Best TV Apps for Android TV and Google TV: What to Install First

The best Android TV apps depend on your use case. These picks cover free video, paid streaming, live channels, local files, media servers, customization, and remote control.

The best TV apps for Android TV and Google TV depend on what you watch. Install YouTube first for free video and documentary channels, add the subscription services you already pay for, choose Pluto TV, Tubi, Haystack News, or Plex for free live programming, and use VLC or Kodi for local and network media. The Google TV phone app is the most useful companion when you need a backup remote.

Android TV and Google TV do not have one universal app catalog. The exact apps and features depend on the television or streaming device, operating-system version, manufacturer, hardware, account, and country. This guide is an evidence-based shortlist from official compatibility and feature documentation, not a claim of hands-on performance testing.

Quick picks: what to install first

For most Android TV or Google TV households, start with YouTube, the paid services you already subscribe to, one free live-TV app such as Pluto TV or Tubi, and either VLC or Kodi if you watch files from a USB drive, network share, or home server. Install the Google TV phone app as well if you want a backup remote and easier text entry.

Best for App Why it belongs on the shortlist Important limitation
Free video and documentaries YouTube Creator channels, live news, sports, podcasts, music, movies, shows, and kid controls Advertising is part of the experience; some users report freezes or crashes
Mainstream subscription viewing Netflix Large movie and series library with profiles Compatibility and maximum resolution depend on the device and plan
Family and franchise viewing Disney+ Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and other family-oriented catalogs Supported devices and catalogs vary by country
Renting and buying individual titles Prime Video Prime content plus rentals, purchases, and add-on subscriptions Not every title is included with Prime
Free live channels Pluto TV, Tubi, Haystack News, or Plex Ad-supported live programming and news without another conventional subscription Channel availability is regional and changes over time
Local and network files VLC Plays many video and audio formats, subtitles, network streams, and NAS files Playback still depends on the TV or box’s hardware decoding
Custom media libraries Kodi Flexible organization for local libraries and network sources Third-party add-ons require careful attention to copyright and security
Remote control Google TV app for Android phones Official phone-based remote with a phone keyboard It controls the TV; it is not primarily a streaming app for the television screen

Android TV and Google TV are related, but not identical

“Android TV” is commonly used as an umbrella term for televisions and streaming devices that run Google’s television operating system. Google TV is the newer Google-branded interface found on some televisions and streaming devices; it uses Android TV OS underneath but presents content and recommendations differently.

  • LOW-NOISE SIGNAL AMPLIFIER — Helps offset cable loss, minimize reception dropouts and strengthen signals already being received by compatible over-the-air TV antennas
  • QUICK, TOOL-FREE INSTALLATION — Connects easily between your antenna and TV using standard coaxial connections; includes AC power adapter for convenient indoor use
  • NEXTGEN TV READY — Compatible with ATSC 3.0 technology to support current and future over-the-air television standards where available

The distinction matters less when choosing apps than the device details do. The app catalog and available features can depend on the exact television or streaming box, Android TV OS version, manufacturer, hardware capabilities, digital-rights support, and country. A title or app that is available on one certified Google TV device may not be available on an older television or an uncertified Android-based box.

The most reliable first check is the Google Play Store built into the television or streaming device. If an app is not listed there, do not assume that downloading a random APK will make it work properly. Check the app publisher’s compatibility page and the device manufacturer’s support documentation instead.

Best Android TV apps by use case

1. YouTube: best all-purpose free video app

YouTube is the most broadly useful first installation, particularly for documentary viewers. Its Android TV app brings together creator videos, music, live news, sports, podcasts, movies, and shows. It also supports personalized accounts and kid-account controls, so it can serve both a shared living-room television and separate family profiles.

It is a strong choice for free documentaries and explainers because independent filmmakers, broadcasters, museums, universities, and specialist channels can all publish there. The trade-off is that the catalog is uneven: verify the source, date, and rights status of a documentary rather than assuming that every upload is authorized or accurate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube is free to install, but the normal experience includes advertising. The Play Store listing also includes optional in-app purchases. User reviews mention stuttering, freezes, and crashes on some setups; those are user reports rather than an independent reliability test, so they should be treated as possible troubleshooting clues, not proof that the app is generally unreliable.

2. Netflix: best mainstream subscription library

Netflix remains the straightforward pick for a household that already pays for Netflix and wants a polished library of movies and series, profiles, and a familiar television interface. It is also a practical place to look for high-profile documentary films and documentary series, although the exact catalog depends on the country and changes over time.

Netflix documents support for many smart televisions and streaming players, including devices from manufacturers such as Hisense, Sony, and TCL, as well as Chromecast-compatible setups. That does not mean every Android TV device is supported. If Netflix does not appear in the device’s Google Play Store, Netflix says the device may be incompatible. An older operating-system version or unsupported hardware may require a different streaming device.

Do not promise a particular resolution simply because the television is labelled 4K. Maximum resolution can depend on the device, the Netflix plan, the title, the app version, the connection, and the television’s content-protection path.

