Simone Biles and MyKayla Skinner’s Drama Explained: the dispute began when Skinner criticized the 2024 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team’s talent, depth, work ethic, and coaching environment. Skinner later apologized, but the controversy intensified after the team won Paris Olympic gold and Biles posted “lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions.”
The episode is best understood as a public social-media dispute and backlash cycle between former Olympic teammates, not as a fully documented permanent feud. The public record shows what Skinner said, her apology, Biles’s response, the team’s victory, and subsequent social-media reactions; it does not establish the women’s complete private relationship.
Key takeaways
- MyKayla Skinner criticized the 2024 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team’s talent, depth, work ethic, and coaching environment in a video that was later deleted.

What happened between Simone Biles and MyKayla Skinner?
The dispute began after former U.S. gymnast MyKayla Skinner criticized the team selected for the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a now-deleted YouTube video, Skinner said the team, apart from Simone Biles, lacked the talent and depth of earlier U.S. teams. Skinner also questioned the athletes’ work ethic and discussed how SafeSport rules had changed coach-athlete communication. Contemporaneous reporting by Axios documented the remarks and the backlash.
Skinner later apologized, writing, “It was not my intention to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or to take away from their hard work.” The apology did not end the story because Biles responded publicly, and the controversy grew after the 2024 team won Olympic gold.

What did MyKayla Skinner say about the Olympic gymnastics team?
Skinner made three connected criticisms. First, she questioned the team’s overall talent and depth, saying, “Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t what it used to be.” Second, she criticized the athletes’ effort, saying, “The girls just don’t have the work ethic.” Third, she argued that SafeSport had made coaches more cautious about what they said, while suggesting that reaching the highest level could require an intense or aggressive coaching approach.
Those remarks should be separated from the larger claim that SafeSport caused a decline in U.S. gymnastics. The available sources establish what Skinner said; they do not establish that SafeSport produced a measurable performance decline. Skinner’s video was deleted, so the wording should be treated as reported remarks rather than as a directly available primary recording.
| Issue | Skinner’s position | What the record shows | What cannot be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talent and depth | She said the team, except for Biles, did not match earlier U.S. teams. | The criticized team won the Olympic team final. | One victory cannot settle every comparison with previous teams. |
| Work ethic | She said the athletes did not work as hard as gymnasts in the past. | The statement triggered backlash and a later apology. | Public results do not prove every athlete’s private training habits. |
| Coaching | She said SafeSport made coaches more careful and implied that intense coaching could be necessary. | The comments concerned the coaching environment as well as the athletes. | The sources do not prove that SafeSport caused weaker U.S. performances. |
| Personal relationship | Skinner’s comments became part of a public dispute with Biles. | Reporting documented social-media unfollows and blocking-related developments. | The public record does not prove permanent estrangement or reveal all private feelings. |
Why did Simone Biles say “lack of talent, lazy, Olympic champions”?
After the U.S. women won the Paris Olympic team final on July 30, 2024, Biles posted the phrase “lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions.” Readers and reporters widely interpreted the caption as a pointed callback to Skinner’s earlier comments. The wording connected Skinner’s criticism directly to the team’s result without providing a complete account of Biles’s private feelings.
The timing mattered. The official USA Gymnastics team-final results list the United States first with 171.296 points, ahead of Italy and Brazil. The U.S. lineup was Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, and Hezly Rivera.

The result was a strong rhetorical counterpoint to Skinner’s prediction: the athletes described as lacking talent or work ethic had won the sport’s most important team prize. The victory does not, by itself, prove that every criticism of the team was objectively wrong, but it explains why Biles’s caption resonated as a rebuttal.
How successful was Simone Biles at the 2024 Paris Olympics?
Simone Biles won team gold, all-around gold, and vault gold, plus floor-exercise silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The official USA Gymnastics results book records four Olympic medals for Biles in Paris: three gold medals and one silver medal.
USA Gymnastics’s athlete profile, accessed August 16, 2026, lists Biles with 30 World medals, including 23 gold, and identifies her 2024 Olympic results as first in team, all-around, and vault and second in floor exercise. Those accomplishments provide broader context for why her response carried unusual public weight, but they do not turn a social-media caption into a full statement about the relationship.
For readers who want more background on Biles’s early life and rise through elite gymnastics, Courage to Soar provides that broader context through Biles’s official autobiography. The book predates the 2024 Skinner controversy, so it should not be treated as an explanation of the dispute.

The earlier connection gave the 2024 dispute additional context. Skinner was speaking as a former Olympian and medalist with experience inside the U.S. program, while Biles was an active leader of the Paris team. That history made the disagreement more personal to viewers than a dispute between unrelated commentators.
Did MyKayla Skinner apologize to Simone Biles?
MyKayla Skinner apologized publicly after backlash over her comments, but the available record does not establish that the apology produced a private reconciliation with Simone Biles. Skinner said, “It was not my intention to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or to take away from their hard work.”
Biles had already posted, “Not everyone needs a mic and a platform,” according to contemporaneous timeline reporting. The apology, Biles’s posts, the Olympic victory, and subsequent social-media activity formed a backlash cycle rather than a clearly documented private resolution.
Did Simone Biles and MyKayla Skinner stop following each other?
Reporting in late July and early August 2024 documented unfollowing, blocking-related developments, and public reactions involving Biles, Skinner, and other Team USA gymnasts. ABC News Australia’s explainer described the social-media developments, while other reporting noted that Biles and most of the other Team USA gymnasts had unfollowed Skinner.
