There is an important distinction, however: most commercial services do not give you an unrestricted MP4 file. Their downloads are usually temporary, encrypted copies that play inside the provider’s official app. If you mean downloadable video files that can be transferred, archived, or played anywhere, authorized purchases and genuinely public-domain sources are more relevant than subscription downloads.
This guide is U.S.-oriented. Catalogs, prices, licensing, download rights, supported devices, and rental periods can change by country, title, and date, so check the provider’s title page and current help documentation before paying.
What does “movie download site” mean?
People use the phrase movie download sites to describe two very different things:

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Legal offline viewing: a subscription, rental, or purchase service lets you save a title for playback in its official app.
- A downloadable video file: a website provides a file that can be copied, stored, and played independently of that service.
Netflix, Prime Video, and most other subscription platforms primarily offer the first type. Their downloads are controlled by the account, app, device, region, and licensing agreement. They are not equivalent to owning a portable, unrestricted video file.
| What you want | Best starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Watch a subscribed movie without Wi-Fi | Prime Video or Netflix | Download inside the supported app; title eligibility varies. |
| Rent or buy one specific movie | Apple TV or Google TV | Individual-title payment, with different rules for purchases and rentals. |
| Find the cheapest legitimate source | JustWatch | A search and comparison service that redirects you to the provider; it does not supply the file. |
| Watch free historical or public-domain films | Library of Congress collections | Selected archival films; item-level viewing, download, and rights information must be checked. |
| Keep a normal video file outside an app | Authorized purchase or verified public-domain source | Commercial subscription downloads generally do not meet this requirement. |
Best legal movie download services
1. Amazon Prime Video — best broad subscription, rental, and purchase option
Amazon Prime Video offline downloads are a strong choice for people who already use Amazon Prime or Prime Video and want one catalog that combines subscription titles, rentals, purchases, and add-on channels.
On supported devices, open the movie’s detail page in the Prime Video app and choose the download option. Prime Video supports downloads through its Fire tablet application and its apps for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10/11. Television seasons and individual episodes can also be downloaded where eligible.
- Best for: viewers who want several ways to access films without moving between multiple services.
- Check before downloading: eligibility varies by title, licensing arrangement, device, and region.
- Important limitation: the download is intended for playback in supported applications, not as a freely transferable video file.
- Casting limitation: Amazon states that downloaded content cannot be cast through Chromecast or AirPlay. Plan to watch on the device where the download was saved.
Prime Video is therefore a good all-purpose option, but not a promise that every film in the catalog can be downloaded or retained permanently. A title may stream on one device while lacking a download option on another.
2. Netflix — best for simple subscription offline viewing
Netflix offline downloads are designed for temporary viewing on phones, tablets, and certain compatible computers. Netflix supports downloads for some movies and shows through supported Android devices, iPhone, iPad, compatible Chromebooks, and Fire tablets.
Netflix’s app normally shows a download control on an eligible title’s information page. If the control is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a technical problem: some titles cannot be downloaded because of rights restrictions, licensing arrangements, regional availability, popularity, cost, seasonal factors, or other localized considerations.
- Best for: subscribers who want the simplest way to prepare a phone or tablet for a flight, commute, or location without reliable internet.
- Windows warning: Netflix’s help documentation says the Windows app does not provide the download feature. Do not assume that a Windows subscription supports offline downloads just because streaming works there.
- App-controlled access: downloaded titles are managed by Netflix and are not permanent, freely transferable files.
Netflix also has an optional Downloads for You feature. On supported Android and Apple mobile devices, it can automatically download recommended content. Netflix says this feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans. Automatic downloads can be convenient, but manual downloads are better when you need a particular movie for a trip.

3. Apple TV — best for buying or renting individual movies
Apple TV movie downloads cover two separate use cases: downloads from an Apple TV subscription or Apple TV channel, and downloads of movies or shows purchased through Apple.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSubscription and channel downloads are available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and PC where supported. Apple says downloads from most channels may be available for up to 30 days, although some channels impose shorter limits. That makes a subscription download useful for a planned viewing window, but it should not be confused with a permanent purchase.
Purchased movies and shows have different treatment. Apple provides redownload instructions for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows PC, and states that purchased digital media can be permanently downloaded on those devices. Apple TV hardware, smart televisions, and other streaming devices are streaming-only for this particular download purpose.
- Best for: viewers who prefer to pay for one movie rather than maintain another monthly subscription, especially those already using Apple devices.
- Before paying: confirm whether the transaction is a rental, a subscription-channel title, or a purchase.
- Device caveat: the Apple TV app on a computer or mobile device is not the same as an Apple TV box, smart-TV app, or other streaming hardware.
Buying is generally the closer match to “keep a movie,” but it still means keeping access through Apple’s supported ecosystem and account rather than receiving a universal video file.
4. Google TV — best cross-platform rental and purchase download option
Google TV movie downloads let users save movies and shows from their library to supported phones and tablets for offline playback.
Google distinguishes clearly between purchased and rented videos:
- Purchased videos: can be downloaded on up to five devices.
- Rented videos: can be downloaded to one device.
- Google TV devices: televisions and streaming devices do not support downloading videos for offline playback.
Google TV is a useful choice when you want to rent a film for a trip or buy a specific title without subscribing to a broad catalog. Check country, title, device, and rental-period restrictions before completing the transaction. A rental download remains subject to the rental window; it is not converted into a permanent purchase merely because it is stored on a tablet.

