Qobuz and TIDAL are the strongest choices if high-resolution audio is the main reason you are switching services. Qobuz has the clearest specialist-audiophile focus and a separate hi-res download store, while TIDAL combines HiRes FLAC with a broad mainstream catalog and Dolby Atmos. Apple Music is the better-value choice for most Apple users, Amazon Music Unlimited is especially compelling for Prime members, and Spotify remains the discovery and playlist leader even though its lossless ceiling is lower. Deezer is a credible CD-quality lossless alternative, but the current evidence does not establish it as a 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz streaming leader.

One important qualification: the available evidence documents published capabilities, prices, catalogs, and device limitations rather than firsthand listening tests, blind comparisons, latency measurements, or verified output measurements. The rankings below are therefore capability-based. A service advertising 24-bit/192 kHz does not deliver that resolution for every recording, device, or connection.

Quick verdict

Service Highest published streaming capability Best for Main limitation
Qobuz Lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz Dedicated hi-res listeners, classical and jazz exploration, and permanent music ownership Quality depends on the supplied recording and compatible playback endpoint; casting can reduce the ceiling
TIDAL HiRes FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz in Max quality An all-around audiophile service with HiRes FLAC and Dolby Atmos Partner-device support varies, and the advertised maximum is not available for every album
Apple Music ALAC from 16-bit/44.1 kHz up to 24-bit/192 kHz for most of the catalog Apple households and mainstream value An external DAC is needed for iPhone and iPad playback above 48 kHz; Bluetooth is not a lossless path
Amazon Music Unlimited HD at 16-bit/44.1 kHz or higher; Ultra HD up to 24-bit/192 kHz Prime members, Alexa users, and listeners who want a large mainstream catalog with hi-res options Actual quality follows the recording, network, device, and settings; wireless listening can compress the signal
Spotify Premium Lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz for eligible listeners and supported hardware Discovery, playlists, social features, and Spotify Connect It does not reach the 96 kHz or 192 kHz ceiling offered by the leading hi-res competitors
Deezer FLAC at CD quality, 16-bit/44.1 kHz, based on the current documentation reviewed Listeners who want a straightforward lossless alternative A current official 24-bit high-resolution streaming tier was not established

“High-res” and “lossless” are related but not interchangeable terms. CD-quality lossless is normally 16-bit/44.1 kHz. High-resolution streaming is generally above CD quality and may extend to 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz. A 24-bit/44.1 kHz file is lossless and has greater bit depth than CD quality, but it is not the same as a 24-bit/192 kHz stream.

1. Qobuz: best for a serious high-resolution focus

Qobuz is the clearest choice for listeners who want a service built around high-resolution music rather than a general entertainment ecosystem. Qobuz says its catalog exceeds 100 million tracks and includes lossless FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, with a hi-res catalog extending to 24-bit/192 kHz. Its Help Center says that more than 185,000 albums are available in hi-res through Studio and Sublime plans. These are company-reported figures, and the company also warns that the maximum quality depends on what the label has supplied for a particular release. [c001–c003]

The U.S. Studio Solo plan is listed at $12.99 per month, or an annual-billing equivalent of $10.83 per month. Duo, Family, and Student plans are also available. Qobuz separately sells permanent downloads, giving it an ownership angle that subscription-only services do not match. [c004–c005]

Why Qobuz stands out

  • Specialist catalog presentation: album information, credits, editorial material, and hi-res labeling are central to the experience.
  • High ceiling: compatible recordings can reach 24-bit/192 kHz.
  • Ownership option: listeners can buy permanent downloads rather than relying entirely on an active subscription.
  • Qobuz Connect: compatible devices can receive music directly from Qobuz servers at up to 24-bit/192 kHz, rather than depending on a phone as the audio source. [c003]

Qobuz Connect is not the same as every form of casting. In the cited Qobuz support material, AirPlay is limited to CD resolution and Google Cast is limited to 24-bit/96 kHz. That makes the exact endpoint important: a Qobuz subscription can support 24-bit/192 kHz while a particular living-room connection does not. [c003]

Choose Qobuz if: you care about classical, jazz, credits, recording editions, hi-res availability, or buying downloads. It is also the most natural starting point for a dedicated hi-fi system, provided the network player or DAC supports Qobuz Connect.

