Crunchyroll announced the renewal on June 11, 2025, then set the premiere for April 1, 2026. The controversial part is not whether the anime returned, but why it did so after a first season criticized for weak animation and poor user ratings.
The evidence points to a more nuanced answer than “a ratings flop was inexplicably renewed”: international reception was poor in important parts of the audience, while the series still showed meaningful Japanese streaming traction and benefited from an established comic and novel franchise.
Yes—The Beginning After the End has a Season 2, and it is no longer merely upcoming. Crunchyroll announced the renewal on June 11, 2025, after Episode 11 of the first season. Season 2 premiered on April 1, 2026, and Crunchyroll is streaming it in the same broad group of territories that received Season 1, including North America, Europe and parts of Southeast Asia.
The more complicated part is the headline’s “ratings flop” description. The anime became one of Spring 2025’s most divisive fantasy releases because viewers criticized its animation and adaptation quality. However, the available evidence does not establish that it was a worldwide commercial failure. User ratings were weak in some markets, while the series still placed strongly on several Japanese streaming charts. The accurate story is a controversial adaptation that retained enough franchise, licensing and regional audience value to receive—and complete—the move into a second season.

When was The Beginning After the End Season 2 announced?
Crunchyroll announced Season 2 on June 11, 2025, shortly after the broadcast of Episode 11. The announcement confirmed a 2026 premiere and named the principal creative staff:
- Director: Keitaro Motonaga
- Animation studio: Studio A-CAT
- Series composer: Takamitsu Kono
- Character designer: Masami Sueoka
- Composer: Keiji Inai
Crunchyroll subsequently placed the series in its Spring 2026 lineup and gave the premiere date as April 1, 2026. The listing identified Studio A-CAT, a Wednesday simulcast slot and availability across multiple international territories. Crunchyroll’s April 3, 2026 coverage confirmed that the season had premiered in Japan on April 1 and was streaming through the service.
Why did the first season become so controversial?
The dispute was mainly about production quality, not the premise or the content of TurtleMe’s fantasy story. Viewers repeatedly criticized the animation for using still images, limited character movement and action scenes that could feel more like a slideshow than fully animated combat.
Some of the reaction was severe enough that reports described fans petitioning for cancellation after the second episode. That response was amplified by the property’s existing audience. This was not an unknown original anime arriving without expectations: the web novel and comic already had a substantial readership, and the official Tapas comic page records tens of millions of views and millions of likes.
For readers who already knew Arthur Leywin and the world of Dicathen, the anime’s visual shortcomings were therefore judged against a familiar and popular source. A weakly animated adaptation can attract criticism from ordinary viewers; it attracts substantially more scrutiny when fans have spent years imagining the same characters and major scenes.
TurtleMe addressed the reaction during the first season, acknowledging that there was room for improvement while continuing to support the adaptation. That supports calling the reception unusually divided, but it does not justify saying that the creator declared the anime an objective failure.
Was the anime really a ratings flop?
It depends on what “ratings flop” means. If the phrase refers to international audience reception and user scores, there is evidence for a disappointing first season. IMDb’s current series page lists the anime at 5.9/10, with individual first-season episodes generally ranging from the mid-5s to the low-7s. Those are weak scores for a prominent seasonal fantasy adaptation with an established fan base.

