1. Rent or buy it on Amazon Video
Amazon’s listing for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation showed the movie in UHD with a $4.99 rental option and a $14.99 purchase option when it was crawled. A rental is the better choice if you only want to watch the movie once or during the holiday season; buying it makes more sense if you expect to revisit it.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
To find it, search Amazon for the full title, select the 1989 movie starring Chevy Chase, and compare the rental and purchase buttons before checkout. The listing may also show an “Essential Holiday 4-Film Collection.” That bundle is optional—you do not need it to watch Christmas Vacation by itself.
Rent Christmas Vacation on Amazon if you want immediate digital access. Do not interpret an Amazon Video rental or purchase as proof that the movie is included with a general Prime subscription; transactional video-on-demand and subscription streaming are different options.
2. Check the Apple TV Store
The Apple TV Store is another listed U.S. destination for renting or buying the film. Apple’s title page identifies the correct movie as the 1989 Warner Bros. release, with a runtime of 1 hour 37 minutes, English audio, closed captions, and a PG-13 rating.
Search for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in the Apple TV app or on Apple’s U.S. movie page. Confirm that the page identifies the 1989 film before selecting Rent or Buy, and verify the displayed price because storefront pricing can vary by date, device, account, and promotion.

3. Check Fandango At Home

Rent or buy Christmas Vacation on Fandango At Home if that storefront is convenient for you. As with Amazon and Apple, this is a digital transaction—not evidence that the movie is part of a general subscription plan.

Older holiday articles should not be used as current confirmation. The movie has previously appeared through seasonal arrangements involving services and networks such as AMC, AMC+, cable authentication, DIRECTV, and Fubo. Those reports document past availability, not what is included now. A separate 2026 article mentioned Max or Disney+, but the more recent title-specific availability check did not list a subscription option. Licensing can change again, so check a service’s own app immediately before subscribing or renting elsewhere.
In particular, do not assume that Christmas Vacation is currently:
- free to watch;
- included with Amazon Prime;
- available on Max; or
- available on Disney+.
4. Buy the DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD edition
Physical media is the safest choice if you watch the film every year, have unreliable internet, or do not want to track changing streaming licenses. Retail listings support DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD editions, although the exact edition, price, stock status, and included extras vary by seller.
For a permanent copy, compare a National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD edition. Check the product details carefully: a 4K UHD disc generally requires a 4K UHD player, while a standard Blu-ray requires a Blu-ray player. Availability and delivery terms should be confirmed on the product page rather than assumed from a search result.

- Best picture potential: Look for the 4K UHD edition, but confirm that your television, player, and audio setup support it.

Make sure you have the right movie
The title is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, not a generic collection of holiday films. It is the 1989 Warner Bros. comedy directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, and Randy Quaid. It runs approximately 97 minutes and is rated PG-13 in the United States.
Those details are useful when several holiday titles or bundles appear in a search. Select the 1989 feature—not a trailer, clip, sequel, compilation, or unrelated movie with “Christmas Vacation” in its description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to verify availability before you pay
- Confirm that the title is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and that the release year is 1989.
- Check whether the button says Rent or Buy. Neither option automatically means the movie is included in a subscription.
- Review the resolution, audio, captions, and device compatibility if those features matter to you.
- Compare the final price at checkout, since the amount shown in a search result may be outdated.
- If you want a physical copy, confirm the format—DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD—and verify that your player supports it.
The answer above applies to the United States. Availability in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries can differ substantially because movie rights are licensed by territory.
