The Cameron Crowe movie reached No. 4 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 movies list for the week ending September 8, 2024—more than nine years after its cinema release.
That chart appearance is a streaming second life, not a conventional box-office redemption. Aloha remains a poorly reviewed, commercially unsuccessful film whose casting controversy is inseparable from its reputation. Netflix made it easier for a new audience to sample the movie, but it did not erase the problems that followed the film from its opening weekend.
What happened to Aloha on Netflix?
Aloha appeared at No. 4 on Netflix’s U.S. weekly Top 10 movies chart for the week ending September 8, 2024. It had one week in the ranking.
That is the clearest evidence of the film’s September resurgence. It does not mean Netflix produced the movie, financed it, or turned it into a hit. Aloha was released by Columbia Pictures and associated production companies in 2015; Netflix was the later streaming outlet in the catalog window documented by the platform.

Availability on Netflix changes by country and over time, so the September 2024 chart result should be treated as a dated U.S. streaming snapshot—not a promise that the film remains available everywhere. Netflix’s listing identified the movie as a 2015 PG-13 comedy starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Rachel McAdams.
Why was Aloha considered a flop?
The film opened in the United States on May 29, 2015, with a reported production budget of $37 million. Box Office Mojo records an opening weekend of approximately $9.67 million, a domestic gross of about $21.07 million, an international gross of approximately $5.18 million, and a worldwide theatrical gross of roughly $26.25 million.
| Measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| U.S. release | May 29, 2015 |
| Reported production budget | $37 million |
| U.S. opening | $9.67 million |
| Domestic theatrical gross | $21.07 million |
| International theatrical gross | $5.18 million |
| Worldwide theatrical gross | $26.25 million |
The worldwide theatrical gross did not equal the reported production budget, even before marketing, distribution expenses, and the portion of ticket revenue retained by cinemas are considered. That makes “box-office flop” or “theatrical underperformer” fair descriptions. It does not, by itself, establish the studio’s precise net loss. The complete cost and revenue picture is not available in the cited material.
Box Office Mojo ranked Aloha 104th among 2015 domestic releases by gross. The movie’s commercial performance was therefore weak in both absolute terms and in comparison with the wider year’s theatrical slate.

The film struggled with critics as well as ticket buyers. Rotten Tomatoes lists Aloha at 20% on the Tomatometer from 164 critic reviews and 29% from more than 25,000 audience ratings. Its critical consensus describes the movie as meandering and insubstantial.
The reaction makes more sense when the film’s structure is considered. Aloha is not a simple, conventional romantic comedy. It combines:

- Hawaiian history, culture, and questions of belonging.
Sony categorizes the film as comedy, drama, and romance. Calling it a “rom-com” is useful shorthand for the headline, but it narrows a film that is also a military drama, family story, and critique of the military-industrial world. The overlapping storylines and tonal shifts were part of what critics found unfocused.
Who is in the cast?
Bradley Cooper plays Brian Gilcrest, a damaged former military figure and defense contractor returning to Honolulu for a satellite-launch project. Emma Stone plays Allison Ng, the Air Force officer assigned to monitor him. Rachel McAdams plays Tracy Woodside, Brian’s former love, while John Krasinski plays Tracy’s husband, Woody.
The ensemble also includes Bill Murray as Carson Welch, Danny McBride, Alec Baldwin, Bill Camp, and Jaeden Martell. The recognizable cast was one reason the movie attracted attention despite its difficult mixture of romance, satire, military politics, and cultural commentary.
Netflix’s synopsis emphasizes the most accessible version of the premise: a defense contractor returns to Hawaii, reconnects with an ex-girlfriend, and develops feelings for a military escort. That compact description may also help explain the movie’s streaming appeal. Viewers can decide to sample a star-driven, Hawaii-set film with a few clicks, without making the larger commitment of a cinema ticket.
The Emma Stone casting controversy
The central controversy concerned Emma Stone’s casting as Allison Ng. Contemporary reporting described Ng as having Hawaiian and Chinese heritage, while Stone is white. Because the film is set in Hawaii and presents itself as engaging with Hawaiian culture and history, the casting was widely criticized as whitewashing.
The issue was not simply that a white performer played a character with a different background. It also raised a broader question about who gets to represent specific Asian, Pacific Islander, and multiracial identities in a major Hollywood production—and why a studio would choose a well-known white star for that role.

Stone later acknowledged the criticism and said the experience made her more aware of Hollywood’s history of whitewashing. Cameron Crowe also apologized and accepted responsibility for the casting decision.
It is important, however, to separate documented facts from speculation. The casting controversy clearly affected the public conversation around Aloha. It is not possible from the available evidence to assign it a precise share of the movie’s box-office failure. The film also faced weak reviews, uncertain genre positioning, marketing challenges, release competition, and a modest audience response. Saying that the controversy alone caused the commercial result would go beyond what the evidence establishes.
Why did the movie find an audience on streaming?
Aloha’s Netflix appearance illustrates why theatrical failure and streaming visibility are different measurements.
1. The barrier to sampling is lower
A disappointing theatrical reputation can make a film less attractive at the cinema, where viewers pay for a ticket and spend an evening on the choice. On a subscription streaming service, a recognizable movie can become an easy curiosity click—particularly when it features Cooper, Stone, McAdams, Murray, and a high-profile director.

