David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) and Blue Velvet (1986) are currently listed in Tubi’s U.S. catalog, giving viewers a free, ad-supported way to watch two of the director’s most disturbing films. No subscription fee is required, although availability can change when licensing agreements expire.
These are not interchangeable kinds of weird. Eraserhead is an abrasive black-and-white nightmare about parenthood, bodily vulnerability, and industrial alienation. Eraserhead: Lynch’s industrial nightmare about parenthood
Lynch’s first feature-length film is a black-and-white surrealist work built less like a conventional narrative than a sustained anxiety attack. Henry Spencer lives in an oppressive industrial environment, becomes entangled with his angry girlfriend, Mary X, and struggles to care for their newborn child, whose cries and physical appearance become central sources of dread.
The film’s horror is not limited to the child’s grotesque design. Eraserhead turns ordinary responsibilities—relationships, sex, domestic life, and parenthood—into experiences of helplessness and contamination. Machinery, smoke, cramped rooms, ruined landscapes, and unexplained bodily imagery make Henry’s world feel hostile to human life.
Its sound design is equally important. Industrial noise, mechanical hums, sudden disturbances, and the baby’s relentless crying create a nearly physical sense of pressure. Even when the image offers no clear explanation, the soundtrack keeps the viewer trapped inside Henry’s unease.
That ambiguity is part of the point. Eraserhead does not provide a tidy mythology explaining every image. Its dream logic allows parental fear, sexual anxiety, economic insecurity, and bodily horror to overlap. The result is Lynch at his most overtly nightmarish and physically grotesque.

Who should start with Eraserhead?
Choose Eraserhead first if you want Lynch’s most uncompromising surrealism, or if you are more interested in atmosphere and disturbing imagery than in solving a conventional mystery. It is short, but it is not casual background viewing. Birth and body-horror imagery, intense crying, domestic distress, and sustained psychological discomfort make it a poor choice for viewers looking for a light introduction to Lynch.
Blue Velvet: the nightmare beneath suburbia
Blue Velvet begins with the shape of a mystery. College student Jeffrey Beaumont discovers a severed human ear in a field and starts investigating with Sandy Williams. Their search leads them to Dorothy Vallens, a nightclub singer, and Frank Booth, a violent criminal whose presence transforms the investigation into something far more dangerous.
The film’s central tension comes from its collision of surfaces. The town initially looks picturesque, orderly, and familiar. Lynch then places that imagery beside sexual violence, coercive abuse, voyeurism, obsession, and sadism. Jeffrey’s curiosity becomes entangled with the world he is trying to observe, and the film repeatedly asks whether looking at violence is itself a form of participation.
Compared with Eraserhead, Blue Velvet is easier to follow as a story. It has recognizable investigative beats, a young protagonist, a developing relationship, and a defined criminal threat. But that accessibility makes its descent into menace especially disorienting. The film does not abandon reality in the same way as Eraserhead; instead, it suggests that brutality can exist directly underneath respectable suburban life.

Its disturbing power comes from more than Frank Booth’s volatility. The film examines power, desire, humiliation, voyeurism, and the danger of treating another person’s suffering as an invitation into a forbidden world.