5. JustWatch — best for finding where a movie is legally available
Find where to watch a movie with JustWatch before signing up for a service or paying for a rental. JustWatch is not itself a movie download provider. It is a discovery and comparison service that shows legal offers from subscription, ad-supported, rental, and purchase providers.
On the U.S. movie site, you can search for a title and filter results by services, price, free options, rentals, purchases, and subscriptions. Availability and pricing come from the listed providers and can change, but JustWatch can prevent an unnecessary subscription when a one-time rental is cheaper.
A practical JustWatch workflow
- Search for the exact movie title, checking the release year when several films have similar names.
- Review every legal category: free with ads, subscription, rental, and purchase.
- Compare the total value, not just the headline price. A subscription may be worthwhile if you will watch several titles; a rental may be better for one film.
- Open the provider’s listing and verify that the title is available in your country.
- Check the provider’s own app or title page for a download control before paying.
JustWatch solves the “where is this movie?” problem, not the “give me a portable video file” problem. It redirects you to the service that controls the title.
6. Library of Congress National Screening Room — best free source for selected historical films
The Library of Congress National Screening Room offers more than 550 films for viewing, including archival and historically significant material. It also separately identifies films that are in the public domain and free to use and reuse. This makes the collection particularly useful for historical, educational, and documentary viewing rather than current commercial releases.
Start with the Library’s free public-domain movies and related National Screening Room information, then inspect the individual item page. Do not assume that every film in the collection is downloadable, public domain, or cleared for every possible use.
The Library cautions that rights assessment remains the user’s responsibility. Copyright, privacy, publicity, licensing, and trademark restrictions may apply even when material is freely viewable online. “Free to watch” and “free to reuse” are different conclusions, and “download available” is a separate technical question.

Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | Recommended path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already subscribe and want offline viewing | Prime Video or Netflix | Both provide app-based downloads for eligible titles, with broad differences in catalog and device support. |
| You want one movie, not another subscription | Apple TV or Google TV | Both support authorized individual purchases or rentals, with mobile and computer download options subject to their rules. |
| You need the lowest legitimate price | JustWatch, followed by the listed provider | It compares free, subscription, rental, and purchase options for a particular title. |
| You want a free historical or archival film | Library of Congress collections | It offers selected films and identifies some public-domain material, but rights and download status must be checked item by item. |
| You need an unrestricted file for editing or long-term archiving | Verified public-domain material or a provider that explicitly grants file access and reuse rights | Most subscription downloads are app-controlled and cannot be exported. |
How to download a movie legally
- Identify the title and your country. Search JustWatch or the provider’s catalog. Rights are territorial, so a result seen by a U.S. user may not appear elsewhere.
- Choose the access model. Decide whether you need a subscription download, a rental, a purchase, or a genuinely public-domain file.
- Confirm device support. Look for the provider’s official app on the device you will carry. Streaming support on a television does not automatically mean download support there.
- Check the title page. A download icon or button should appear when the specific title is eligible. If it is absent, do not assume that a third-party site can legally supply the same film.
- Download while connected. Use Wi-Fi where possible and leave enough storage space. Download the full movie, not merely a trailer or preview.
- Test before leaving home. Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi or use airplane mode and start playback. This confirms that the download is present and that the app recognizes the account and license.
- Keep the app and account available. App-controlled downloads may require the appropriate account, supported software, and occasional license checks. Rentals, subscription access, and channel downloads can expire.
- Do not expect unrestricted exporting. A download that plays in an official app may not appear as a usable MP4 in the device’s file manager and may not cast to every television.
Subscription downloads versus rentals and purchases
The word download hides an important ownership difference.

