A scientist’s formal online presentation took an unexpected turn when her elderly Labradoodle began loudly vomiting off camera. Ellie Hurer tried to continue speaking to an audience of more than 30,000 people, but the increasingly unmistakable retching eventually distracted her and made her lose her train of thought.
The 2021 incident later found a new audience when Hurer reposted the clip to TikTok on March 14, 2023. Contemporary reports said the repost had passed roughly 2.2 million views at the time—an earlier media-reported figure, not a current TikTok count.
What happens in the viral presentation clip
Hurer is speaking in a serious, professional setting when a disturbing but increasingly comic sound begins in the background. Her dog, Henry, is not the visual focus of the video. Instead, viewers hear the Labradoodle retching and vomiting somewhere off screen while Hurer attempts to carry on with her presentation.
At first, she tries to maintain her composure. As the sounds continue, however, the interruption becomes impossible to ignore. Reports describe Hurer as becoming distracted and mentally blanking while she tries to remember what she was saying.

That contrast drives the humor: the presentation concerns science and innovation, while the audio increasingly resembles the kind of domestic emergency familiar to anyone who has worked from home with a pet nearby.
Who is Ellie Hurer?
Ellie Hurer is a PhD candidate and visiting lecturer in the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Life and Medical Sciences. The university also identifies her as a science communicator and social-media creator who posts under @myphdexperience.
Her doctoral research involves identifying compounds that could target S100P, a protein associated with pancreatic-cancer-cell proliferation, metastasis, and invasion. That background helps explain why the original presentation was a high-pressure professional event rather than a casual video call.
Where and when did the interruption happen?
The incident took place during 2021. Several reports connect it with the European Inventor Award 2021 ceremony or related online programming. The European Patent Office confirms that the 2021 award ceremony was held digitally on June 17, 2021, but the available official event material does not independently identify Hurer’s individual speaking segment.

One secondary account places the particular interruption in October 2021. Because the available reports do not establish a single definitive date for Hurer’s segment, the most accurate description is simply that the presentation incident happened in 2021, with October reported by one outlet.
The event was unusually intimidating for an online presentation. The University of Hertfordshire said Hurer was speaking to more than 30,000 people, including scientists, inventors, and Nobel laureates. The figure should be understood as an approximate audience description rather than a precisely audited attendance total.
The dog was Henry, an elderly Labradoodle
Reports identify the dog as Henry, Hurer’s Labradoodle. Coverage described him as an elderly dog. Published accounts differed on whether he was 13 or nearly 14, a discrepancy that may reflect the dates on which the reports were written, so a precise age is not necessary to understand the clip.
Available coverage said Henry was fine afterward. It does not establish what caused the vomiting, what he may have eaten, whether a veterinarian treated him, or whether the incident was connected to any particular illness. Those details should not be inferred from a short viral video.

How the clip became viral on TikTok
Hurer reposted the footage to TikTok under @myphdexperience on March 14, 2023. The post included hashtags such as #dogbarf, #funnydog, #funnydogs, #zoommeetingfails, and #embarrassing.
Reports published soon afterward said the video had exceeded approximately 2.2 million views. TikTok view counts can change constantly, and the original post is not reliably accessible through the available verification material, so that number is best treated as a contemporaneous media report rather than the video’s current total.
Why the moment connected with so many viewers
The clip brings together several instantly recognizable experiences:
- Working from home: Pets can interrupt meetings and presentations without warning.
- Professional pressure: Hurer was speaking to a large audience in a formal scientific setting.
- An off-camera surprise: The dog is mostly heard rather than seen, allowing the sound to build anticipation.
- A serious-versus-absurd contrast: Hurer’s subject is science and innovation, while the background noise is unmistakably domestic.
- A relatable loss of composure: Her effort to continue speaking makes the moment feel less like a staged gag and more like an ordinary mishap caught during an important event.
These are editorial explanations for the clip’s appeal, not the results of a measured study of its distribution. There is no verified evidence that one particular hashtag, sound, or TikTok algorithmic feature was responsible for its reach.

What to do after a dog vomits
The video is funny because it captures an awkward interruption, but a dog vomiting should not automatically be treated as harmless. The clip does not provide enough information to assess Henry’s condition, and it should not be used to diagnose him or any other dog.
The ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian immediately when vomiting is severe or accompanied by signs such as loss of appetite, depression, or bloody diarrhea. If a dog may have swallowed a poisonous or potentially hazardous substance, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen. Online information cannot replace professional veterinary advice.
For the non-medical part of the problem, owners dealing with a similar accident may want an enzymatic pet stain and odor remover appropriate for the affected carpet, upholstery, rug, or hard surface. This is a general cleanup suggestion only; it is not a treatment for vomiting, and there is no evidence that Hurer used or endorsed any particular product.
Practical note: Follow the cleaner’s label, test it on an inconspicuous area, ventilate the room as directed, and keep pets away from treated surfaces until the product is safe for them. Cleaning up does not address the cause of repeated or severe vomiting.

The Bottom Line
The clip went viral because a high-stakes scientific presentation collided with an unmistakably ordinary pet emergency. Hurer’s attempt to stay professional while Henry vomited off camera made the moment relatable, but the humor of the video should not be mistaken for evidence that vomiting is medically harmless.
