Black bars on Amazon Prime Video are often normal. They usually mean the film’s original shape does not match your television’s screen. The problem is more likely a setting that needs fixing when faces look stretched, the image is zoomed in, subtitles or edges are cut off, or Prime Video menus are cropped.
The fastest way to identify the cause is to compare several titles, check whether the Prime Video interface is also affected, and test another app or input. If every title has the same geometry problem, start with the TV or external playback device—not with the film itself.
First, decide whether the picture is actually wrong
A modern television is usually 16:9, but video is produced in several different shapes. A wide theatrical film may use 2.35:1, 2.39:1, or 2.40:1. Older television programs and films may use 4:3. Prime Video’s delivery specifications also recognize formats including 4:3, 1.66:1, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2:1, 2.20:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1, and 2.40:1.
When the source and screen have different proportions, the television has three choices:

- Preserve the entire frame: show black bars.
- Crop the frame: fill more of the screen but lose part of the image.
- Stretch the frame: fill the screen while distorting faces and objects.
For a widescreen movie on a 16:9 TV, black bars above and below—called letterboxing—are normally the correct result. A 4:3 source may have bars on the left and right, known as pillarboxing. Removing those bars can cut off picture information or make the image look unnaturally wide.
The quickest diagnosis: one title or every title?
- Play two or three different titles. Include a modern film, an older program, and—if possible—another Prime Video original or series.
- Look at the menus and subtitles. If the Prime Video logo, menus, subtitles, or picture edges are also cut off, the issue is probably a TV zoom or overscan setting.
- Try another app or input. Check YouTube, a game console, a disc player, or the television’s home screen. If they have the same problem, the TV or connected source is the likely cause.
- Identify how Prime Video is playing. The settings differ depending on whether you use the TV’s built-in app, a Fire TV, Roku, Google TV device, game console, computer browser, or another HDMI-connected player.

Fix the TV’s picture-size setting
Open the television’s picture or display menu while Prime Video is visible. Depending on the brand, look under Picture, Display, Screen, or Picture Size. The neutral setting may be called:
- Original
- 16:9
- Auto
- Fit to Screen
- Screen Fit
- Just Scan
- Full Pixel
- Set by Program
Choose the option that displays the complete signal without enlarging, stretching, or cutting it. Exact labels and availability vary by model, input, resolution, and software version. A setting used by the TV’s built-in apps may not be the same setting used by an HDMI input.
Samsung televisions
On many Samsung models, the relevant path is Settings > All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Picture Size Settings. Depending on the model, options can include 16:9 Standard, Custom, 4:3, Fit to Screen, and Zoom and Position.

LG televisions
LG models commonly offer choices such as 16:9, Original, Full Wide, 4:3, and various zoom modes. Just Scan, when available for the signal, is intended to show the complete image rather than crop its edges.

If a film looks stretched, try Original or 16:9 instead of Full Wide. If the edges or subtitles disappear, look for Just Scan or the equivalent full-signal option.
Sony televisions
Sony commonly places these controls under the screen or picture settings. For an applicable HDMI signal, Sony’s guidance includes using Wide Mode: Full and Display Area: Full Pixel. For a widescreen connected device, the source should generally also be configured for 16:9 where possible.
Sony menu names vary substantially by model and signal type. If an option is missing, check the manual for that exact television and HDMI input.
Turn off Zoom, Stretch, and Overscan
During troubleshooting, avoid modes named Zoom, Pan Scan, Cinema Zoom, Wide Zoom, Stretch, or a manually enlarged Custom mode. These settings can make a movie fill more of the screen, but they do so by cropping, distorting, or enlarging the original picture.
Overscan is another common cause of missing edges. It enlarges the incoming image slightly so that its outermost pixels extend beyond the visible screen. It was useful with some older broadcast signals, but it is undesirable when it cuts off Prime Video menus, subtitles, or picture details. Look for Fit to Screen, Just Scan, Full Pixel, Screen Fit, or a similar setting.
If you watch Prime Video through another device
When Prime Video runs through a streaming stick, set-top box, game console, computer, or other HDMI source, both the source and the television can affect the displayed image.

