For a first-time viewer, watch the Harry Potter movies in release order. Start with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone—called Philosopher’s Stone in many countries—and continue through the eight-film series. This preserves the intended reveals and the story’s gradual shift from school-year fantasy to its final conflict.
The best way to watch the Harry Potter movies for the first time is release order: begin with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (called Philosopher’s Stone in the United Kingdom and many other countries), then continue through the eight-film Harry Potter series in the order the movies were released.
That order preserves the story’s intended reveals, lets the characters and actors age naturally, and follows the series’ progression from a school-year fantasy to the final battle. The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, but they are better treated as a separate follow-up—or as a chronological rewatch for returning fans.
The Harry Potter movies in release order
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001, U.S.)
Also titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the U.K. and many international markets. This is the same movie, not a separate installment. - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)
The original adaptation contains eight movies because the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was split into two feature films. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden describes the production as spanning all eight Harry Potter films. [CIT-001] [CIT-004]

Why release order is best for a first viewing
The Harry Potter films were made as one continuous eight-film adaptation between 2001 and 2011. Release order reflects the way the filmmakers introduced the world, characters, mysteries, and major revelations to audiences.
- It protects important reveals. Later films assume that you have experienced earlier discoveries in the intended sequence.
- The tone develops naturally. The early school adventures gradually become darker and more serious as Harry, Ron, and Hermione grow older.
- The cast ages with the story. Watching in production order makes the passage of time feel natural rather than jumping backward and forward.
- It keeps the main story easy to follow. You meet Harry at the beginning and stay with his conflict through its conclusion.
If you are introducing the series to someone who has never seen it, watch the eight films above without inserting Fantastic Beasts between them.
Where do the Fantastic Beasts movies fit?
Fantastic Beasts is a prequel film series set decades before Harry’s story. It follows Newt Scamander and explores earlier events involving Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. The first film takes place during the 1920s, before Harry was born. [CIT-005]
There are currently three released Fantastic Beasts films:
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
They are part of the wider Wizarding World, but they are not additional Harry Potter chapters and should not be placed inside the eight-film Harry Potter list.
Every Wizarding World movie in chronological order
If your priority is fictional chronology rather than the best first-time experience, use this order:
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016; story set in the 1920s)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001 release)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
This is a reasonable order for a returning fan who wants more Dumbledore history or the earlier story of Grindelwald. It is not the recommended first-watch order, because the prequels were released after the original eight-film arc and work best when viewed as an expansion of a world you already know.

Is a physical collection worth considering?
For repeat viewers, families, or anyone planning several marathons, a Harry Potter 8-film collection 4K UHD Blu-ray is an alternative to depending on a particular streaming catalog. Current U.S. listings include physical collections and individual discs, while Warner Bros. materials identify official eight-film collections. [CIT-003] [CIT-008]
Before buying, check the exact edition, included discs, subtitles, regional compatibility, price, and stock on the retailer’s live listing. These details vary by release and can change; the phrase “4K UHD” should not be treated as a guarantee that every edition has identical bonus features or packaging.

How long is the marathon?
The eight-film series is a substantial commitment. The films become longer and darker as they progress; for example, current U.S. listings put Prisoner of Azkaban at approximately 141 minutes. [CIT-003] Plan for multiple sessions rather than trying to watch all eight in one day, particularly with younger viewers.
In the United States, the core films are generally rated from PG to PG-13, with later entries containing more intense fantasy peril and darker themes. Check the local rating and your household’s comfort level before starting a family marathon. Ratings and classifications can differ by country.

The planned HBO television adaptation is separate from the movies. Official Wizarding World coverage identifies it as a new adaptation and reports a planned premiere of December 25, 2026. It is not part of the eight-film movie order and should not be inserted into a film marathon. [CIT-007]
Bottom line
For a first viewing, watch Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone), then the remaining seven Harry Potter films in release order through Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Add the three Fantastic Beasts prequels afterward if you want more Wizarding World history. Use chronological order only for a rewatch focused on the fictional timeline.
