Do you need an Apple TV device?
No. “Apple TV” can refer to both Apple’s streaming service and its Apple TV 4K hardware box, but the hardware is optional. If you already have a compatible television, streaming device, game console, computer, phone, tablet, or browser, you may be able to watch without buying an Apple TV box.
Apple lists support for many devices and platforms, including Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, TCL, Hisense, Panasonic, and Philips smart TVs; Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices; Chromecast and Android TV devices; Nvidia Shield TV; PlayStation and Xbox consoles; cable and satellite boxes; web browsers; and Android phones and tablets. Exact compatibility and available features can vary by country or region. See Apple’s Apple TV app device-support guidance for the current details.
Can you watch on an older Apple TV box?
Check the model before assuming the app will work. Apple’s current tvOS-supported model information includes Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models, while older Apple TV hardware may no longer receive the software support needed for newer apps. You can identify the model using Apple’s Apple TV model guide.