3. Disney+: best for family catalogs and major franchises

Disney+ is the natural choice for households looking for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and other family-focused programming. Where the service and bundle are offered, subscribers may also see Hulu-related content, but that arrangement is territory-specific and should not be generalized worldwide.

Disney’s support documentation lists Android TV among its supported connected-TV platforms and identifies Android TV devices running Android OS 6.0 or later, including selected models and boxes from Hisense, Philips, Sony Bravia, TCL, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, and onn. devices.

Those examples are not a guarantee that every device from those brands will work. Check the Play Store listing on the actual television or box, especially if it is an older model, imported from another region, or running a modified version of Android.

4. Prime Video: best for Prime members, rentals, and purchases

Prime Video is more than a single subscription catalog. Depending on location and title, the app can combine content included with a Prime membership, advertising-supported programming, rentals, purchases, and third-party add-on subscriptions. That makes it useful for viewers who want one television app for both an ongoing service and occasional documentary rentals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important billing distinction is simple: not every Prime Video title is included with Prime. Look for the specific access label before starting playback. A title may require a rental fee, purchase, separate channel subscription, or advertising-supported access even when it appears in the Prime Video interface.

Amazon documents support across various smart TVs, set-top boxes, media players, game consoles, and mobile devices. As with the other paid services, location, device model, app support, and title rights determine what is actually available.

5. Pluto TV, Tubi, Haystack News, and Plex: best free live-TV complements

If the goal is to reduce paid subscriptions rather than add another one, begin with one or more free, ad-supported services. Google’s Android TV guidance specifically identifies Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi as providers whose free live channels can appear in the Live section after their apps are installed. This aggregation is documented for supported Google TV experiences in the United States; it should not be assumed to work identically in every country.

2026 TV Antenna for Smart TV
  • This HD antenna is compatible with both smart TVs and older models.
  • Signal for Better Reception on All TVs
  • Pluto TV is useful for channel-style viewing, with scheduled programming rather than only an on-demand library.
  • Tubi is a free, advertising-supported source for on-demand films and shows, with availability varying by territory.
  • Haystack News is aimed at news browsing and can be a useful complement to a documentary-oriented setup.
  • Plex combines free live TV features with access to a user’s own media server, making it more versatile than a simple free-channel app.

“Free” normally means ad-supported, limited by region, or both. Channel lineups and on-demand catalogs can change without notice, so these apps work best as complements rather than guaranteed replacements for a paid service.

6. Plex: best bridge between free streaming and a personal media server

Plex deserves a separate mention because it solves two different problems. Its Android TV and Google TV app can provide free live programming, and it can connect the television to a Plex Media Server containing your own legally obtained video, music, and photos.

Account linking can be completed using the short code shown by the television app. Plex documents that some personal-media playback features may require unlocking the app or having Plex Pass, depending on the feature and app version. Therefore, install Plex first and check the exact feature requirement before paying for anything.

Plex is especially useful for a household that has ripped or downloaded its own permitted media, maintains a NAS, or wants a consistent library interface across several screens. It is less useful if you only want a simple, no-account live-channel experience.

7. VLC for Android: best for local files and network streams

VLC is the clearest recommendation when you already have media and do not need another subscription catalog. VideoLAN’s Android download documentation lists support for video and audio files, network streams, DVD ISO files, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, NAS or shared drives, and Android TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes VLC a practical player for:

  • Video copied to a USB drive or local device storage
  • Files stored on a network-attached storage device or shared computer
  • Network streams
  • Videos with separate subtitle files or multiple audio tracks
  • Audio playback as well as video

VLC cannot overcome every hardware limitation. VideoLAN notes that hardware decoding is not supported on every Android device. A low-powered box may struggle with a high-bitrate file, unusual codec, or demanding resolution even if VLC can open the file. If playback is jerky, try a lower-bitrate version, a simpler format, or a device with stronger supported hardware decoding.

8. Kodi: best customizable media-center option

Kodi is for users who want to build a media center rather than simply open a streaming catalog. It can organize local libraries and network sources and provides a highly configurable television interface. Kodi’s official Android download page lists version 21.3, “Omega,” along with Google Play and official Android download routes; the version may change after publication.

Kodi itself is legitimate media-center software. The legal and security risk comes from what a user adds to it. Use authorized sources and official or reputable add-ons, and avoid add-ons that promise unauthorized access to copyrighted films, sports, or television channels. A long list of plug-ins is not automatically an advantage: each extra source can create maintenance, privacy, compatibility, or security problems.

As Kodi states, success depends on the capabilities of the particular Android device. Check available storage, network access, file formats, and remote-control behavior before building a large library around an inexpensive or unsupported box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Google TV app: best companion remote for an Android phone

The Google TV app on an Android phone can act as a remote for a compatible Android TV or Google TV device. It is useful when the physical remote is lost, when entering a long password, or when searching is easier with a phone keyboard.

To pair it, open the Google TV app, choose the remote-control option, select the television or streaming device, and complete the pairing code shown on the TV screen. Google’s troubleshooting guidance requires the phone and television to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the TV does not appear, confirm that both devices are on the same network, disable any guest-network isolation, and restart the app and TV before trying again.