Streaming players and consoles
Open the external device’s display settings and check its resolution, screen-size, overscan, and aspect-ratio options. Then check the picture-size setting for the TV input currently being used. The TV may store separate settings for HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and built-in apps.
Prime Video features and controls can vary by device and configuration. A setting that is available in the television’s native app may not be available on a particular external player, and vice versa.
Windows computers and browsers
If the problem appears only when watching in a browser, check whether the browser is genuinely in full-screen mode and whether the computer’s display resolution or scaling is unusual. Confirm that the computer is sending a standard widescreen resolution to the TV, then check the TV’s HDMI picture-size mode.
A Windows driver utility is not a normal solution for a stable Prime Video picture that is merely letterboxed. Driver troubleshooting becomes relevant only if the computer also has broader display symptoms—such as incorrect resolutions, flickering, dropouts, or problems across multiple applications.

If the picture remains abnormal after checking the display settings, apply Amazon’s general playback troubleshooting steps:
- Close the Prime Video app or browser completely.
- Power off the television, computer, console, or connected streaming device.
- Disconnect power if the device does not fully shut down, wait at least 60 seconds, and start it again.
- Install available updates for the Prime Video app, device operating system, television firmware, or browser.
- If playback also buffers, freezes, or loses quality, restart the router and modem and check the internet connection.
These steps can clear an app or device state, but they will not necessarily change a TV-level aspect-ratio setting. If every app is zoomed or stretched, return to the display settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling Prime Video.

Check the HDMI cable only for broader signal problems
An HDMI cable normally does not change the creative aspect ratio of a stable video stream. Replacing it is therefore not the first answer to normal black bars or a single title’s wide presentation.
Inspect the HDMI connection when the issue occurs only on an external source and is accompanied by signal dropouts, flicker, “no signal” messages, intermittent resolution changes, sparkles, or a picture that repeatedly disappears. Reseat the cable, test another HDMI port, confirm the source resolution, and replace the cable if necessary.

If you do need one for an unstable 4K setup, choose a properly rated high-speed HDMI cable and treat it as a signal-integrity fix—not as a way to remove intentional letterboxing.

The original remote is often needed to open Picture Size, Zoom, Screen Fit, or Display Area settings. If it is missing or broken, a universal TV remote can be a practical access tool, provided it supports your television model and exposes the required menu functions. It does not correct the video by itself.
For a lost or damaged original, a replacement remote for your TV matched to the exact brand and model is usually safer than assuming any universal remote will provide every picture-control function. Verify compatibility before buying; “universal” does not mean every button works with every television.
Should you buy a different streaming device?
Usually not for black bars. A new player will not make a correctly presented theatrical film fill a 16:9 screen without cropping or distortion.
Changing hardware may be reasonable only when your current device is unsupported, unstable, no longer updated, or unable to expose the display controls you need. In that limited situation, a Fire TV streaming stick or another supported streaming player may provide a different Prime Video app and display-settings path. Check device and television compatibility first, and treat it as a replacement or compatibility decision—not as a universal aspect-ratio cure.
When to contact Prime Video or the TV manufacturer
Contact Prime Video support when:
- Only one title has a clearly abnormal frame while other titles and apps display correctly.
- The title is cropped or stretched in the same way across multiple compatible devices.
- Restarting, updating, and checking the display settings do not resolve a title-specific presentation problem.
Contact the television or playback-device manufacturer when:
- Menus and multiple apps are cropped or stretched.
- The picture-size control is missing, greyed out, or behaves differently from the manual.
- The issue affects only one HDMI input or is accompanied by flicker, dropouts, or resolution changes.
Before contacting support, record the TV model, playback device, HDMI input, title and episode, whether the problem affects menus and subtitles, and which picture-size settings you tested. That information helps separate a title issue from a display or device issue.

How do I change the aspect ratio on Prime Video?
There is no documented universal aspect-ratio button in Prime Video that works across every TV, browser, and streaming device. Use the television’s or external player’s Picture Size, Display Area, Zoom, Screen Fit, Original, Auto, Just Scan, or Full Pixel settings.
Why are Prime Video subtitles or edges cut off?
The TV or playback device is likely using Zoom, overscan, Cinema Zoom, or another enlarged picture mode. Disable that mode and choose Fit to Screen, Just Scan, Full Pixel, Original, or the equivalent full-image setting.
Why does only one Prime Video movie look stretched or cropped?
