That is the least confusing way to experience the franchise’s reveals and continuity changes. There is no single, authoritative chronological order for all six films because the later sequels split into different timelines. Terminator Genisys changes the past, while Terminator: Dark Fate follows Terminator 2 instead of continuing the stories told in Terminator 3, Salvation, or Genisys.
Terminator movies in release-date order
- The Terminator (1984)
James Cameron’s original time-travel thriller introduces Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese, Skynet, and the Terminator sent back to kill the future mother of humanity’s resistance leader. - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The direct sequel expands the mythology and returns Sarah Connor and her son, John. It is also the key reference point for the franchise’s later continuity branches. - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
This sequel continues the post-T2 story with John Connor facing a new Terminator and the approaching threat of Judgment Day. - Terminator Salvation (2009)
Set primarily during the future war against Skynet, this film moves away from the modern-day chase structure of the first three movies. It was released in the United States on May 21, 2009. - Terminator Genisys (2015)
Kyle Reese returns to 1984, but the past is no longer the one established by the original film. Paramount presented it as a new chapter built around an altered timeline. - Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
This sequel follows the events of Terminator 2 and takes a separate route from Terminator 3, Salvation, and Genisys. Its U.S. release date was November 1, 2019.
Why release order is best for a first viewing
The Terminator franchise is built around time travel, altered futures, and characters attempting to prevent events that may already have shaped the past. Watching in release order preserves the way the filmmakers originally introduced those ideas.

It also makes the continuity resets easier to understand. The first two films establish the central mythology. Terminator 3 and Terminator Salvation form one post-T2 sequel route. Genisys revisits the original setup but deliberately changes it. Dark Fate then starts from the T2 branch and ignores the other sequel path.
In other words, release order does not pretend that all six movies belong to one uninterrupted story. It lets you see the franchise’s development and then decide which continuity you want to follow.
Is there a chronological order for the Terminator movies?
Only within individual continuities. A single six-film chronological list would be misleading because the movies do not share one stable timeline.
A simplified story-era description might place Terminator Salvation in the future-war period, The Terminator in the 1984 time-travel origin, and Terminator 2 in the next phase of the Connor story. But that does not produce a complete viewing order: Salvation is connected to the sequel route involving Terminator 3, Genisys creates an alternate history, and Dark Fate branches directly from T2.
The safest rule is therefore:
- Use release order for your first franchise marathon.
- Use a continuity-specific order if you want to explore one sequel path.
- Do not treat the six films as one chronological timeline.
Continuity-specific Terminator viewing orders
1. The original sequel path
The Terminator → Terminator 2: Judgment Day → Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines → Terminator Salvation
This is the practical order for viewers who want to follow the first four theatrical releases as a connected sequel route. Salvation then carries the story into the future war against Skynet.
This path is not the franchise’s only continuation of T2. Dark Fate later takes a different approach, which is why it is better described as a branch than as the next film after Salvation.
Rank #2
2. The Dark Fate path
The Terminator → Terminator 2: Judgment Day → Terminator: Dark Fate

This is the cleanest three-film route for viewers who want the continuity that returns to Sarah Connor and explicitly follows Terminator 2. The first two movies provide the character history, time-travel rules, and Judgment Day context that make Dark Fate meaningful.
Dark Fate should not be described as a sequel to Salvation or Genisys. It follows the T2 branch instead.
3. The Genisys branch
Minimal route: The Terminator → Terminator Genisys
Preferred route: The Terminator → Terminator 2: Judgment Day → Terminator Genisys
Genisys is an alternate-timeline story, not a normal fifth chapter after Salvation. Its premise sends Kyle Reese back to 1984, where unexpected changes have already altered the past. Watching the first two films beforehand gives the branch more context, while the two-film route is sufficient if you only want to understand its revised version of the original setup.
Where does Terminator Salvation fit?
Terminator Salvation is the future-war installment in the original post-T2 sequel route. It is best watched after Terminator 3 when following that continuity, even though much of its action takes place later in the story’s internal history.
Rank #3
Do not move it to the front of a franchise marathon simply because it is set primarily after Judgment Day. Release order preserves the context that the film originally expected viewers to have.
Where does Terminator Genisys fit?
Terminator Genisys is best treated as a continuity reboot or alternate-timeline branch. It revisits the 1984 premise but changes key circumstances, so it cannot be inserted cleanly after Salvation in a single linear chronology.

Where does Terminator: Dark Fate fit?
Dark Fate follows Terminator 2: Judgment Day and takes a separate sequel route. It does not continue the continuity established by Terminator 3, and it should not be placed after Salvation or Genisys as though those films were required chapters.
If you only want the continuity most directly connected to Sarah Connor’s story in the first two films, watch The Terminator, Terminator 2, and Dark Fate.

How to own or watch the films
Streaming availability changes by country and over time, so a service that carries one or more films today may not carry them later. Check the current catalog in your country before planning a streaming marathon; do not assume that all six movies are available on one service.

If you only want the core Cameron films, look for current Blu-ray or 4K editions of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. That is also the most useful physical-media route for the three-film Dark Fate continuity.
There is additional anniversary interest in Terminator 2: a 35th-anniversary U.S. theatrical event has been announced for 2026 involving Fathom Entertainment, StudioCanal, and Rialto Pictures. Event dates and participating theaters should be checked before making plans.
Bottom line
Watch the six movies in release order the first time: The Terminator, Terminator 2, Terminator 3, Terminator Salvation, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate. For a second pass, choose the continuity that interests you: the four-film original sequel path, the three-film Dark Fate path, or the alternate-timeline Genisys branch.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best order to watch all the Terminator movies?
For a first viewing, watch The Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009), Terminator Genisys (2015), and Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).
Are all six Terminator movies in the same timeline?
No. Terminator Genisys changes the past and creates an alternate-timeline branch. Terminator: Dark Fate follows Terminator 2 and takes a different sequel route from Terminator 3, Salvation, and Genisys.
What is the Terminator: Dark Fate order?
Watch The Terminator → Terminator 2: Judgment Day → Terminator: Dark Fate. This is the cleanest three-film route for the continuity that directly follows T2.
Should I watch Terminator Genisys after Salvation?
Watch The Terminator and Terminator 2 first, then Terminator Genisys. Genisys is an alternate-timeline branch, not a straightforward sequel to Terminator Salvation.
Which Terminator movie is set during the future war?
Terminator Salvation is primarily set during the future war against Skynet. For the original sequel route, watch it after Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
The Bottom Line
Best overall order: The Terminator (1984) → Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) → Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) → Terminator Salvation (2009) → Terminator Genisys (2015) → Terminator: Dark Fate (2019). The franchise has branching continuities, so there is no single chronological order that cleanly includes all six films.
