The ten picks below are separated into theatrical releases, streaming movies and series, and live viewing. Availability, prices, and streaming services may have changed since that weekend.
Note on dates: This guide was originally published for the weekend of February 8–9, 2025. That weekend has passed, so the availability and event details below are historical rather than a current schedule. Streaming libraries, prices, and regional access may have changed.
The original list was broader than its “movies and shows to stream” label suggests. It included two films released in theaters, five streaming movie-and-series picks, one returning reality show, and two live television events. Together, they cover nearly every kind of weekend viewing: romantic action, horror, comedy, comfort drama, a fictionalized true-crime story, animated superhero violence, a tearjerker, football, and adoptable puppies.

Best new movies to see in theaters
1. Love Hurts
Love Hurts is the choice for a date night that wants more momentum than a conventional romance. Ke Huy Quan plays a former hitman who has rebuilt his life as a realtor. That calmer existence is disrupted when his brother comes looking for revenge, dragging his old identity back into the present.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The result is a genre blend: romantic comedy setup, action-movie consequences, and a lead character trying to keep his past from destroying his new life. It was identified as a theatrical release for February 7, 2025, making it one of the weekend’s two new cinema options. Because it is a theatrical title, look for local showtimes rather than assuming it is included with a streaming subscription.
2. Heart Eyes
For viewers who prefer their Valentine’s Day imagery with a body count, Heart Eyes is the obvious alternative. The film’s killer targets couples around Valentine’s Day, while Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt play two people who are mistaken for a romantic pair.
Its central joke and horror premise are the same: being perceived as a couple can make you a target. That makes it a natural pick for horror fans, couples who want deliberately dark entertainment, or anyone looking for a date movie that is emphatically not sentimental. Like Love Hurts, it was listed as a February 7, 2025 theatrical release, not a movie available to stream that weekend.

3. Kinda Pregnant — Netflix
Amy Schumer plays Lainy, a recently single woman who becomes envious of her friend’s pregnancy. Her solution is to wear a fake baby bump, creating a lie that becomes increasingly difficult to manage when she meets Josh, played by Will Forte.

- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Kinda Pregnant is the low-commitment movie-night option in this group: a broad, high-concept comedy built around an immediately understandable deception. The cast also includes Jillian Bell, Brianne Howey, Urzila Carlson, and Lizze Broadway. Netflix’s preview confirmed the false-pregnancy premise and the February 2025 release, but current availability should be checked directly because Netflix catalogs vary by country and change over time.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar — Netflix
The most documentary-adjacent title on the list is also the one that requires the most careful description. In this six-episode limited series, Kaitlyn Dever portrays Belle Gibson, the Australian wellness influencer whose claims that she had cured terminal brain cancer through wellness practices were exposed as fraudulent.
Do not treat Apple Cider Vinegar as a documentary or a fully factual biography. Netflix describes it as “true-ish”: a fictionalized drama inspired by real reporting, the real fraud case, and the book The Woman Who Fooled the World. Characters and events have been fictionalized.
That framing does not make the subject less important. The series is a strong choice for viewers interested in wellness culture, medical misinformation, social-media deception, and the psychology of online influence. It asks how an appealing personal story can become more persuasive than evidence—and how audiences, platforms, and institutions respond when that story starts to collapse.

5. Sweet Magnolias, season 4 — Netflix
If the weekend calls for warmth rather than murder, fraud, or superhero brutality, season 4 of Sweet Magnolias is the comfort-watch selection. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen continue navigating relationships, family, careers, and upheaval in Serenity, South Carolina.
Netflix listed the fourth season as streaming from February 6, 2025. It is designed for viewers who want a familiar ensemble and continuing relationship drama rather than a story that demands constant suspense. New viewers may get more from starting earlier seasons, while returning fans can use the weekend to settle back into the show’s community-centered rhythm.
6. Invincible, season 3 — Prime Video
Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a teenager whose father appears to be a heroic superhuman. The truth about his father’s identity and behavior changes the stakes, turning the series into a violent, serialized examination of power, family, loyalty, and consequence.
Season 3 was listed as returning on February 6, 2025, with the first three episodes released together and further episodes arriving weekly. That makes it a useful weekend binge without making the entire season available at once.

