Watch David Lynch’s 10 directed features in release order for the fullest career overview. Start with Blue Velvet for the most approachable blend of mystery and surrealism, The Elephant Man for a more conventional drama, or Mulholland Drive if dream logic and Hollywood mystery are your main interests.

The best way to watch every David Lynch feature is in release order: begin with Eraserhead (1977) and finish with Inland Empire (2006). For a gentler entry point, start with The Elephant Man; for the most representative introduction to Lynch’s mystery, menace, humor, and surrealism, start with Blue Velvet. Mulholland Drive is an excellent gateway if dream logic and Hollywood noir are what brought you here.

This guide counts the 10 feature-length films Lynch directed. It does not count the Twin Peaks television series, shorts, documentaries, music videos, or internet projects as movies. Lynch died in January 2025 at 78, making Inland Empire his final feature film.

Every David Lynch movie in release order

Year Film Best approached as
1977 Eraserhead An industrial, nightmarish debut and the clearest source of Lynch’s signature atmosphere.
1980 The Elephant Man A compassionate, relatively direct period drama and the easiest starting point for many viewers.
1984 Dune A visually ambitious, controversial studio-scale science-fiction adaptation.
1986 Blue Velvet A suburban mystery that moves between familiar American surfaces and disturbing surrealism.
1990 Wild at Heart A heightened crime-romance road movie driven by music, violence, and genre style.
1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me A feature prequel to the television series, centered on Laura Palmer’s final days.
1997 Lost Highway A deliberately disorienting film about unstable identity, chronology, and transformation.
1999 The Straight Story A quiet, G-rated road film and Lynch’s strongest counterpoint to his darker reputation.
2001 Mulholland Drive A dreamlike Hollywood mystery and one of Lynch’s most recognized films.
2006 Inland Empire An extreme digital experiment and a fitting final stop for a complete Lynch survey.

Where to begin if you are new to David Lynch

Start with Blue Velvet for the best all-around introduction

Blue Velvet is the most useful bridge between conventional storytelling and Lynch’s more abstract work. It has a recognizable mystery structure, but its small-town setting gradually reveals erotic menace, violence, dark comedy, and surreal tonal shifts. It prepares you for Mulholland Drive without asking you to begin with Lynch’s most difficult film.

Start with The Elephant Man for the most accessible drama

If you want an emotionally direct film before exploring Lynch’s nightmares, choose The Elephant Man. Its period setting, compassionate character focus, and comparatively clear narrative make it the safest recommendation for viewers who are unsure about surrealism.

Start with Eraserhead if you want “Lynchian” cinema at its source

Eraserhead is the right first choice for viewers drawn to oppressive sound design, industrial textures, grotesque imagery, and films that treat anxiety as an environment rather than a problem to be solved. It is not the right introduction if you need a conventional plot or reassuring answers.

Start with Mulholland Drive if that is the film that brought you here

Mulholland Drive is a natural entry point into Lynch’s dreamlike approach to identity, performance, Hollywood mythology, and narrative structure. It rewards discussion and repeat viewings, but it is better experienced as an enigmatic work than as a puzzle with one officially supplied solution.

The best order for watching all 10 films

For a complete career survey, use release order. It lets you see Lynch move from the handmade industrial nightmare of Eraserhead to the classical drama of The Elephant Man, the troubled studio experiment of Dune, the suburban darkness of Blue Velvet, and the heightened genre world of Wild at Heart.

  8. The Straight Story

  10. Inland Empire

The order also makes the contrasts more meaningful. After the fractured identity structures of Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, The Straight Story feels like a deliberate change of scale and temperament rather than an anomaly to be skipped. Saving Inland Empire for last lets it function as the culmination of Lynch’s interest in performance, layered realities, and unstable identity.

What to know about Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is a feature-length prequel connected to the television series. It follows Laura Palmer and the days leading up to her death. You can watch it on its own, but the richest context comes from watching the original Twin Peaks series first, then the film, and then Twin Peaks: The Return.