But IMDb is a user-rating platform. Its score is not an audited measurement of worldwide viewership, advertising revenue, licensing income, profitability or renewal probability. No reliable public evidence proves that the show was a universal commercial flop.
Japanese streaming performance complicates the negative narrative. In April 2025, Anime Corner reported that the series ranked:
- Sixth among TV anime series on Hulu Japan
- Third among anime titles on Netflix Japan
Those chart positions do not erase the international criticism, and they do not prove that the anime was profitable. They do show that “nobody watched it” is not a defensible summary. The show had measurable traction in Japan even while its user ratings and reputation were poor in other parts of its audience.
Why was Season 2 approved despite the backlash?
The renewal announcement itself provides an important clue: the decision came before the first season had fully concluded. That means the production, licensing and distribution plans were not determined solely by the final public user scores.
Several factors can plausibly coexist:
- The source property already had commercial value. The comic and novel had an established audience before the anime. That gives a distributor a built-in market even when the adaptation receives criticism.
- Regional performance was not uniform. Strong Japanese streaming-chart positions indicate that the series retained meaningful interest in at least one major market.
- Streaming decisions use more than review scores. Licensing commitments, territory performance, completion rates, subscriber engagement and the value of maintaining a broader franchise can all matter, even when those figures are not publicly disclosed.
- The story had more material to adapt. A fantasy property with an ongoing novel and comic can remain strategically valuable because a second season offers another opportunity to reach viewers who were curious about the premise but dissatisfied with the first production.
It would be inaccurate to say that Crunchyroll “saved” the anime or that its involvement guarantees a production overhaul. Crunchyroll is the confirmed streaming partner and the company that announced Season 2; the available information does not establish that it owns or independently produced the anime. Studio A-CAT is identified as the animation studio, and Fuji TV was involved in the Japanese broadcast structure.

What is the story about?
The Beginning After the End follows King Grey, a powerful ruler who dies under mysterious circumstances and is reincarnated as Arthur Leywin on the magical continent of Dicathen.
Arthur retains the knowledge and experience of his previous life while growing up again in a world of magic, monsters and political conflict. The premise combines reincarnation fantasy with a long-form coming-of-age story: Arthur must learn how to use his new abilities, understand the rules of Dicathen and confront dangers that extend well beyond his childhood.
The anime is adapted from TurtleMe’s web novel and comic property. Tapas credits the comic to Tapas Entertainment, TurtleMe and MGK-Story and describes it as an action-fantasy adaptation based on the hit novel published through Tapas.
Where can you watch Season 2?
Crunchyroll is the confirmed streaming service. Season 2 premiered on April 1, 2026, with a Wednesday simulcast listing. Availability varies by country, so viewers should check the Crunchyroll catalog for their own territory rather than assuming that every region receives the same schedule or language options.
Crunchyroll also carried Season 1 across a broad international territory list, including North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. The service’s Spring 2026 information confirms continued access for Season 2 in a similarly broad set of territories.
Can you read the original story?
Yes. The source material is available digitally through Tapas, and Crunchyroll’s Season 2 coverage notes that print editions are available through Yen Press. Readers who want to compare the adaptation with the comic—or continue into the larger story beyond the anime—can look for The Beginning After the End manga in the format and region available to them.
The comic is the most direct comparison point for the anime’s visual adaptation, while the original web novel provides the broader source version. Availability, volume numbering and print formats can differ by country, so check the publisher or retailer listing before buying a particular edition.

It is too early to make a definitive claim that Season 2 has solved the first season’s production problems based only on the renewal announcement and premiere information. The confirmed facts are that the same principal studio, Studio A-CAT, is listed for Season 2 and that the season has premiered. Neither fact proves that the animation has substantially improved—or that it has not.

The bottom line on the renewal
The Beginning After the End was renewed because its first-season reception was not the same thing as a global commercial verdict. International viewers had legitimate and highly visible complaints about limited animation and a slideshow-like presentation, and IMDb’s 5.9/10 user score reflects a poor part of that reception. At the same time, Japanese streaming rankings showed meaningful local demand, while the underlying comic and novel already had a large audience.
So the best answer to the headline is not “a ratings disaster was inexplicably rescued.” It is this: a heavily criticized adaptation still had enough franchise strength, regional streaming value and future licensing potential to justify a second season. That second season premiered on April 1, 2026, and Crunchyroll remains the confirmed international streaming home.

The Beginning After the End Season 2 is real and premiered on April 1, 2026. The first season was widely criticized for weak animation and earned poor user ratings in some markets, but Japanese streaming-chart results and the strength of the original comic and novel make “global ratings flop” too broad. The evidence supports a more precise conclusion: the adaptation was controversial, not demonstrably commercially doomed.
