Paul became one of the most recognizable early participants. According to Scientific American, he uploaded his likeness voluntarily and later described himself as the first celebrity name-image-and-likeness cameo user. Once that likeness was available, other users began generating videos that made an AI version of Paul appear to:
- announce that he was gay or discuss his sexuality;
- defend LGBTQ+ people;
- apply makeup;
- wear rainbow or traditionally feminine clothing;
- use exaggeratedly camp mannerisms; and
- take part in fabricated, embarrassing, or absurd retail and food-related situations.
Those were synthetic performances, not documentary recordings. They did not establish Paul’s sexual orientation, personal interests, or real-world actions. The headline’s language describes the fictional persona users created in the videos—not verified facts about Paul.
Why Sora’s videos looked real
Sora 2 generated both the moving image and the spoken performance, rather than merely placing a face over an existing recording. Contemporary coverage described some results as unusually convincing. Viewers and commenters could mistake certain clips for genuine social-media footage, especially when the videos used familiar settings, plausible speech patterns, and the visual style of a casual phone recording.
The illusion was not perfect. Reports noted problems such as inconsistent hands, tattoos, and other details. But visible errors are not a complete safety measure: a clip can contain small glitches while still communicating a memorable and apparently authentic claim.

OpenAI also said generated videos included invisible provenance signals and C2PA metadata intended to help identify AI-created media. These measures can assist verification, but they are not a guarantee that every viewer will recognize a clip as synthetic. A watermark may be cropped, obscured, or overlooked, while a reposted video may be separated from its original context.
The social-feed design turned a deepfake into a meme
Sora was presented as more than a video model. Its app was designed as a TikTok-like sharing environment in which users could publish, remix, and build on one another’s creations. Approved cameos made a recognizable person available as a recurring character in that system.

That design changed the character of the event. Instead of one creator making a single fake video, users could treat Paul’s likeness as a meme template. One video suggested a premise; another remixed it; a third pushed the same joke into a more elaborate or humiliating scenario. The participatory format made the creation of a fake celebrity statement feel like a game, even though the output still used a real person’s apparent face and voice.
Paul’s response mixed objection, participation, and promotion
Paul responded publicly rather than quietly disappearing from the trend. In one reaction, he said the AI was getting out of hand. In another, he threatened legal action against people circulating videos that portrayed him doing things he said he would never do.

He also posted a makeup-themed reaction in which he applied makeup himself. That response turned the visual premise of the meme into part of his own performance and helped keep attention on the story.
Reporting also described Paul sharing or stitching some clips while promoting brands and other business interests. That made the episode commercially useful to him and blurred several roles at once: a person objecting to false depictions, a public figure deliberately engaging with a meme, a publicity strategist, and a creator looking to monetize attention.
Those roles should not be collapsed into one conclusion. Paul’s participation in some reactions did not prove that every creator had permission to publish every individual depiction. It also did not make the false statements in the AI videos true.
Why the meme drew LGBTQ+ criticism
The videos were not criticized only because they used AI. LGBTQ-focused coverage argued that much of the joke depended on familiar stereotypes: the idea that a gay man is necessarily interested in makeup, feminine clothing, camp speech, exaggerated gestures, or flamboyant behavior.

Paul is a controversial public figure, and parody of a public figure can be intended as ridicule rather than a sincere statement about LGBTQ+ people. Even so, the repeated association of “he is gay” with humiliation, cosmetic experimentation, or an exaggerated feminine persona can reproduce homophobic framing. The fact that Paul had authorized use of a likeness did not remove that cultural criticism.
The episode therefore involved two separate questions:
- Was the likeness use technically authorized? Paul appears to have opted into the Sora likeness system.
- Were the resulting portrayals harmless or acceptable? That depended on the specific depiction, its context, its audience, and the rights available to Paul—not simply on the existence of a general opt-in.
Consent to a likeness is not consent to every statement
This is the most important distinction in the story. A person may authorize a platform to make a reusable digital likeness available while objecting to a particular fictional claim made with that likeness.
In this case, the consent appears to have covered use of Paul’s visual and audio likeness within Sora’s system. It did not follow automatically that he had personally requested a video in which an AI version of him announced a sexual orientation, defended a political or social cause, applied makeup, or claimed to have done something embarrassing.
OpenAI’s launch materials described the character system as being built around consent-based control of a person’s audio and visual likeness. The Sora 2 system card also identified risks involving unauthorized likeness use and misleading content, and discussed measures including opt-in controls, content restrictions, and provenance signals.
Those safeguards address important risks, but they do not settle every dispute. A platform can require opt-in access and still leave difficult questions about false statements, parody, defamation, publicity rights, privacy, harassment, and the commercial use of a public figure’s identity. The applicable rules can also vary by jurisdiction and by the precise facts of a video.

The fairest description is therefore not simply “Paul was an innocent victim of a deepfake,” nor “Paul consented, so anything was acceptable.” The event was a consent-enabled use of a public figure’s likeness that also demonstrated how quickly users could attach deceptive, stigmatizing, or humiliating claims to that likeness.
How to tell whether a viral celebrity video is real
A convincing appearance is not evidence that a video was filmed. Before treating a celebrity statement as authentic, readers should:

- Check the original source. Look for the person’s verified account, an established news organization, or a full interview rather than an isolated repost.
- Look for context. A clip that begins abruptly or contains only a sentence designed to provoke an emotional reaction deserves extra scrutiny.
- Inspect provenance information. Watermarks, platform labels, C2PA metadata, and other authenticity signals can provide useful evidence, although their absence or presence is not conclusive on its own.
- Compare the voice and image carefully. Watch for unnatural timing, strange mouth movements, inconsistent hands or tattoos, changes in lighting, and edits that hide transitions.
- Search for independent confirmation. If a major public figure really made an unusual announcement, credible reporting and the person’s other public channels may provide corroboration.
- Do not repeat the claim as fact while checking it. Describing a clip as “an AI-generated video depicting Paul saying…” is materially safer and more accurate than saying “Paul said…”
These steps reduce the chance of being misled, but they cannot guarantee detection through visual inspection alone. Synthetic media can be convincing, and reposting can strip away labels and metadata.

The larger lesson
The Jake Paul Sora trend showed why synthetic-media consent cannot be reduced to a single yes-or-no switch. A person may welcome a controlled digital cameo, tolerate parody, object to a false biographical statement, or challenge a commercial use—all at the same time.
It also showed why “fake” does not mean “consequence-free.” A generated clip can shape public opinion, attach a false identity claim to a real person, reinforce stereotypes, generate advertising value, and spread faster than a correction. The fact that the subject is famous, controversial, or willing to participate in some of the joke does not remove the need to label fictional media accurately.