The film contains material involving sexual abuse, coercion, violence, and trauma. Its place in the movie list is separate from the television series: the series is not one of Lynch’s 10 directed features, while the film is.

How to watch the David Lynch films in the U.S.

Availability is U.S.-specific and changes frequently. The routes below reflect researched U.S. listings checked July 27–29, 2026. Recheck each title immediately before watching; a service listed here may change its subscription, advertising, library, or rental status.

Film Researched U.S. routes Practical note
Eraserhead Criterion Channel; other subscription and ad-supported services; digital rental or purchase A strong first film for viewers comfortable with body horror and abstraction.
The Elephant Man Criterion Channel; digital rental, purchase, download, and physical disc The most accessible entry for viewers seeking a direct, compassionate drama.
Dune Digital rental or purchase; DVD and Blu-ray No free streaming option appeared in the researched snapshot.
Blue Velvet Free ad-supported services; Kanopy; Hoopla; digital rental or purchase Library availability may depend on your institution and location.
Wild at Heart Criterion Channel; digital rental or purchase Expect crime, violence, romance, and deliberately heightened performances.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me Digital rental or purchase; included in Criterion’s Lynch collection Watch with the original series first if you want maximum context.
Lost Highway Criterion Channel; digital rental or purchase Best saved until you are comfortable with deliberate ambiguity.
The Straight Story Disney+; Criterion Channel; digital rental or purchase A G-rated, quiet road film that shows another side of Lynch.
Mulholland Drive Digital rental or purchase No free streaming option was listed in the researched snapshot; check current listings before subscribing anywhere.
Inland Empire Criterion Channel; Max-related services; ad-supported services; digital purchase Save it for last if you want to experience Lynch’s most formally radical feature as a culmination.

The most efficient streaming strategy

Criterion Channel is the most recurring subscription route in the researched listings. It appeared for Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Inland Empire. That does not mean all six—or all 10 Lynch features—will be included at the same time. Confirm the individual title pages before signing up.

For titles outside your current subscriptions, transactional viewing is the practical fallback. Listings repeatedly identified Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home as rental or purchase routes, but the storefront, format, price, and availability can vary by date. Separate these options when comparing them:

  • Subscription streaming: included in a paid service, subject to catalog rotation.
  • Free with ads: no rental charge, but advertising and availability may vary.
  • Library streaming: services such as Kanopy and Hoopla generally require access through an eligible library or institution.
  • Rent: temporary access with a viewing window set by the storefront.
  • Buy digitally: access tied to the retailer’s platform and licensing terms.
  • Buy on disc: the most durable option when streaming rights rotate, although individual releases may be needed.

If you want to own all 10 films

Physical media is the most reliable approach to a long-term Lynch project, but do not assume there is one complete David Lynch box set containing all 10 directed features. Criterion’s official Lynch collection includes Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr., and Inland Empire. Dune, Wild at Heart, and The Straight Story may require other editions or retailers.

For collectors, compare David Lynch Criterion Collection Blu-ray releases with title-specific DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K editions. Check the exact film, region compatibility, format, and whether the listing is an individual release rather than a misleadingly titled “collection.” Building the complete 10-film library may mean combining Criterion editions with other physical releases.

Film-by-film guide

Eraserhead (1977)

Lynch’s first feature establishes his industrial textures, oppressive sound world, grotesque imagery, and resistance to conventional plot mechanics. It is less a conventional story than an extended encounter with dread, responsibility, isolation, and bodily unease. Watch it early if you want to understand where the adjective “Lynchian” begins.

The Elephant Man (1980)

This is Lynch’s most straightforwardly dramatic feature. Its period setting and emotional clarity make it an excellent first film, especially for viewers who might otherwise find Eraserhead too severe. Its relative directness should not obscure its visual control or its concern with dignity and spectacle.