| Access type | Payment | Offline behavior | Long-term expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription download | Recurring membership | Available only for eligible titles in the service’s app | Can disappear when the license, catalog availability, subscription, or download period changes. |
| Rental download | One-time rental fee | Usually tied to a rental window and often a device limit | Not permanent ownership; Google, for example, limits a rented download to one device. |
| Purchased digital movie | One-time purchase | May be redownloadable through the provider on supported devices | More durable than a rental, but still tied to the provider, account, terms, and supported ecosystem. |
| Public-domain or explicitly licensed file | Often free | May be downloadable and usable outside a streaming app | Rights depend on the specific work, edition, restoration, soundtrack, and stated license. |
Apple’s documentation illustrates the distinction: most Apple TV channel downloads may last up to 30 days, while purchased media can be permanently downloaded on supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows PC devices. Google likewise separates purchased downloads on up to five devices from rented downloads on one device. These are provider-specific rules, not a universal definition of digital ownership.
How to tell whether a movie download site is legitimate
A site’s use of words such as free, HD, no registration, or direct download does not prove that its files are authorized. Before downloading, apply this test:
- Identifiable rights or business model: the provider explains whether it licenses the movie, sells access, operates a subscription catalog, or offers public-domain material.
- Recognized service or transparent operator: there is a real company, institution, retailer, or archive behind the catalog.
- Official catalog and application: the service provides a normal title page and, where applicable, an app distributed through an established app store.
- Clear terms: the site explains rental periods, device limits, download rules, regional restrictions, and reuse rights.
- Normal payment and account flow: legitimate services do not need deceptive pop-ups, forced browser extensions, suspicious executable files, or repeated redirects.
- Item-level rights information: especially for archival collections, the individual film page should identify copyright or reuse conditions.
The U.S. Copyright Office explains that uploading or downloading copyrighted works without the copyright owner’s authority can infringe reproduction or distribution rights. It also points consumers toward authorized online services and notes risks such as malware or spyware associated with unauthorized sources. Read the Copyright Office guidance if you are unsure whether a source has permission.
For that reason, this list does not include torrent indexes, unauthorized streaming mirrors, cyberlockers, or domains that distribute copyrighted films without permission. Leaving those sources out is not a limitation of the comparison; it is the difference between a legal offline-viewing guide and a piracy directory.

There is no download button
The most likely explanations are that the title is not licensed for download, your device or operating system is unsupported, the title is unavailable for download in your region, or you are using a television or streaming-device app rather than a mobile or computer app. Netflix specifically says that not every title can be downloaded, and its Windows app does not offer the download feature.
The movie streams but will not download
Streaming rights and download rights are separate. A provider may be allowed to stream a film while lacking permission to offer an offline copy. Check the title page rather than relying on whether playback works online.
The download disappeared or will not play
Check whether the rental, subscription, channel entitlement, or download period ended. Also verify that you are signed into the same account, using the supported app, and connected when the service requests a license check. Expiration rules cannot be bypassed by copying the app’s stored data.

The downloaded movie will not play on my TV
App downloads are often tied to the device that received them. Prime Video states that downloaded content cannot be cast through Chromecast or AirPlay. Google TV devices do not support downloading videos for offline playback, and Apple says Apple TV hardware and smart televisions are streaming-only for downloading purchased media. Download to a supported phone, tablet, Mac, or PC instead.
I need the film as a file for editing or classroom use
Do not treat the ability to watch offline as permission to extract, edit, redistribute, or publicly screen a movie. Look for an explicit public-domain designation or license covering your intended use. For Library of Congress material, review the individual item’s rights information and consider copyright, privacy, publicity, licensing, and trademark issues separately.
A note for documentary viewers
Documentaries can be especially difficult to locate because availability may depend on territory, festival or educational rights, and the difference between a subscription catalog and a one-time rental. Search the exact title in JustWatch first, then verify the offer on the provider’s own page. If you are looking for older nonfiction, government, educational, or archival footage, the Library of Congress is a more appropriate place to investigate than a generic “free movie download” website.
For a documentary you plan to show publicly, use the rights information for the specific film—not merely the fact that it is available to stream or download. Offline playback permission and public-screening permission are not the same thing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a movie from Netflix or Prime Video as an MP4?
Usually not. Their offline downloads are managed by the official app and are not unrestricted video files that can be freely copied, transferred, or archived. Download eligibility and expiration are controlled by the service and the title’s license.
What is the best site for finding a specific movie legally?
Use JustWatch to search the title and compare subscription, ad-supported, rental, purchase, and free offers. JustWatch does not host the movie; it directs you to the provider offering it in your country.
Is buying a digital movie the same as owning a physical file?
No. A purchase is generally more durable than a rental or subscription download, but access remains tied to the retailer’s account, app, supported devices, and terms. Apple supports permanent redownloads of purchased media on certain devices, while streaming hardware is not supported for that download purpose.
Why can I stream a movie but not download it?
Streaming and offline rights are negotiated separately. A title may be licensed for online playback but not for downloads, or downloads may be restricted by device, country, season, or provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Are free movie download sites legal?
Some are, especially public-domain archives and institutions with explicit rights information. But labels such as “free,” “HD,” or “no registration” do not establish authorization. Check the operator, licensing or public-domain statement, official catalog, and item-level rights information before downloading.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For legal offline viewing, start with Prime Video or Netflix if you already subscribe. For one-off rentals or purchases, compare Apple TV and Google TV. Use JustWatch to locate the best legitimate offer, and use Library of Congress collections for selected historical and public-domain films. If you need a portable video file rather than an app-managed download, verify an explicit license or public-domain status—do not rely on an unfamiliar “free movie download” domain.