Do not choose it solely for the number 192: not every album is supplied at 24-bit/192 kHz, and the master, output path, and listening equipment may matter more than the nominal sample rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. TIDAL: best all-around audiophile service

TIDAL’s current support documentation defines Max quality as lossless audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz using HiRes FLAC. Its High setting uses FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz, while Low uses AAC at up to 320 kbps. TIDAL says HiRes FLAC is available directly in its iOS, Android, desktop, and web apps, although support through partner devices varies by product. [c006]

TIDAL’s playback hierarchy matters. Depending on what the artist or rights holder has supplied, the service can fall back from HiRes FLAC to FLAC and then AAC. In other words, selecting Max does not convert every recording into hi-res audio. The selected album must have a HiRes FLAC version, and the app, device, connection, and output chain must all preserve it.

The U.S. Individual plan is listed at $11.99 per month, with Family at $19.99 and Student at $6.99, before applicable sales tax. TIDAL reports more than 180 million tracks across lossless, HiRes FLAC, and Dolby Atmos formats; that catalog figure is a company claim rather than an independently audited count. [c007]

Why TIDAL stands out

  • HiRes FLAC: it uses an open lossless format rather than a lossy codec for its highest tier.
  • Broad service proposition: it combines hi-res music, mainstream releases, playlists, and Dolby Atmos.
  • Wide app availability: HiRes FLAC is supported in the major mobile, desktop, and web applications, with hardware support requiring a product-by-product check.

TIDAL specifically recommends checking the DAC and using wired or Wi-Fi playback for the full HiRes FLAC experience. Bluetooth headphones are convenient, but they generally do not preserve the same lossless digital path. [c006]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose TIDAL if: you want a specialist service without giving up a broad catalog, or if Dolby Atmos is part of your decision. It is a close alternative to Qobuz for high-resolution streaming, but the better choice depends on the recordings you play, the app experience, and the hardware you already own.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

3. Apple Music: best mainstream value for Apple users

Apple Music is the easiest high-resolution recommendation for people already using iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, Apple TV, or other Apple services. Apple says most of its catalog is encoded in ALAC, ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz. Lossless audio and Spatial Audio are included with the Individual plan rather than placed behind a separate hi-res surcharge. [c008–c009]

The U.S. Individual plan is listed at $10.99 per month, with Family at $19.99 and Student at $6.99. Apple’s pages may display limited-time promotional offers, so those trials should not be treated as the normal recurring price. [c009]

The hardware catch

Apple’s device limitations are more important than the catalog headline. iPhone and iPad can play lossless through a wired connection, but Apple says an external DAC is required for sample rates above 48 kHz. Some Macs support higher native sample rates, while other Mac setups may need an external DAC above 48 kHz. Bluetooth connections do not provide lossless playback in the same way as a wired digital path. [c010]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means an Apple Music track labeled 24-bit/192 kHz does not automatically reach your headphones at 24-bit/192 kHz. The phone or computer may be limited to 48 kHz, the wireless connection may use compression, or the system may resample the audio.

Choose Apple Music if: you want the best combination of price, catalog breadth, lossless audio, Spatial Audio, and Apple ecosystem integration. It is the sensible mainstream winner, but not the simplest route to verified 24-bit/192 kHz output from an iPhone or iPad.

