Start with the 1968 original and continue in release order. In the U.S., the films are split across Hulu, Max, Prime Video, free-with-ads services, rental stores, and physical media rather than sitting in one complete subscription catalog. Availability checked August 12, 2026.
The complete U.S. answer
There are 10 released theatrical Planet of the Apes movies. For a first watch, use release order: begin with Planet of the Apes (1968), continue through the five-film original series, watch Tim Burton’s separate 2001 remake, and then watch the four-film modern continuity from Rise through Kingdom.
In the United States, no single subscription service currently carries all 10 films. The movies are split among Hulu, Max, Prime Video, free-with-ads services, digital rental stores, and DVD or Blu-ray. If you want to compare the current streaming options, check the individual listing before subscribing or renting because catalogs and prices can change.
Availability note: U.S. listings and availability were checked August 12, 2026. Services, prices, ad-supported access, and regional availability can change without notice.

Best order to watch the movies
For a first-time viewer, watch all 10 in release order:
- Planet of the Apes (1968)
- Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
- Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
- Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
- Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
- Planet of the Apes (2001)
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
- War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Release order is the simplest choice because it preserves the original films’ reveals and lets you experience the franchise’s shifts in tone, filmmaking style, and continuity in the order audiences originally saw them.
How the three continuities fit together
The original five-film series: 1968–1973
The first five movies form one continuity:
- Planet of the Apes (1968)
- Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
- Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
- Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
- Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
Watch them consecutively if you want the complete classic storyline. The older films are also the least consistently available through major subscription services, so digital rentals or physical media may be more practical than trying to find all five in one catalog.
The 2001 film is a separate remake
Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001) is a standalone remake, not a sequel to the 1968–1973 series and not part of the modern Caesar-era continuity. It can be watched after the original films in release order, or independently if you want to see a separate interpretation of the premise.

The modern Caesar continuity: 2011–2024
The modern storyline is:
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
- War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Kingdom is the latest released film and takes place many generations after the events of War. It continues the modern timeline rather than remaking the 1968 film. For viewers mainly interested in this story, watching Rise, Dawn, War, and Kingdom in that order is a complete, manageable viewing path.
Where to watch the original five films
The classic series is the difficult part of a full marathon. At the time of the U.S. check, the first, second, third, and fifth films had rental or purchase listings but no listed free streaming option. Conquest was the exception, with subscription access through IndieFlix and the IndieFlix Shorts Amazon Channel, plus free-with-ads listings on Plex Player and Fawesome.
| Film | Most practical options from the checked listings |
|---|---|
| Planet of the Apes (1968) | Digital rental or purchase, or DVD/Blu-ray. |
| Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) | Digital rental or purchase, Spectrum On Demand, or DVD/Blu-ray. |
| Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) | Digital rental or purchase, Spectrum On Demand, or DVD/Blu-ray. |
| Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) | IndieFlix, free with ads on Plex Player or Fawesome, digital rental or purchase, or physical media. |
| Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) | Digital rental or purchase, Spectrum On Demand, or DVD/Blu-ray. |
If you only need one missing movie, a transaction is usually more efficient than adding a new monthly subscription. For example, you can rent Beneath the Planet of the Apes through one of the digital stores listed above, subject to the title’s current listing and price.

Is there a complete Planet of the Apes collection?
A documented 9-film Blu-ray collection covers the five original movies, the 2001 remake, and the 2011–2017 modern trilogy. It is a useful option for viewers who want a stable library instead of chasing rotating streaming catalogs: buy the original Planet of the Apes Blu-ray collection.
It is not a complete 10-film set: the documented collection does not include Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024). If you choose that route, plan to obtain Kingdom separately on disc or through a digital rental or purchase listing.
Physical media also avoids a common streaming problem: a movie can disappear from a subscription catalog even when it remains available to rent or buy. The trade-off is the upfront cost and the need to confirm that the edition you are buying contains the desired film, rather than assuming every “collection” includes all 10 releases.
Fastest viewing plans
If you want all 10 films
- Use the release-order list above.
- Check Hulu first for the 2001 film and the first two modern films.
- Check Max or its listed channel options for War.
- Check Prime Video for Kingdom.
- Use digital rentals or purchases for the classic films that are not included in a service you already have.
- Consider the 9-film Blu-ray collection if you prefer a permanent library, remembering that it excludes Kingdom.
If you only want the modern story
Watch Rise → Dawn → War → Kingdom. This avoids the separate 2001 remake and the original continuity while preserving the modern films’ chronology.
If you want the classic storyline
Watch the five original films in release order: Planet → Beneath → Escape → Conquest → Battle. Do not insert the 2001 film between them; it is a separate remake.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
Start with the 1968 movie and watch the 10 films in release order if you want the full franchise experience. The five films from 1968 through 1973 are one continuity, the 2001 movie stands alone, and Rise through Kingdom form a separate modern continuity. In the U.S., expect a mixed viewing strategy rather than one all-in-one subscription: Hulu covers several entries, Max covers War, Prime Video carries Kingdom, and much of the original series is easiest to find through digital rental, purchase, or physical media.
