Netflix Spinning Wheel: How to Fix Stuck Loading and Buffering

Netflix stuck on a spinning wheel? Use this diagnostic order to check outages, Wi-Fi speed, device software, VPN settings, app data, and device-specific fixes without losing downloads unnecessarily.

If Netflix is stuck on a spinning wheel, the likely cause is a network problem or stale Netflix/device data—not a problem with the film or documentary itself. Check Netflix’s service status, test another app and Fast.com, then restart Netflix, the device, and the home network in that order. The guide below shows how to identify the fault without jumping straight to a factory reset or deleting downloads.

If Netflix is stuck on a spinning wheel, first check whether Netflix is down, then test another app on the same device. In most cases, the cause is either a network connection that is too slow or unstable, or stale data in the Netflix app or device. Restarting Netflix, fully restarting the device, and rebooting the modem and router usually provide the safest first fixes.

A spinning wheel can mean two slightly different things:

  • Netflix never finishes loading: the app or device may have stale data, a connectivity problem, outdated software, or an account-session issue.
  • Netflix starts but repeatedly buffers: the internet connection may be too slow, unstable, congested, or affected by Wi-Fi interference.

Fix the Netflix spinning wheel in this order

1. Check Netflix’s service status

Before changing settings, check Netflix’s official service-status page. If Netflix is having a widespread outage, changing your TV, router, or account will not fix the problem. Service status can change quickly, so check it when the problem is happening rather than relying on an old outage report.

  • The ultimate perfectionist: Highwings every parts of the cable has been put through rigorous the performance tests in the laboratory. After we've combined every flawless part into a perfect 8K cable and it can be presented to you.

2. Test another app on the same device

Open another internet-connected app on the television, streaming stick, game console, phone, or computer.

  • Other apps also fail: investigate the device, Wi-Fi, router, modem, or internet service.
  • Other apps work but Netflix does not: Netflix’s app data, account session, software version, browser, or device compatibility is more likely to be involved.
  • Netflix works on other devices: focus on the affected device rather than replacing the entire home network.
  • Netflix fails on several devices: focus on the network, Netflix service status, VPN or proxy settings, and your internet provider.

3. Run Netflix’s built-in network test

On many TVs and TV-connected devices, open Netflix and go to Get Help > Check your Network. The exact wording can vary by device and app version.

A failed test or connection error generally means that the device is not reaching the internet. A slow result points toward the internet connection, Wi-Fi conditions, or the internet service provider. Also test at Fast.com, which measures the connection directly to Netflix. This is more useful than testing only a general speed-test server.

4. Close and reopen Netflix

Exit Netflix completely and launch it again. On some TVs, pressing the Home button does not actually close the app; it may leave Netflix suspended in the background.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

On Apple TV, force-close Netflix before reopening it. On a phone or tablet, force-stop the app if the operating system provides that option. If Netflix is still spinning, move to a full device restart.

5. Fully restart the affected device

Use a real power cycle rather than leaving the device in sleep or standby mode:

  1. Turn off the TV, streaming player, console, phone, tablet, or computer.
  2. Unplug it if it does not have a complete shutdown option.
  3. Wait roughly 15 seconds to three minutes, depending on the device.
  4. Reconnect it, turn it on, and try Netflix again.

Restarting clears temporary software state without deleting your Netflix downloads or account. Device-specific restart instructions can differ, so use the manufacturer’s procedure when available.

6. Restart the modem and router

If the device restart does not help, restart the home network:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the device on which Netflix is failing.
  2. Unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the modem first.
  4. Wait about one minute for the modem to reconnect to the provider.
  5. Reconnect or turn on the router if it is separate.
  6. Wait for the Wi-Fi network to return, then turn on the device and test Netflix.

Some modem and router combinations take longer than a minute to reconnect. Do not assume the restart failed until the network is visible and another app can reach the internet.

Check whether your internet connection is adequate

Netflix’s recommended sustained speeds are:

Video quality Recommended connection speed
HD, 720p At least 3 Mbps
Full HD, 1080p At least 5 Mbps
Ultra HD, 4K At least 15 Mbps

These figures are recommendations for streaming quality, not a guarantee that playback will never buffer. A connection can measure fast enough and still fail intermittently because of Wi-Fi interference, signal coverage, congestion, packet loss, or several people using the connection at once.

Try a better connection before buying anything

  • Run Fast.com near the affected device and again near the router.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth activity.
  • Move the device or router to reduce walls and other sources of interference.
  • Use the faster or less congested Wi-Fi band offered by your router when the device supports it.
  • Connect the TV or streaming device by Ethernet if it has an Ethernet port and the cable can be routed safely.

A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can be a sensible diagnostic and stability option for a compatible TV, streaming player, console, or computer. It does not repair Netflix itself and will not help if the service from the internet provider is already unreliable. Test the wired connection before treating it as a permanent purchase.

When a mesh Wi-Fi system might make sense

Do not buy a mesh system merely because Netflix shows a spinning wheel. Consider one only if testing shows that several devices have weak or inconsistent Wi-Fi in particular rooms, or if coverage—not the incoming internet service—is the broader problem. A mesh Wi-Fi system may improve coverage, but it cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet provider or resolve a Netflix outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Netflix and the device software

An outdated app, operating system, browser, device firmware, or unsupported device can prevent Netflix from loading or playing video correctly.

  • Update the Netflix app through the device’s app store.
  • Install available TV, streaming-stick, console, or media-player firmware updates.
  • Install operating-system updates on phones, tablets, and computers.
  • On a computer, use a current supported version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, or Safari.

