September 2024 was a transition month rather than a major anime season launch. The best new Netflix and Crunchyroll viewing included three Netflix film arrivals, a recent Netflix action continuation, and three Crunchyroll series continuing weekly from the Summer season.
For U.S. viewers, the strongest new anime available on Netflix and Crunchyroll in September 2024 were not all September premieres. Netflix supplied three notable film arrivals and a recent action continuation, while Crunchyroll’s best options were weekly episodes of shows that began during the Summer 2024 season.

The seven best picks are Blue Giant, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, Grave of the Fireflies, Kengan Ashura Part II, Tower of God Season 2, My Hero Academia Season 7, and The Elusive Samurai. This distinction matters: September was a bridge month between the summer and fall anime seasons, with fewer brand-new series and more films, continuations, and weekly releases. Contemporary September coverage also treated the month as a transition period rather than a major season-launch window.

Blue Giant is an unusual anime recommendation because its central conflict is artistic rather than supernatural or military. It follows Dai Miyamoto, a teenager who discovers jazz, teaches himself tenor saxophone, and decides to pursue a career despite having no formal musical training. Practice, performance, friendship, and the uncertainty of creative ambition drive the story.
Netflix added the film in the United States and Canada on September 1, 2024. The arrival gave viewers a self-contained alternative to starting another multi-season series. Its premise also makes it a natural choice for people who do not usually seek out anime: the emotional stakes come from dedication and performance, while the music itself is central to the drama. The September availability was reported by contemporary Netflix release coverage.
Choose it if: you want an ambitious music film, a story about perseverance, or an anime that does not require a large franchise commitment. A North American Blue Giant Blu-ray from GKIDS was also reported at the time, although the exact edition and current retailer availability should be checked before purchase.
2. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM — Netflix
Best for mecha fans, especially viewers already familiar with Gundam SEED.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM arrived on Netflix on September 1, 2024. The film takes place one year after the Second Alliance-PLANT War. In the aftermath, Lacus Clyne establishes Compass, an organization intended to intervene in conflicts, and Kira Yamato joins it. A new crisis involving the Emerging Countries Foundation and Blue Cosmos soon puts the organization and its pilots under pressure.
This is a major franchise film rather than an uncomplicated beginner entry. Viewers who know the characters, political factions, and conflicts from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny will have more context for the film’s relationships and stakes. Newcomers can still approach it as a large-scale mecha story, but the movie is more rewarding when its history is not completely unfamiliar. Netflix’s September release reporting identified the film’s September 1 streaming date and described it as the highest-grossing film in the Gundam franchise at that point.
Choose it if: you want mobile suits, political conflict, established anime characters, and a feature-length continuation of a long-running science-fiction universe. If you are completely new to Gundam, consider starting with the relevant SEED entries before treating this as your first stop.
3. Grave of the Fireflies — Netflix
September’s most important Netflix arrival, but emphatically not light entertainment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIsao Takahata’s Studio Ghibli film follows orphaned siblings in Kobe near the end of World War II. It depicts the effects of wartime devastation, displacement, deprivation, and the collapse of ordinary social support. The film’s power comes from its intimate focus on two children trying to survive conditions created by war.
Netflix announced a streaming start of September 16, 2024, in more than 190 countries, with Japan excluded from that announcement. The date and territory qualification come from Netflix’s official announcement.
Content warning: Grave of the Fireflies includes war trauma, child endangerment, starvation, grief, and death. It is best approached as a major work of historical animation and an anti-war film, not as casual comfort viewing or a family movie simply because it is animated.
Rank #2
Choose it if: you want a serious, emotionally demanding film about civilians caught in wartime catastrophe. Viewers looking for something cheerful should choose Blue Giant instead.

4. Kengan Ashura Part II — Netflix
Best September Netflix option for brutal tournament action.
Kengan Ashura takes place in a hidden world where corporate disputes are settled through gladiatorial fights. Its protagonist, Ohma Tokita, enters that violent system as companies use combatants to resolve business conflicts. The series combines tournament structure with an underworld premise: the matches are not merely sporting events, but tools used by powerful corporate interests.
Kengan Ashura Part II should be described as a recent Netflix continuation that was available during the September 2024 viewing window, not as a September 1 premiere. Netflix’s title page lists the series with three seasons and includes a dedicated Season 2 Part 2 trailer. Check Netflix’s title page for the platform’s current organization of the episodes, since catalog labels and availability can change.
Choose it if: you enjoy tournament anime, exaggerated martial-arts techniques, rival fighters, and a high level of physical violence. It is a poor fit for viewers seeking family-friendly action, quiet character drama, or a low-intensity introduction to anime.