Dune (1984)

Dune is the outlier in the filmography: a large-scale science-fiction adaptation made within demanding studio conditions. Treat it as a visually ambitious and contested interpretation of Frank Herbert’s novel, not as the definitive version of the book and not necessarily as the best starting point for Lynch.

Blue Velvet (1986)

A young man’s discovery of a severed ear leads into a mystery beneath the surface of an apparently ordinary American community. The film’s power comes from how it places crime, erotic menace, violence, comedy, and dreamlike imagery beside the familiar. It remains the strongest bridge between Lynch’s accessible and abstract modes.

Wild at Heart (1990)

This road movie and crime romance is louder and more openly stylized than Blue Velvet. Its lovers move through a heightened genre landscape of music, danger, violence, and flamboyant performances. It is a good next step for viewers interested in how Lynch reshapes romance and pulp conventions.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)

The film shifts attention from the mystery surrounding Laura Palmer to Laura herself and the trauma surrounding her final days. That change in emphasis helps explain why it may feel harsher and more emotionally concentrated than the television series. Watch it with the abuse and trauma warning above, and ideally after the original series.

Lost Highway (1997)

Lost Highway intensifies Lynch’s interest in doubled identities, unstable chronology, and psychological transformation. Its deliberate disorientation is part of the design, so it works better after Blue Velvet or Eraserhead than as a first exposure. Approach it as an experience of uncertainty rather than a film obligated to explain every transition.

The Straight Story (1999)

Alvin Straight travels by lawn mower to visit his estranged brother in this quiet, human-scale road film. Its G rating, patient pace, and emotional plainness make it the clearest reminder that Lynch’s filmography cannot be reduced to nightmares and surrealism. It is especially valuable in release order because its gentleness arrives between two formally challenging periods.

Mulholland Drive (2001)

This dreamlike Hollywood mystery uses performance, identity, desire, and cinematic illusion to create a narrative that shifts beneath the viewer. It is one of Lynch’s most recognized films and a natural companion to Blue Velvet. Rather than searching for a single authorized interpretation, pay attention to recurring images, changes in identity, and the boundary between performed and lived experience.

Inland Empire (2006)

Lynch’s final feature is also one of his most radical. Shot with digital video, it fragments performance, identity, space, and nested realities into a deliberately unstable experience. It is best framed as a culmination of his formal interests, not as an introductory film. If you watch the 10 features in order, it provides the strongest sense of an endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best David Lynch movie to watch first?

For most first-time viewers, start with Blue Velvet. It combines a recognizable mystery with Lynch’s dark humor, erotic menace, surrealism, and suburban unease. Choose The Elephant Man if you prefer a more direct emotional drama, or Eraserhead if you want Lynch’s most uncompromising early style.

Should I watch Twin Peaks before Fire Walk with Me?

The film is a feature prequel connected to the Twin Peaks television series. It can be watched independently, but the recommended order for the richest context is the original Twin Peaks series, Fire Walk with Me, and then Twin Peaks: The Return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is every David Lynch movie available on one streaming service?

No single subscription service should be assumed to carry all 10 films at once. Criterion Channel appeared repeatedly in the researched U.S. listings, while digital rental or purchase was the main fallback. Catalogs change, so verify each title before subscribing or paying.

Is there a complete David Lynch movie box set?

No. Criterion’s official Lynch collection includes seven of the 10 directed features: Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr., and Inland Empire. A complete physical library may require additional editions of Dune, Wild at Heart, and The Straight Story.

The Bottom Line

Watch the 10 directed features in release order for the fullest career arc. Start with Blue Velvet for the best balance of mystery and surrealism, The Elephant Man for accessibility, or Mulholland Drive if dream logic is the attraction. In the U.S., check each title shortly before viewing: Criterion Channel recurs across the filmography, while digital rental, purchase, library, ad-supported, and physical-disc options fill the gaps.
