The five best HBO Max series for August 25–31, 2025, were Peacemaker Season 2, Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills, Abbott Elementary Season 4, The Cleaning Lady Season 4, and Horses & Hangmen. This U.S.-focused historical list ranks them by their specific reason to watch that week: a new episode, a recent season addition, or a new Max Original premiere.
For the U.S. HBO Max schedule of August 25–31, 2025, the best weekly picks were led by Peacemaker Season 2 and a new episode of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills. The remaining recommendations cover a full-season comedy binge, a serialized crime drama, and a new true-crime Max Original. This is a historical, editorial list—not a claim that these were HBO Max’s official most-watched programs.
The selections are ranked by how strong each series’ concrete reason to watch was during that particular week: a new episode, a recent season addition, or a new Max Original premiere.
1. Peacemaker Season 2
Watch it if: You want an adult superhero series that combines violent action, broad comedy, DC continuity, and a more troubled central character than the usual costumed hero.

Peacemaker was the week’s biggest scripted release. Warner Bros. Discovery listed Season 2 as a Max Original debuting on August 21, 2025, with eight episodes released weekly at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. Episode 2, titled “A Man Is Only as Good as His Bird,” arrived Thursday, August 28—directly inside the target week.
John Cena returns as Christopher Smith, the aggressively patriotic and deeply damaged vigilante introduced in The Suicide Squad and developed further in the first season of Peacemaker. The second season continues the show’s collision of crude humor, graphic action, personal trauma, and alternate-world complications.
This is the strongest choice for viewers who already know the character from The Suicide Squad or Season 1. It is a weaker blind recommendation for anyone looking for a family-friendly superhero show: the series is explicitly adult in tone, and its continuing story rewards prior viewing.
Viewers who want to explore the character beyond television can also look for Peacemaker: Kill for Peace, a DC paperback collection of the character’s early comic appearances. It works best as a companion to the series rather than as required preparation; the show’s television continuity should be treated as its own experience.

2. Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills
Watch it if: You follow the NFL or enjoy documentary storytelling about pressure, preparation, roster decisions, and the personalities inside a professional sports team.
The five-part HBO and NFL Films documentary series supplied the week’s strongest sports option, with a new episode on Tuesday, August 26, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. The Buffalo Bills’ official viewing guide listed the series premiere on August 5 and one episode each Tuesday, making August 26 the scheduled release date for Episode 4.

The series follows the Buffalo Bills during preparation for the 2025 NFL season, including quarterback Josh Allen, head coach Sean McDermott, and the competition and uncertainty surrounding training camp. Its appeal comes from access to the process rather than from a scripted plot: players and coaches have to make decisions under the pressure of expectations, injuries, competition, and the approaching regular season.
This was also the first time the long-running Hard Knocks format featured the Bills, giving the season additional interest for Buffalo fans and NFL viewers curious about a team carrying championship expectations. It is not a general-interest drama recommendation, however. If football is not part of your viewing diet, the strategic and roster-focused material may be less compelling than the other entries here.

Watch it if: You want a warm, accessible workplace comedy and would rather start a completed season than wait for one new episode at a time.
Season 4 of Abbott Elementary was added to HBO Max on August 23, the weekend immediately before this viewing window. That made the full season available to catch up on throughout August 25–31.
Set at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia, the ensemble comedy balances the teachers’ daily frustrations with affection for the students, the school, and one another. Its workplace setting gives the show plenty of room for professional disagreements and institutional problems, while the mockumentary format keeps the tone light and character-driven.
Among these five picks, Abbott Elementary is the easiest recommendation for viewers who want something lighter. It also provides the clearest full-season binge opportunity, in contrast with the weekly release schedules of Peacemaker and Hard Knocks.

The inclusion is editorial: the schedule confirms its August 23 HBO Max addition, but the available evidence does not establish that it was a platform ranking or one of the service’s most-watched titles that week.
4. The Cleaning Lady Season 4
Watch it if: You prefer a conventional crime thriller with family stakes, suspense, and a serialized criminal-world story that can be watched in larger chunks.
Season 4 of The Cleaning Lady was another substantial addition available during the target week, arriving on HBO Max on August 23. It gave subscribers a recent full-season crime drama to begin or continue while the week’s Max Original and sports documentary were still releasing episodes.
The series combines procedural elements with an ongoing story about criminal networks and family pressures. That makes it a natural choice for viewers who want more narrative momentum and conventional thriller mechanics than either the workplace comedy of Abbott Elementary or the observational access of Hard Knocks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe wording matters here: this was a recent HBO Max catalog addition, not a series that the available research identifies as a new Max Original. Its recommendation rests on the season’s availability and binge-friendly format, not on a verified platform ranking.
5. Horses & Hangmen
Watch it if: You want a new true-crime investigation and are looking for a fresh documentary premiere rather than another older-season addition.

Horses & Hangmen was listed by Warner Bros. Discovery as a Max Original debuting Friday, August 29. It follows the investigation into the disappearance of Frank Dan Nørgaard Jørgensen after his burned car was discovered in a forest, and the subsequent murder investigation.
That premiere date gives the series a clear place in this week’s list: it was genuinely new during the Friday-to-weekend portion of the window. For documentary and true-crime viewers, it also adds a different kind of viewing experience to a lineup otherwise dominated by scripted comedy, superhero action, football, and a returning crime drama.
The available scheduling information confirms the premiere, Max Original status, and basic case premise. It does not establish a critic score, audience ranking, or claim that the series was the most popular new show of the week. The reason to try it is its new investigation and subject matter—not an unsupported popularity claim.
How the five fit different viewing plans
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The week’s biggest scripted release | Peacemaker Season 2 | A new season was already underway, with Episode 2 arriving August 28. |
| A sports documentary | Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills | Episode 4 was scheduled for August 26, with access to an NFL training camp. |
| A lighter full-season binge | Abbott Elementary Season 4 | The season had been added in full on August 23. |
| A serialized crime drama | The Cleaning Lady Season 4 | A recent full-season addition with thriller and family-stakes elements. |
| A new true-crime premiere | Horses & Hangmen | The Max Original debuted Friday, August 29. |
Other HBO Max arrivals that week
Two plausible alternatives were left outside the top five. Bitchin’ Rides: Road to Ridler Season 1 arrived August 28, while Iyanu Season 1B arrived August 31, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s schedule.
Neither was ranked above the selected titles because this list prioritizes broader genre coverage, flagship scripted programming, a major HBO sports documentary, and a new Max Original. That does not make either alternative a poor choice; they simply offered a less compelling fit for the editorial criteria used here.
Important availability note
This list describes the U.S. HBO Max/Max schedule for August 25–31, 2025. It is not a guide to what is currently available in August 2026. Streaming catalogs, release times, subscription tiers, and territorial rights can differ by country and may change after publication. The sports timing cited here is likewise based on the U.S. Buffalo Bills viewing guide.