4. Amazon Music Unlimited: best for Prime members

Amazon Music Unlimited offers 100 million tracks in lossless HD and millions in Ultra HD, according to Amazon’s FAQ. Amazon defines HD as 16-bit with a minimum sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Ultra HD is 24-bit, with sample rates ranging from 44.1 kHz through 192 kHz. The service chooses playback quality according to the content, network, device capability, and settings. [c011]

The standard U.S. Individual price listed in Amazon’s FAQ is $10.99 per month for Prime members and $11.99 for non-Prime customers. Family and annual options are also listed, while promotional pricing and trials can change. The Prime discount is the reason Amazon Music Unlimited becomes much more competitive for an existing Prime household than for someone subscribing to it alone. [c012–c013]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon’s useful playback information

Amazon provides unusually explicit guidance about the output chain. Most recent iPhones and iPads can reach 24-bit/48 kHz without extra equipment, while an external DAC is needed for higher rates such as 96 or 192 kHz. Amazon’s Mac app can use exclusive mode, which is intended to give the app more direct control over the output device. Wireless headphones generally compress audio, although some advanced Bluetooth implementations support limited higher-quality modes. [c011]

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

Amazon also fits naturally into Alexa and smart-home setups. That convenience can outweigh small differences in catalog presentation for a listener who starts music by voice, uses Echo devices, or wants one subscription integrated with an existing Prime account.

Choose Amazon Music Unlimited if: you are already a Prime member, use Alexa, or want a large general-purpose catalog with HD and Ultra HD labels. Before treating it as a true hi-res setup, check the Ultra HD badge, the track’s stated resolution, the device output information, and whether exclusive mode is enabled where appropriate.

5. Spotify Premium: best for discovery, not maximum resolution

Spotify added lossless playback for Premium in 2025 and documents support up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for eligible listeners using supported hardware. Spotify automatically selects the best available format for the account and setup. Its support material recommends wired playback or compatible Spotify Connect hardware for the best lossless experience because Bluetooth may require compression. [c014–c015]

Spotify’s ceiling is the key distinction: 24-bit/44.1 kHz is above CD bit depth but does not extend to the 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz range offered by Qobuz, TIDAL, Apple Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited. It belongs in this comparison because many listeners value its discovery tools, playlists, social features, recommendation systems, and device ecosystem more than the highest possible sample rate.

What to check before calling Spotify lossless

  • Confirm that your Premium account is eligible in your region.
  • Use a current app version and a supported playback device.
  • Enable the manual lossless setting where it is available instead of assuming the app has selected it.
  • Check the track or playback indicator for lossless status.
  • Use wired playback or a compatible Spotify Connect endpoint when Bluetooth compression would defeat the goal.

Choose Spotify if: discovery and playlists are your priority and CD-quality lossless is sufficient. Choose another service if your definition of high-res specifically requires 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz content.

6. Deezer: a lossless alternative, but not a confirmed hi-res leader

The Deezer documentation located for this comparison supports FLAC HiFi streaming at CD quality, generally 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Deezer community material also describes HiFi in those terms. The current evidence does not establish a current official 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz streaming tier in the United States. [c016–c017]

That does not make Deezer a poor service. CD-quality FLAC is genuinely lossless and may be all many listeners need. It simply should not be presented as a high-resolution finalist without verifying a current official hi-res offering in the target country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Deezer if: you want lossless CD-quality streaming and its catalog, interface, or availability suits you. Do not choose it on the assumption that every HiFi label means 24-bit high-resolution audio.

What you need for genuine hi-res playback

A subscription is only the first part of the chain. The file must be available at the advertised resolution, the app must request it, the operating system must pass it through, and the output device must support it.

  1. A recording available in hi-res. A service’s maximum is not the resolution of every album. Check the specific release rather than relying on the service’s headline.
  2. The correct quality setting. Lossless, High, Max, HD, Ultra HD, and similar labels do not mean the same thing across services. Confirm the selected setting and the track’s format indicator.
  3. A suitable output path. A wired digital connection or a compatible network endpoint is the safest route. Bluetooth generally introduces compression or otherwise does not preserve the same lossless path.
  4. A compatible DAC. Phones and computers may stop at 48 kHz, even when the service supplies 96 or 192 kHz. A USB DAC can be useful when it matches the source connector, operating system, supported sample rates, and amplifier or headphone connection. It is not a guarantee of better sound, and buying a DAC that the device cannot recognize or that the app bypasses solves nothing.
  5. A revealing but practical listening system. Wired headphones or speakers are appropriate for evaluating a lossless path, but expensive headphones are not a prerequisite for using a lossless service. Comfort, fit, amplification, and the recording itself remain important.

