Haru Urara, the Japanese racehorse whose official career ended with 113 starts and zero wins, died on September 9, 2025, at age 29. She died at Martha Farm in Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture, where she had lived in retirement. Caretaker Yuko Miyahara told contemporary Japanese media that the mare died at approximately 2:20 a.m. from a colic-related illness. That is the reported cause; a publicly documented postmortem diagnosis has not been established in the available reporting.
Haru Urara’s importance was never captured by her results alone. In the early 2000s, her unbroken losing streak made her a national symbol of persistence, an unlikely source of hope for fans, and a valuable boost to attention around financially troubled local racing in Kochi.
A racing record that became a national story
Japan’s JBIS-Search lists Haru Urara’s domestic racing record as 113 starts, 0 wins. Its detailed record lists all 113 appearances. The phrase “famous for never winning a race” is therefore accurate when it refers to her official competitive racing career.
That wording needs one important qualification: it describes her registered race record, not every later appearance at retirement-horse events or other non-racing occasions. Haru Urara began racing at Kochi Racecourse in November 1998. Reporting places her final competitive appearance in August 2004. Her racehorse registration was eventually canceled in October 2006.

A zero-win record does not, by itself, prove that a horse was the “worst” racehorse in the world. Racehorses compete under different conditions, against different fields, and with different careers. Haru Urara became famous because people attached meaning to her repeated attempts—not because a statistic established an absolute ranking of ability.
Why did Haru Urara become famous?
Haru Urara’s fame grew sharply in Japan during the early 2000s, particularly as she approached and passed 100 consecutive defeats. She represented the opposite of the usual sporting success story. There was no championship, winning streak, or triumphant comeback. Instead, audiences saw a horse that continued to appear at the starting gate despite never finishing first.
That persistence resonated with a country experiencing economic and social uncertainty at the time. Contemporary international coverage described her as an unlikely hero and an underdog whose defeats drew more public attention than many champions’ victories. Fans bought betting tickets connected with her races, sometimes treating them less as a rational wager than as a gesture of support. A losing bet could still function as a vote of confidence.
The attention also arrived when local racing needed it. Kochi Racecourse and other regional racing venues faced serious financial pressure. A feature published by Japan’s National Association of Racing says Haru Urara’s popularity helped bring renewed attention and betting activity to Kochi racing and contributed to a return to profitability after a prolonged period of difficulty. It is more accurate to say that she helped revive attention and revenue than to claim that she single-handedly saved the racecourse.
Her story showed that sporting value and entertainment value are not always the same thing. Haru Urara rarely delivered the conventional result, but she gave spectators a reason to watch, visit Kochi, buy a ticket, and identify with an animal that kept trying.
Her retirement at Martha Farm
After her racing career, Haru Urara eventually moved into retirement. Reporting says Martha Farm in Chiba had cared for her since December 2012, after her racehorse registration had been removed. The farm became a destination for people who wanted to see the mare and pay their respects to a horse they had followed for years.

Retirement changed the meaning of her public role. She was no longer appearing as a competitor whose next start might produce an unlikely victory. She became a living reminder of racing history—and part of a wider conversation about what happens to former racehorses after their competitive careers end.
Following her death, flowers and memorial items appeared at both Martha Farm and Kochi Racecourse. The National Association of Racing’s 2025 feature noted the presence of her racing hood among the items associated with the memorial response. Kochi Racecourse also established a memorial flower stand during its September 12–14, 2025 race meetings, showing that she remained symbolically important to the track and its fans more than two decades after her racing career had ended.
Those reports do not establish that anyone at Martha Farm was responsible for her condition, nor do they provide a basis for speculation about veterinary decisions. The confirmed account is narrower: Haru Urara died at Martha Farm on September 9, 2025, and her caretaker reported a colic-related illness as the cause.
Haru Urara’s story became a film
The early-2000s fascination with the mare also produced a Japanese feature film titled Haru Urara, based on her story. Readers looking for a dramatized version can look for the Haru Urara DVD. Retailer listings document the DVD release, but availability, language, condition, price, and playback compatibility can vary—especially for viewers outside Japan. The film should be approached as a dramatization inspired by the horse’s story, not as an authoritative documentary or complete biographical record.
The real horse and the Umamusume character are not the same
Many people outside Japan encountered Haru Urara through Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Cygames’ multimedia franchise of games, anime, manga, and music. The franchise’s characters are inspired by real racehorses, and a fictionalized, anthropomorphic Haru Urara appears within that world.
The distinction matters. The Umamusume character is an adaptation, not a documentary depiction of the mare’s life. Her personality, appearance, relationships, dialogue, and storylines belong to the fictional franchise. The real Haru Urara was a Japanese thoroughbred with a documented 113-start, zero-win racing record and a later life at Martha Farm.

The game and related media helped introduce the name Haru Urara to a wider international audience, but it would be too broad to claim a particular audience size, donation total, or specific fan behavior without a source documenting that exact claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Haru Urara’s legacy means
Haru Urara’s legacy is unusual because it was built around a record that would ordinarily be treated as failure. Her 113 official starts without a win remained unchanged, but the public interpretation of that record evolved. To fans, the repeated defeats became evidence of persistence. To Kochi, her popularity became an important source of attention during a difficult period for local racing. To people interested in horse welfare, her retirement helped make the aftercare of former racehorses part of the broader story.
It is also important not to turn her life into an overly simple motivational slogan. Haru Urara was a racehorse, not a human athlete choosing to overcome adversity. The emotional meaning came from the relationship audiences formed with her public story and from the way her continued appearances contrasted with the expectation that only winners deserve attention.

She did not win an official race, but she won enduring cultural affection. Her death on September 9, 2025, closed the life of a mare whose greatest impact was felt not in the winner’s circle, but in the people who kept showing up for her.
