TV+, followed by Netflix’s The Night Agent Season 2 and Hulu’s speculative mystery Paradise. For movie night, Star Trek: Section 31 and Back in Action offer very different kinds of action, while Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is the clearest family pick.
This is a U.S.-specific, date-stamped guide to January 2025 premieres. Release dates and catalogs can differ in other countries, and a title’s availability may have changed since its original launch.
The 8 best things to watch in January 2025
1. Severance Season 2 — Apple TV+ — January 17
Best for: viewers who want psychological science fiction, workplace mystery, and a show built for close discussion.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Severance is January’s strongest overall recommendation. The series returns to Mark Scout and his colleagues as they deal with the consequences of Lumon’s procedure, which separates a person’s work memories from their personal memories. Season 2 raises the pressure around that boundary and continues the investigation into what Lumon is really doing.
This is not an ideal background show or a casual one-evening watch. Start with Season 1, pay attention to the details, and expect the season to develop a continuing mystery rather than resolve everything in a self-contained story. Apple lists Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, and Ben Stiller among the principal cast.
Why watch it in January: It is the month’s major prestige return and the best choice for viewers who enjoy unpacking a story episode by episode.
2. The Night Agent Season 2 — Netflix — January 23
Best for: an accessible, fast-moving conspiracy thriller.
Where Severance asks viewers to sit with uncertainty, The Night Agent is the more straightforward binge. Its appeal is built around espionage, danger, cliffhangers, and a plot designed to keep the next episode within easy reach.
A Season 1 refresher is sensible if you no longer remember the original conspiracy and character relationships. Viewers who want a thriller that is easier to follow than a dense mystery-box drama should choose this as January’s main Netflix series.
3. Paradise — Hulu — January 26
Best for: political thrillers, speculative drama, and mystery-box storytelling.
Rank #2
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

Hulu’s Paradise follows Xavier as he searches for Teri and tries to understand how people survived “The Day.” Meanwhile, the community of Paradise faces new secrets involving its past and the origins of the city. The premise is most effective if you know the questions without having the major reversals spoiled.
Go in wanting to discover what happened, who knows the truth, and how this community was constructed. The series was created and executive-produced by Dan Fogelman and premiered in the United States on Hulu on January 26.
4. Star Trek: Section 31 — Paramount+ — January 24
Best for: Star Trek fans who prefer a darker, action-oriented story.
This is a feature-length streaming movie, not a new weekly series. It centers on Philippa Georgiou and the covert organization Section 31, taking the franchise away from its more familiar exploratory mode and toward espionage and action.
It works best as a one-night choice for established franchise viewers who are curious about a morally complicated corner of the Star Trek universe. It is not the first recommendation for someone looking for traditional optimistic, exploratory Trek.
5. Back in Action — Netflix — January 17
Best for: an uncomplicated action-comedy movie without a multi-episode commitment.
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx play former CIA agents whose carefully constructed suburban life is exposed. The setup provides the familiar combination of domestic complications, old skills, and returning danger.

Back in Action is January’s accessible crowd-pleaser: choose it when the group wants a movie rather than a serious serialized drama. The recommendation here is based on its format and broad premise, not a claim about critical reception.
6. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl — Netflix — January 3
Best for: families, animation fans, and viewers who want something lighter than January’s thrillers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis feature-length Wallace and Gromit adventure is the month’s clearest family-friendly streaming choice. Its stop-motion comedy and established characters make it a useful counterweight to the darker, more adult-oriented dramas arriving later in the month.
It is also a good option for a mixed-age household that wants a complete movie rather than a new series to follow.
7. On Call — Prime Video — January 9
Best for: compact police drama and procedural tension.
On Call gives viewers a shorter-form alternative to January’s sprawling conspiracy and science-fiction mysteries. Pick it if you want law-enforcement pressure, urgent cases, and a binge that does not require committing to a long-running franchise or elaborate mythology.

8. XO, Kitty Season 2 — Netflix — January 16
Best for: romantic comedy, young-adult drama, and a lighter coming-of-age story.
XO, Kitty Season 2 supplies the romantic and youthful counterpoint to January’s darker mysteries. Viewers who enjoyed the first season can return to its relationship complications and coming-of-age tone; newcomers should begin with Season 1 rather than treating the second season as a standalone introduction.
January 2025 by streaming platform
Netflix
Netflix has the broadest set of the month’s headline recommendations:
- January 3: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
- January 16: XO, Kitty Season 2
- January 17: Back in Action
- January 23: The Night Agent Season 2
Netflix also added a large catalog slate on January 1, including films such as Interstellar and Barbie. Those catalog additions are separate from the month’s original-premiere recommendations and may be especially useful if you want a familiar movie rather than a new series.
Best Netflix choice: The Night Agent Season 2 for a binge, Back in Action for movie night, or Wallace & Gromit for family viewing.
Apple TV+
Apple TV+’s January slate is concentrated around one major return: Severance Season 2, which premiered on January 17. Watch Season 1 first; the second season is a continuation of Mark’s story and the unresolved Lumon mystery, not a fresh entry point.
Best Apple TV+ choice: Severance Season 2.
Hulu
Paradise leads Hulu’s January recommendations. It is the right choice for viewers who want a speculative premise combined with political intrigue and a slowly unfolding explanation of “The Day.” Avoid spoilers before starting it.

Best Hulu choice: Paradise.
Paramount+
Star Trek: Section 31 is Paramount+’s most obvious January conversation starter. Treat it as a feature film for franchise fans, not as the beginning of a weekly television season.
Best Paramount+ choice: Star Trek: Section 31.
Prime Video
On Call, which premiered January 9, is the principal new scripted recommendation here. Prime Video also provides access to a broad catalog and separately operated channels, but channel programming should not be described as included with a regular Prime membership without checking the specific title and territory.
Best Prime Video choice: On Call for a police drama.
Peacock and other services
January’s wider streaming calendar also included Peacock programming such as SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, along with titles arriving on Max, Disney+, and other services. Because rights and launch dates vary by country, those services are best checked individually rather than treated as globally identical catalogs.

What to check before you watch
- Confirm the country. This calendar is based primarily on U.S. releases. A January 2025 U.S. premiere does not guarantee the same date or service elsewhere.
- Check the exact subscription tier or channel. Prime Video Channels, in particular, can involve a separate subscription. Do not assume that every title visible inside an app is included in the base plan.
- Watch required earlier seasons. Start Severance with Season 1, refresh The Night Agent Season 1 if its plot is hazy, and begin XO, Kitty with its first season.
- Separate premieres from catalog additions. Movies such as Interstellar and Barbie were catalog additions, not January 2025 originals, and catalog rights can change quickly.
- Recheck availability before republishing. This is a historical January 2025 guide, not a guarantee that these titles remain available in August 2026 or at any later date.
January 2025 did not need dozens of recommendations to make a useful watchlist. Start with Severance Season 2 for the month’s most substantial return, switch to The Night Agent for a faster binge, choose Paradise for a spoiler-sensitive mystery, and keep Wallace & Gromit or Back in Action ready for a simpler movie night.
