John Cena defeated Randy Orton to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship
The headline match was built around one of WWE’s defining rivalries: John Cena against Randy Orton, “one last time.” The St. Louis setting gave Orton a natural home-state advantage, while Cena entered as champion and as the increasingly antagonistic figure in his farewell-era storyline.
Before the event, WWE’s official prediction selected Cena to retain. The logic was that Cena’s championship reign and farewell narrative still had more story to explore, even though Orton’s hometown setting and their shared history made an Orton victory an attractive alternative.
Cena did retain, but not cleanly. The match descended into chaos, with multiple officials being knocked down and R-Truth becoming involved. Orton hit RKOs on officials, and Cena ultimately used an uppercut below the belt before striking Orton with the championship belt and pinning him. WWE’s official results recap documents the disputed finish.
The result preserved Cena as champion while reinforcing his role as the antagonist rather than delivering the sentimental hometown victory many fans might have expected for Orton.

Lyra Valkyria defeated Becky Lynch to retain the Women’s Intercontinental Championship
This match centered on a breakdown between champion Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch, who had previously been positioned as a friend and mentor to Valkyria. The contest was an important test for the relatively new Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Lynch’s victory could have added immediate star power to the title, while Valkyria’s retention would give the championship a defining win over an established main-event name.

WWE’s pre-event forecast ultimately favored Valkyria, although it described the match as difficult to call. That prediction proved correct. Valkyria retained by roll-up. Lynch then attacked Valkyria after the bell and had to be separated from her by officials, leaving the rivalry unresolved despite the title remaining with Valkyria.
The finish protected the champion while giving Lynch a clear reason to continue the feud. WWE’s Backlash results report confirms both the roll-up victory and the post-match attack.
Dominik Mysterio defeated Penta to retain the Intercontinental Championship
Dominik Mysterio had won the Intercontinental Championship only weeks before Backlash, which was the central reason WWE’s pre-event prediction leaned toward another Mysterio retention. Penta represented a major threat, and possible interference from AJ Styles, Finn Bálor, or other rivals added uncertainty to the matchup, but a very short title reign for Dominik would have been the less likely booking choice.
Dominik did retain. El Grande Americano attacked Penta with a steel-plated mask, allowing Mysterio to capitalize with a Frog Splash and score the victory. The interference gave Penta a protected loss while extending the surrounding storyline. The complete finish is outlined in WWE’s official event recap.
Jacob Fatu defeated LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre to retain the United States Championship
The United States Championship was defended in a Fatal 4-Way featuring champion Jacob Fatu, LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre. The stipulation made outside involvement especially dangerous because a competitor did not need to be the person pinned to lose the championship. WWE’s pre-event prediction selected Fatu, who had won the title only recently.

The outcome protected Fatu’s reign while immediately attaching major intrigue to Cobb’s arrival and Sikoa’s continued involvement. It also kept the other three challengers from taking the loss directly. WWE’s official results page details the interference and finish.
Gunther defeated Pat McAfee by submission
Gunther was the clear pre-event favorite against Pat McAfee. McAfee had already shown that his athletic background and previous WWE performances could make him competitive, but the stylistic and experience gap favored Gunther: a methodical, physically punishing wrestler against a crossover athlete returning for a high-profile match.
Gunther won by submission with a Sleeper. Michael Cole became involved while trying to protect McAfee, and Gunther showed McAfee respect after the match. The result followed the most straightforward prediction on the card without requiring a title change or outside interference.

Original live broadcast
In the United States, WWE and Peacock promoted Backlash 2025 as streaming live on Peacock on Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Peacock’s original May 9, 2025 preview described the event as WWE’s first Premium Live Event after WrestleMania and connected the card to WrestleMania 41 and the subsequent weekly storylines. That page is historical confirmation of the original U.S. broadcast promotion; it may redirect or display differently depending on location.
For international viewers, WWE’s pre-event information said the show was available on Netflix where available. WWE’s event page also points viewers toward territory-specific services and platforms including WWE Network, Netflix, Sony LIV, and Flow. Those references do not prove that every service currently carries the Backlash 2025 replay in every country.

Finding the replay now
Because Backlash 2025 is no longer a live event, the correct way to find it is to search the current catalog of the WWE service available in your country. Start with WWE’s official Backlash event page, then check the relevant local platform. Replay rights, regional catalogs, and WWE distribution arrangements can change, so do not assume that Peacock, Netflix, WWE Network, Sony LIV, or Flow still offers the event in your market merely because it was listed for the original broadcast.

- Other international viewers: Check the WWE event page and the local rights-holder named for your region, such as WWE Network, Sony LIV, or Flow where applicable.
Why the event mattered
Backlash 2025 functioned as the first major checkpoint after WrestleMania 41. The card mixed long-running star power with title defenses designed to establish newer champions. Cena-Orton supplied the farewell-tour headline, while Valkyria, Dominik Mysterio, and Fatu entered with recently won championships that WWE chose to keep in place.
The finishes generally followed that direction. Cena’s controversial retention kept his title story active; Valkyria gained another significant defense but left room for Lynch to continue the feud; Dominik benefited from outside help against Penta; and Fatu retained while the match introduced Jeff Cobb as a major new variable. Gunther’s submission win over McAfee was the cleanest confirmation of an expected competitive hierarchy.