This is not a family-oriented superhero cartoon. Its appeal is precisely the contrast between animation and mature, often graphic storytelling. Choose it if you want continuing comic-book drama, sharp reversals, and a larger serialized plot—not if you are looking for a light standalone superhero adventure.
7. We Live in Time — rental, purchase, or subscription access
Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield play Almut and Tobias in this romantic drama, which follows their relationship across a decade as illness reshapes their lives. It is the list’s emotional tearjerker and the clearest choice for viewers who missed the film during its theatrical run.
The cited Prime Video listing showed access through Cinemax or HBO Max channels, along with rental and purchase options. Those routes—and their prices—are time-sensitive and region-dependent, so verify the current listing before paying. Unlike the Netflix and Prime Video original selections above, this is a 2024 film whose availability may move between services.

8. Super Bowl LIX
Super Bowl LIX was the weekend’s dominant live event, and it belongs on the list even though the article’s broader purpose was to offer alternatives to sports. The February 9, 2025 game featured the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with FOX and Tubi among the documented viewing paths.
Best Value
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Because this is now a historical guide, it should not be read as a recommendation to watch the game live tonight. Its inclusion preserves the original weekend context: some viewers wanted counterprogramming, while others wanted a companion plan before, during, or after the broadcast.
9. Puppy Bowl XXI
Puppy Bowl XXI was the family-friendly alternative to the football broadcast—and more than a novelty. Warner Bros. Discovery’s event information identified a 2 p.m. Eastern Time start on February 9, 2025, running for three hours and featuring 142 rescue puppies from 80 shelters across 40 states and two countries.
The event was simulcast on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, TBS, truTV, Max, and discovery+. Its strongest service element was the connection to adoption awareness: the puppies represented shelters and rescue organizations, giving viewers a way to learn about adoptable animals and animal-welfare work.
If you are looking for adoption information after watching, use verified shelter or rescue resources. Do not assume that buying unrelated dog merchandise supports the participating shelters unless that connection is explicitly documented.

One practical way to simplify multi-platform viewing
Several selections originally pointed to different services, including Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Tubi, and discovery+. If an older television lacks the apps you need, an Amazon Fire TV Stick is an optional HDMI streaming device that can provide access to major apps such as Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and Tubi. It is not required for any title in this guide, and the device does not include every streaming subscription; paid services may still require separate accounts.
Which pick fits your weekend?
- For a theatrical date: Choose Love Hurts for romance mixed with action, or Heart Eyes for horror with a Valentine’s Day hook.
- For a quick comedy: Try Kinda Pregnant.
- For a serious, media-focused drama: Watch Apple Cider Vinegar, while remembering that it is fictionalized rather than documentary.
- For comfort viewing: Settle into Sweet Magnolias season 4.
- For mature superhero storytelling: Start or continue Invincible season 3.
- For an emotional film: Look for We Live in Time through the current rental, purchase, or subscription options in your region.
- For live sports: The original weekend’s main event was Super Bowl LIX.
- For family viewing and an adoption-focused event: Puppy Bowl XXI was the alternative broadcast.
In short, the February 8–9, 2025 watchlist worked because it did not pretend every viewer wanted the same kind of entertainment. It offered new theatrical releases, easy streaming comedies, serialized drama, a fictionalized account of a real wellness scandal, returning comfort television, mature animation, a romantic tearjerker, football, and rescue puppies. For publication today, use it as a historical guide—or replace the dated live events and weekend availability with a newly researched weekend schedule.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: This is a historical February 8–9, 2025 watchlist, not a current weekend schedule. For the broadest range of choices, start with Kinda Pregnant or Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix, Invincible on Prime Video, one of the two theatrical releases, or the family-friendly Puppy Bowl XXI event. Check current regional availability before streaming or purchasing anything.