For an iPhone or iPad, Apple says an external DAC is needed above 48 kHz. Amazon gives similar guidance for rates such as 96 and 192 kHz. TIDAL also emphasizes DAC capability for the full HiRes FLAC experience. These constraints are why the hardware path should be decided before paying extra for the highest advertised resolution. [c006][c010–c011]

Listeners who want to avoid Bluetooth compression should consider wired headphones for lossless music or a compatible wired connection to an amplifier. The goal is not to buy the most expensive accessory; it is to prevent a wireless or incompatible link from undoing the format choice.

How to verify the resolution you are actually receiving

Do not judge a service by its maximum number alone. Use the following check with the same albums on each platform:

  1. Select a fixed test set: include a mainstream release, a classical recording, a jazz album, an indie release, and an obscure or older recording. This exposes both catalog breadth and format availability.
  2. Open the specific album and record its label: note whether it is shown as lossless, Hi-Res FLAC, Ultra HD, or another service-specific designation, and write down the stated bit depth and sample rate.
  3. Use the same source conditions: compare wired iPhone or Android playback, Mac or Windows playback, and a network endpoint separately. Do not compare a wired Qobuz stream with a Bluetooth Spotify stream and call the service difference a sound-quality result.
  4. Check the output device: use a DAC or network player that reports the incoming sample rate. The app’s label describes the source file; the DAC’s report helps establish what reached the hardware.
  5. Test casting separately: Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, and manufacturer integrations can have different limits. Qobuz’s cited guidance, for example, places AirPlay at CD resolution and Google Cast at 24-bit/96 kHz, while Qobuz Connect can reach 24-bit/192 kHz on compatible devices. [c003]
  6. Record failures: note unavailable albums, fallback formats, unsupported devices, resampling, Bluetooth behavior, and whether downloads remain playable offline.

This procedure also prevents a common mistake: assuming that a “hi-res” badge proves that the entire playback chain is hi-res. A proper comparison should record the highest resolution actually delivered for identical albums, not merely the service’s advertised ceiling.

Catalog, app, and device differences that can change the winner

Catalog availability is title-specific

Rights agreements and label deliveries determine whether a particular album appears in 24-bit/96 kHz, 24-bit/192 kHz, CD-quality lossless, Dolby Atmos, or only a lossy version. Test mainstream, classical, jazz, indie, and obscure recordings. A service that wins on a specification sheet may lose for the music you actually play.

Apps do more than play files

Search quality, credits, metadata, playlists, recommendations, queue management, downloads, and visible format information can matter more in daily use than a difference between two high-resolution ceilings. Qobuz is particularly attractive to people who read credits and investigate editions. Apple Music benefits from its wider ecosystem and Apple Music Classical integration. Spotify remains the strongest discovery-oriented option. TIDAL adds Dolby Atmos and a broad mainstream presentation, while Amazon is especially convenient in Alexa households.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network and casting support can be decisive

A service may support 24-bit/192 kHz in its own application but not through every smart speaker, television, receiver, or casting protocol. Check the exact hardware model and connection method. Proprietary direct-play systems such as Qobuz Connect or Spotify Connect may behave differently from screen mirroring or generic casting.

Data use and offline storage

Higher-resolution audio consumes more bandwidth and storage. Amazon estimates Ultra HD streaming at up to 5–10 Mbps. TIDAL warns that Max playback can use up to 40 MB per minute depending on the sample rate. These are service guidance figures, not universal measurements: the actual amount changes with codec, track length, selected resolution, and delivery conditions. [c006][c011]

  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

On a mobile plan, download albums over Wi-Fi before traveling and reserve the highest quality for locations with sufficient bandwidth. On a phone or tablet, a large offline hi-res library can consume storage quickly. If the app permits separate mobile-streaming, Wi-Fi-streaming, and download settings, configure them independently rather than assuming one quality choice controls all three.