5. Tower of God Season 2 — Crunchyroll
Best for fantasy viewers who prefer mysteries that unfold over time.
Tower of God Season 2 was one of Crunchyroll’s prominent continuing Summer 2024 releases. September viewers were following new weekly episodes rather than watching a new September premiere; contemporary scheduling listed episode 10 for September 8, 2024. Crunchyroll’s seasonal information also identified the series as a continuing simulcast, with availability varying by territory and licensing arrangements. Crunchyroll’s seasonal announcements are the best place to distinguish its current seasonal programming from older catalog titles.
The series is a serialized fantasy mystery built around a vast tower, its tests, its competing factions, and the people attempting to climb it. Because the story depends on accumulated world-building and character relationships, prior familiarity with Season 1 is strongly recommended. Season 2 is not the ideal starting point for someone who wants a self-contained September watch.
Choose it if: you like elaborate fantasy settings, shifting alliances, unanswered questions, and stories that expect you to keep track of a large cast. Start with Season 1 if you have not seen the series before.
6. My Hero Academia Season 7 — Crunchyroll
Best mainstream weekly action pick.
My Hero Academia Season 7 continued on Crunchyroll throughout September 2024. The contemporary schedule identified episodes 16 through 19 as the month’s releases, with episode 16 scheduled for September 7. That makes the season a September viewing recommendation because of its ongoing weekly story progression, not because Season 7 launched that month. The episode schedule and Crunchyroll availability were reported in September’s contemporary anime release coverage.
The show remains a broad superhero-action recommendation: aspiring heroes train, develop their abilities, and confront increasingly serious threats in a society organized around superpowers. New viewers should not begin with Season 7, since the emotional and plot impact depends on the earlier seasons.
Choose it if: you want a familiar shonen structure, superhero powers, large ensemble battles, and a series that was delivering new episodes during the month. If you are catching up rather than watching weekly, wait until you have completed the preceding seasons.

It follows a young protagonist whose survival is tied to the political upheaval surrounding him. The show’s appeal comes from the contrast between a personal struggle to stay alive and the larger historical conflict reshaping the country.
The series combines historical action, political intrigue, and highly stylized animation. Crunchyroll’s September 5 announcement included the title in its active anime promotional lineup, while seasonal release listings identified it as part of the 2024 Crunchyroll slate. Availability and episode timing were subject to regional licensing.
Choose it if: you want something different from contemporary superhero or tournament anime. It is a good match for viewers interested in historical settings, political conflict, survival stories, and a visually distinctive action style.
September arrivals versus weekly viewing
The most useful way to understand this list is to separate the titles by how they reached viewers:
- Actual Netflix September arrivals: Blue Giant and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM arrived on September 1, while Grave of the Fireflies arrived on September 16.
- Netflix continuation: Kengan Ashura Part II was a recent continuation available in the September window, not a new September premiere.
- Crunchyroll weekly series: Tower of God Season 2, My Hero Academia Season 7, and The Elusive Samurai were ongoing seasonal shows that gave subscribers new episodes during September.
Streaming rights are temporary and territory-specific. The dates above describe the September 2024 release situation, primarily for U.S. readers; Netflix explicitly included the United States in its September availability while Blue Giant’s reported release covered the United States and Canada. Crunchyroll’s simulcast rights covered North America and other territories, but schedules and access could differ by country. Check the service’s current title page before planning a viewing session.
What was coming next?
Crunchyroll published its Fall 2024 lineup announcement on September 18, but the announcement primarily previewed titles beginning in October. It highlighted upcoming releases including Dragon Ball DAIMA, DAN DA DAN, Re:ZERO Season 3, and BLUE LOCK 2nd Season. Those shows are useful follow-up recommendations, but they should not be mislabeled as September 2024 releases. See Crunchyroll’s official Fall 2024 announcement for the announced slate.
One other notable September premiere is deliberately absent from this seven-title list: Uzumaki premiered through Adult Swim and Toonami on September 28, 2024, with next-day availability on Max in the United States. It was not a Netflix or Crunchyroll release, so including it here would blur the platform scope of the guide.
The Bottom Line
The best single September 2024 pick is Blue Giant for a self-contained film, while Grave of the Fireflies is the essential serious viewing choice. Mecha fans should choose Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, action fans Kengan Ashura Part II, and Crunchyroll subscribers should follow Tower of God Season 2, My Hero Academia Season 7, or The Elusive Samurai according to their preferred genre.
