The strongest August 2024 streaming picks were spread across several services rather than concentrated in one runaway hit. The month brought final-season franchise television with The Umbrella Academy, fantasy with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, prestige drama with Industry, anime with Terminator Zero and Rick and Morty: The Anime, documentaries including Chimp Crazy and OceanXplorers, and a substantial wave of older films returning to streaming libraries.
This is a U.S.-focused retrospective guide to the August 2024 calendars. A date below means a title was scheduled to arrive on that service, not necessarily that it premiered worldwide on that day. Catalogs change, and availability—particularly for library films—can vary by country.
August 2024’s best streaming bets at a glance
The list below is an editorial watchlist, not a measured quality ranking. These are the releases that offered the clearest hooks for different kinds of viewers:
- For a major returning series: The Umbrella Academy season 4 on Netflix, August 8.
- For epic fantasy: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 on Prime Video, August 29.
- For prestige drama: Industry season 3 on Max, August 11.
- For mythology and dark comedy: KAOS on Netflix, August 29.
- For anime: Terminator Zero on Netflix, August 29, and Rick and Morty: The Anime on Max, August 16.
- For documentaries and real-life stories: Chimp Crazy on Max, OceanXplorers on Disney+ and Hulu, and Inside the Mind of a Dog on Netflix.
- For a broad action-comedy: Jackpot! on Prime Video, August 15, or The Union on Netflix, August 16.
- For a large movie-library refresh: Prime Video, Max, Hulu and Paramount+ with Showtime all added substantial batches on August 1.
Netflix’s August 2024 streaming calendar is the central date reference for this overview, with platform-specific sections from the same schedule and Disney’s official U.S. listing used where noted.

Netflix
Netflix had one of the month’s clearest concentration points: several recognizable franchises and returning shows, followed by a busy final week led by KAOS and Terminator Zero. The service also used August for documentaries, reality programming, international series and director’s-cut reissues.
Netflix’s major August premieres
- August 1: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
- August 2: Rebel Moon — Part One: Director’s Cut, Rebel Moon — Part Two: Director’s Cut and Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.
- August 8: The Umbrella Academy season 4, the superhero series’ final season.
- August 9: Blue Ribbon Baking Championship and Inside the Mind of a Dog.
- August 14: Daughters and Worst Ex Ever.
- August 15: Emily in Paris season 4, part 1.
- August 16: The Union, an action-comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry.
- August 29: KAOS, a modern series built around Greek mythology, and Terminator Zero, an anime entry in the Terminator franchise.
- August 30: The Deliverance.
For viewers who want something beyond English-language U.S. originals, the calendar also included From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke season 3, Shahmaran season 2, Pokémon Horizons: The Series part 3, Love Next Door, Baby Fever season 2, Secret Lives of Orangutans and Untold: Sign Stealer. The supplied monthly listing identifies these as part of Netflix’s August slate but does not provide a single date for each in the material summarized here, so check the Netflix listing for the exact local drop.
The director’s cuts of Rebel Moon are worth separating from an ordinary catalog addition: they were expanded versions of films already associated with the franchise, while The Umbrella Academy and Emily in Paris represented returning television properties. Netflix’s broader 2024 film and series preview provides annual-slate context, but the dated monthly calendar is the better source for August arrival dates.
Prime Video and Freevee
Prime Video combined new genre programming with a particularly attractive August 1 library drop. The month’s most visible new arrivals ranged from DC animation and horror to romantic comedy and Middle-earth fantasy.