The whitewashing debate became part of the film’s identity. That is not the same as a positive reevaluation, but it can lead viewers to watch the movie and judge the controversy for themselves. Search interest, social discussion, or a recommendation system can bring an older title back into circulation without changing its original critical record.
3. The premise is immediately legible
Hawaii, romance, military intrigue, satellite technology, and an ensemble of famous actors give Aloha a distinctive thumbnail and elevator pitch. Streaming platforms often place older films in front of people who would not have encountered them during their original theatrical run.

4. Streaming can reframe an older release
In 2015, Aloha was judged as a new studio release competing for theatrical attention. In September 2024, it was an older, star-filled curiosity available in a large digital catalog. The second context can generate sampling even when the first produced disappointing results.
Still, Netflix’s Top 10 placement proves visibility during one reported week. It does not prove that the film became profitable, that its reputation was rehabilitated, or that viewers broadly changed their minds about it. No viewer total or long-term performance figure is established by the cited chart data.

Is Aloha worth watching now?
That depends on what the viewer wants from it.
- For Cameron Crowe fans: the film is an ambitious late-period work with the director’s familiar interest in music, romantic regret, eccentric ensembles, and emotionally unfinished characters.
- For cast completists: it offers an unusually large group of major performers, including Cooper, Stone, McAdams, Murray, Krasinski, Baldwin, and McBride.
- For viewers interested in Hollywood representation: it is a useful case study in how casting decisions can dominate discussion of a film that was also criticized for its story and tone.
- For viewers seeking a tightly constructed romantic comedy: expectations should be moderated. The movie’s military, family, political, and cultural threads make it more hybrid and diffuse than a standard rom-com.
The fairest approach is to watch it as a flawed, complicated studio film rather than as either a secret masterpiece or a controversy that explains everything. Its Netflix resurgence makes the movie newly discoverable; it does not require viewers to accept a critical or commercial reassessment.

Netflix’s September appearance was a catalog-window event, not a new release. Sony’s home-entertainment information identifies digital, Blu-ray, and DVD availability, although the specific service, edition, and stock can vary by country and publication date.
Disclosure: If you prefer to revisit the film without relying on a changing streaming catalog, check the current listing for an Aloha DVD. Verify the region, seller, edition, and availability before purchasing.
A physical copy may be particularly useful for viewers researching the film as a documentary or media-studies subject: streaming access can disappear, while a disc provides a stable reference point for revisiting the movie’s performances, structure, casting, and cultural controversies.

The larger lesson from Aloha’s second life
Aloha did not become a hit because it appeared on Netflix. What changed was its access and context.
Its 2015 theatrical record remains poor: the movie earned approximately $26.25 million worldwide against a reported $37 million production budget, and it received a 20% Tomatometer score. Its casting controversy remains part of the reason the film is remembered. But streaming can give an older title another opportunity to be sampled, discussed, and reassessed by people who did not see it in theaters.
That is best described as renewed visibility, or a streaming second life—not proof of a full rehabilitation. The September 2024 Top 10 appearance shows that audiences were willing to click on Aloha at that moment. It does not settle whether the movie is good, profitable, culturally successful, or redeemed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Aloha a Netflix original?
No. Aloha was a 2015 Columbia Pictures/Regency film written and directed by Cameron Crowe. Netflix later carried the movie in a documented catalog window; it did not produce or finance the film.
Why was Aloha controversial?
Emma Stone’s casting as Allison Ng, a character reported as having Hawaiian and Chinese heritage, was widely criticized as whitewashing because Stone is white. Stone later acknowledged the criticism, and Cameron Crowe apologized for the casting decision.
Did Netflix make Aloha a hit?
There is no evidence in the cited data that Netflix turned the movie into a conventional financial hit. It reached No. 4 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 movies list for the week ending September 8, 2024, which demonstrates streaming visibility for that week—not profitability or lasting critical rehabilitation.
Is Aloha a romantic comedy?
It contains a romantic-comedy storyline, but it is more accurately described as a hybrid comedy-drama with romance. The film also includes military contracting, family conflict, satellite-launch intrigue, and commentary about Hawaiian culture and defense interests.
The Bottom Line
Aloha was a critical and commercial disappointment in 2015, but its appearance at No. 4 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 in September 2024 gave it a measurable second life. That renewed visibility makes the film easier to discover; it does not erase the weak reviews, the box-office shortfall, or the whitewashing controversy that shaped its reputation.