Does high-res audio actually sound better?

Not automatically. A higher sample rate or bit depth describes how the audio is encoded; it does not guarantee a better master or a clearly audible improvement. The original master, mastering choices, volume matching, headphones or speakers, room acoustics, DAC implementation, and the listener’s hearing can matter more than the format label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lossless audio can still be valuable because it avoids lossy compression and preserves the supplied digital file. But “lossless” does not mean “universally audible as better,” and “24-bit/192 kHz” does not mean “better than every 16-bit/44.1 kHz master.” If a service has better search, recommendations, music availability, or family value, those practical advantages may be more meaningful than a specification you cannot verify at the output.

Which service should you choose?

  • Choose Qobuz for the strongest high-resolution focus, detailed music presentation, and the option to buy permanent hi-res downloads.
  • Choose TIDAL for a broad audiophile service centered on HiRes FLAC, with Dolby Atmos as an additional attraction.
  • Choose Apple Music if you use Apple devices and want lossless, hi-res options, and Spatial Audio without a separate hi-res subscription charge.
  • Choose Amazon Music Unlimited if you already pay for Prime, use Alexa, or want the strongest mainstream value inside Amazon’s ecosystem.
  • Choose Spotify Premium if discovery, playlists, social listening, and device integration matter more than going beyond CD sample rate.
  • Choose Deezer if CD-quality FLAC is enough and Deezer’s catalog or interface is a better match, but verify any current hi-res claim before treating it as one.

For most dedicated hi-res listeners, the final decision should come down to three checks: whether the albums you care about are actually offered in the desired resolution, whether your device can preserve that resolution, and whether the service’s app makes your library easier to use. The theoretical maximum should be the tie-breaker, not the starting point.

Sources and scope note

Service capabilities, prices, and device guidance are based on the official support and pricing materials identified in the research for this comparison: Qobuz [c001–c005], TIDAL [c006–c007], Apple Music [c008–c010], Amazon Music Unlimited [c011–c013], Spotify [c014–c015], and Deezer [c016–c017]. Prices, trials, supported devices, format labels, catalog counts, and regional availability can change. Company-reported catalog totals are not independent audits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best music streaming service for true high-resolution audio?

Qobuz and TIDAL are the strongest specialist choices. Both publish support for up to 24-bit/192 kHz, but the actual resolution depends on the album, app, device, connection, and output chain. Qobuz has the stronger ownership and editorial angle; TIDAL adds Dolby Atmos and a broad mainstream service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an external DAC for hi-res music?

Sometimes. Apple says iPhone and iPad need an external DAC for sample rates above 48 kHz, and Amazon gives similar guidance for rates such as 96 and 192 kHz. A DAC is only useful if the source device, app, connection, and DAC all support the intended format.

Is Spotify Premium high-resolution audio?

Spotify Premium supports lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz for eligible listeners with supported hardware. That is lossless and above CD bit depth, but it does not reach the 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz ceiling of Qobuz, TIDAL, Apple Music, or Amazon Music Unlimited.

Is CD-quality lossless audio different from high-resolution audio?

Yes. CD-quality lossless is generally 16-bit/44.1 kHz. High-resolution audio is usually above CD quality, such as 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz. Both can be lossless, and a higher numerical resolution does not automatically sound better.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Qobuz is the best fit for a hi-res specialist who also values music ownership; TIDAL is the strongest all-around audiophile alternative. Apple Music wins for Apple households, Amazon Music Unlimited is the value pick for Prime members, Spotify wins discovery, and Deezer remains a CD-quality lossless option rather than a confirmed hi-res leader. Whichever service you select, verify the specific album and the complete wired or network playback chain before paying for its highest quality.