Netflix’s current computer requirements include Windows 10 or 11 for Windows computers and macOS 10.15.5 or later for Macs. Supported browser versions and resolution limits vary, so an older computer may need an operating-system or browser upgrade. If Netflix shows “Update Required,” the browser, operating system, or device may need updating—or the device may no longer be supported.

Disable VPN, proxy, and custom DNS settings temporarily

VPNs, proxies, and custom DNS configurations can interfere with Netflix connectivity or location detection. Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy and test Netflix again. If you changed DNS or other network settings, restore the normal automatic settings before testing.

Fast.com can help identify a possible location mismatch. Netflix’s instructions include checking the country shown in the test’s Client information and comparing it with your actual location. If the countries do not match, a VPN or proxy may still be active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix also says that its ad-supported plans do not support VPN use. Do not treat a VPN as a solution to a spinning wheel; it can be the reason for the problem.

Refresh your Netflix sign-in and app data

Sign out and sign back in

Signing out and back in can refresh a damaged or expired account session. Use Netflix’s sign-out option from the help menu or account menu available on your device, then sign in again. Have your Netflix login details available first.

Clear Netflix storage on Android

On Android phones and tablets, clearing Netflix app storage can resolve connection and loading problems when simpler steps fail. The path varies by Android version, but is commonly similar to Settings > Apps > Netflix > Storage > Clear storage.

This is not a harmless cache refresh: clearing storage signs you out and removes Netflix downloads stored on the device. Reopen Netflix and sign in again afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall or reset Netflix only as a later step

Reinstalling, resetting, uninstalling, or clearing the app’s data can remove downloaded titles from the device or SD card. It may also erase app settings. Use this step only after restarting, testing the connection, updating the software, and disabling VPN or proxy settings—and only when you know the credentials needed to sign in again.

Chromecast

Restart Chromecast and check the network connection. Netflix’s device guidance may require resetting Chromecast settings when other fixes fail. A reset erases saved settings and means the Chromecast must be configured again.

Roku

Restart the Roku, update its system software, and remove and re-add Netflix if the app remains stuck. Re-adding the channel can require signing in again.

Android phone or tablet

Force-stop Netflix, restart Android, update the app and operating system, and test both Wi-Fi and mobile data where practical. Clear Netflix storage only as a later step because it signs you out and removes downloads.

iPhone or iPad

Update Netflix and iOS or iPadOS, restart the device, and test again. Reset network settings only after simpler fixes fail. A network-settings reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, so make sure you know the Wi-Fi password before using it.

Windows or Mac computer

Try a current supported browser, disable VPN or proxy software, and update the browser and operating system. If Netflix fails only on one Windows computer and the problem occurs alongside wider driver, graphics, audio, or system-performance symptoms, a Windows driver update tool may be an optional diagnostic path after official Windows, browser, and manufacturer updates. It is not a standard Netflix fix, and Netflix does not endorse it as a required remedy.

When to contact your ISP or device manufacturer

Contact your internet service provider when:

  • Fast.com remains below the speed you pay for.
  • Netflix fails on multiple devices on the same network.
  • Other internet services are also slow or unavailable.
  • The connection repeatedly drops or changes speed.

Give the ISP useful diagnostic details: the Fast.com result, whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whether one device or several are affected, and whether other apps work.

Contact the device manufacturer when Netflix works on other devices but remains broken after restarting, updating, and checking the network. The manufacturer is better placed to help with firmware, compatibility, factory-reset decisions, or hardware-specific connectivity problems.

What not to do first

  • Do not factory-reset the TV immediately: it can erase settings and require every app to be configured again.
  • Do not clear app data without warning: Android storage clearing and reinstalling can remove downloads and sign you out.
  • Do not assume a speed result proves the network is healthy: instability and congestion can still cause buffering.
  • Do not buy a Wi-Fi extender, router, or cable as a guaranteed cure: first determine whether the problem is coverage, the ISP, the device, or Netflix itself.
  • Do not install a driver utility as the first Netflix fix: Windows users should update the browser, operating system, and device drivers through official sources first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Restart Netflix and fully restart the device, update Netflix and the device software, disable any VPN or proxy, then sign out and back in. If that fails, reinstall Netflix only after confirming that you know your sign-in details and understand that downloads may be removed.

Netflix is stuck loading but other apps work. What should I do?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix can buffer despite a fast speed result when the connection is unstable, congested, affected by Wi-Fi interference, or serving several devices at once. Test Fast.com near the affected device, pause other heavy traffic, and compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection.

Why does Netflix keep buffering even though my internet speed is high?

Yes. Clearing Netflix storage on Android, resetting the app, or reinstalling it can sign you out and delete downloaded titles stored on the device or SD card.

Will clearing Netflix data delete my downloads?

Not before testing. A new router or mesh Wi-Fi system is reasonable only when testing shows broader coverage or Wi-Fi stability problems. It will not fix a Netflix outage, an unsupported device, or an internet-provider problem.

Should I buy a new router to stop the Netflix spinning wheel?

The Bottom Line

For a Netflix spinning wheel, start with service status and a second app, then restart Netflix, power-cycle the device, and reboot the modem and router. Use Fast.com and Netflix’s network check to separate a device problem from a network problem. Update software and disable VPN or proxy settings before clearing app data or reinstalling, because those destructive steps can remove downloads and sign you out.