This is primarily a control app, not a way to turn the phone into a second television-screen streaming service. It is the first remote app to try because it follows Google’s official control path; third-party remote apps can be less predictable and may request more permissions than necessary.

Optional accessories that solve real Android TV problems

The phone remote is convenient, but it does not eliminate the need for physical accessories in every home. If the original remote is lost or damaged, look for an Android TV remote replacement matched to the exact television or streaming-device model. Remote layouts, pairing methods, voice buttons, infrared support, and shortcut buttons are not universal. A generic remote may power the TV but fail to control menus or launch the expected apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you frequently type searches, Wi-Fi passwords, or server addresses, a Bluetooth keyboard for Android TV can be a useful optional upgrade rather than a requirement. Google documents Bluetooth accessory pairing on Google TV, but compatibility still depends on the device and keyboard. Pair it through the TV’s Bluetooth settings and avoid buying one solely for occasional searches if the phone remote already meets your needs.

For Android TV gaming, an Android TV game controller can be paired over Bluetooth on compatible hardware. Again, this is an add-on for a specific use case, not something needed to watch video. Check whether the game, TV, and controller support the same input features before buying.

How to install TV apps safely

  1. Open the device’s Play Store. On Android TV this is normally available from the Apps row or app launcher. Google TV interfaces may place app search under the Apps tab. Labels differ by manufacturer and software version.
  2. Search for the exact app and publisher. Confirm that the listing is the official YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, Plex, VideoLAN, Kodi, or Google app rather than a similarly named third-party utility.
  3. Check availability before planning around it. Read the device’s listing, required Android version, country restrictions, and any publisher notes. The on-device Play Store is more useful than a generic web search because it reflects the device’s current compatibility signals.
  4. Install and sign in only when needed. Free services may still require an account for profiles or synchronization. For paid services, verify which company is billing you and which plan includes the content you want.
  5. Update the TV and apps. Firmware and app updates can address compatibility problems and security issues. If an app fails immediately after installation, update the operating system and app before attempting more invasive fixes.
  6. Keep Play Protect enabled. Google says Play Protect checks Play Store apps before download and can inspect apps installed from unknown sources. It is not a substitute for judgment, but it is an important reason to prefer the Play Store over random APK sites.

What to do when an app is missing or will not play

The app does not appear in the Play Store

First check the country and the exact device model. Then check the publisher’s support page and the manufacturer’s software-support page. Netflix specifically says that an absent Netflix listing on an Android TV device can indicate incompatibility. Do not treat sideloading as a guaranteed workaround: the app may refuse to install, fail certification checks, lack remote-friendly controls, or be unable to play protected video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If several major apps are missing, the device may be an older or uncertified Android box rather than a fully supported Android TV product. In that case, a certified Android TV/Google TV streaming device can be a more dependable fallback than repeatedly installing unofficial packages. Check the exact model, current OS support, regional availability, and required ports before replacing anything.

The app installs but video will not play

  • Restart the app and the TV or streaming device.
  • Install pending app and system updates.
  • Check the account, subscription, title-access label, and country availability.
  • Test another title to distinguish an account or rights issue from a general playback issue.
  • For local files, check the codec, bitrate, subtitle format, network connection, and hardware-decoding limits.
  • For streaming services, check the network connection and any device-specific resolution or content-protection requirements.

The app works, but the catalog is different from a friend’s

That is usually a rights or regional-availability difference rather than an Android TV fault. Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, free live-TV providers, and Plex features can all vary by country, title, account, device, or date. Use the service’s own listing for your location instead of relying on an older article or a screenshot from another market.

You uninstall an app but still receive charges

Removing an app does not cancel its subscription. Cancel through the billing provider: that may be Google Play, the streaming company, a television provider, or another platform. Keep the app installed until you have confirmed the cancellation and the end date of the billing period.

Which combination is right for you?

  • For a simple documentary household: YouTube plus the paid service you already use, with Google TV on your phone as a backup remote.
  • For free viewing: YouTube, one or more of Pluto TV, Tubi, Haystack News, and Plex, accepting that ads and regional limits apply.
  • For a family television: YouTube with kid-account controls, Disney+ where available, and profiles on the subscription services the household already pays for.
  • For rentals and occasional purchases: Prime Video, while checking whether each title is included, ad-supported, rented, purchased, or part of an add-on subscription.
  • For a home media collection: Plex if you want a server-based library and optional live channels; VLC for direct file playback; Kodi if you want extensive customization and are willing to manage sources carefully.
  • For an older or limited television: verify the Play Store catalog first. If core services are absent, compare a certified streaming device rather than assuming every Android app can be sideloaded successfully.

Bottom line

There is no single best TV app for every Android TV or Google TV device. YouTube is the best first installation for free, varied viewing; Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video are sensible choices when their catalogs and billing fit your household; Pluto TV, Tubi, Haystack News, and Plex add free live programming; VLC and Kodi handle personal media; and the Google TV phone app solves remote-control and typing problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by use case, then verify the exact device and country in Google Play. That one check prevents most compatibility surprises, especially with older televisions, imported hardware, and inexpensive Android boxes.