Prime Video’s August releases
- August 1: Batman: Caped Crusader.
- August 6: French Girl.
- August 8: One Fast Move and season 3 of The Mallorca Files.
- August 9: Nadie nos va a extrañar.
- August 13: Night Swim.
- August 15: Jackpot!.
- August 22: Drive-Away Dolls.
- August 26: No Gain No Love.
- August 29: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2.
The August 1 catalog refresh included 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Pulp Fiction, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, Superman, Scarface, Psycho, The Warriors, The Whale, Traffic and What Lies Beneath. That is a useful distinction for anyone building a weekend movie queue: a library film can be newly available on Prime Video without being a new Prime Video production.
Some entries in the calendar were identified as Freevee availability rather than standard Prime Video subscription availability. Do not assume that every August 1 movie above was included under the same subscription terms; look for the service label and any ad-supported or rental designation in the Prime Video interface.
Amazon’s Prime Video entertainment coverage places these releases within Amazon MGM Studios’ wider film strategy, but the dated August calendar remains the relevant source for individual service dates.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
If your television does not have reliable apps for every service in this guide, a streaming media player can be a practical way to consolidate Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max and other apps. That is a convenience option rather than a recommendation for a specific model; app support, 4K capability and subscription requirements still vary by device and service.
Disney+
Disney’s official schedule is explicitly U.S.-focused and includes a mixture of shorts, children’s programming, reality and documentary content, returning series and weekly episode drops. It is important not to read every title as a full-season premiere.
Disney+ dates for August 2024
- August 2: Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures season 2 shorts.
- August 7: Grown-ish season 6.
- August 8: SuperKitties: Su-Purr Adventures shorts and Are You Sure?!.
- August 15, 22 and 29: new weekly episodes of Are You Sure?!, following its August 8 launch.
- August 19: OceanXplorers.
- August 21: Me & Winnie the Pooh season 2, Playdate with Winnie the Pooh shorts season 2 and Selenkay.
- August 22: Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal.
- August 23: Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends season 3 and Minnie’s Bow-Toons: Camp Minnie.
- August 28: SuperKitties season 2.
Documentary viewers had a particularly clear reason to check Disney+ in August: OceanXplorers offered an ocean-science and exploration angle, while Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal centered on a maritime mystery. The exact appeal differs—one is exploratory natural-world programming, the other a history-and-investigation story—but both fit a nonfiction-first watchlist.
Disney’s official August listing states that it covers the U.S. service and warns that library availability may vary by region and change over time. That warning matters for a title such as Grown-ish, which is a library addition rather than a newly produced Disney+ original.
Max
Max’s August offering drew from several identities at once: HBO drama, Adult Swim animation, international television, documentary and reality programming, and a rotating movie library. The service’s most distinctive new nonfiction title was Chimp Crazy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Max’s August releases
- August 1 library additions: Beetlejuice, Amelie, How to Train Your Dragon, Pretty Woman, Sherlock Holmes, Taken, Rio, Where the Wild Things Are and the Grown Ups films.
- August 11: Industry season 3.
- August 16: Rick and Morty: The Anime.
- August 18: Chimp Crazy.
- August 23: The Thaw season 2.
- August 25: City of God: The Fight Rages On.
Chimp Crazy was the standout pick for documentary audiences: it belongs to the reality-and-nonfiction side of the Max schedule rather than the scripted HBO drama lane. Meanwhile, Industry supplied a returning prestige drama, and Rick and Morty: The Anime gave Adult Swim viewers a franchise spin-off with a different animation identity.
None of the August 1 movies should automatically be called a Max original. They were library additions, and their availability was subject to the same rotation that affects other catalog titles. The Max schedule is therefore most useful as a snapshot of what was added during that month, not a guarantee of permanent access.
Hulu
Hulu leaned heavily into library programming, reality television and complete-season or multi-episode additions. It was also a strong month for viewers who prefer to start a back catalog rather than wait for a weekly original.

Hulu’s August releases
- August 1: complete seasons or episodes of Billion Dollar Wreck, Buddy Valastro’s Cake Dynasty, Interrogation Cam and dubbed Naruto Shippuden; plus Casino, The Beach, The Full Monty, Marley & Me, Raising Arizona, Tron: Legacy and Zero Dark Thirty.
- August 2: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
- August 7: Dance Moms: A New Era.
- August 12: Solar Opposites season 5.
- August 19: OceanXplorers, alongside a major batch of AMC-related series.
- August 27: Only Murders in the Building season 4.
The August 19 library expansion was especially useful for binge watchers. It included A Discovery of Witches, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, Dark Winds, Fear the Walking Dead, Gangs of London, Interview with the Vampire, Preacher, The Terror and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
Hulu’s calendar also listed OceanXplorers on August 19, the same date supplied for its Disney+ arrival. That does not by itself establish identical regional rights or permanent availability on both services, so viewers should verify the listing in their local Hulu and Disney+ catalogs. The full Hulu August schedule separates these additions from the service’s later weekly programming.
Paramount+ with Showtime
Paramount+ with Showtime paired a large movie-library refresh with several recognizable returning or franchise properties. Its August schedule was particularly useful for viewers looking for established films rather than only brand-new streaming originals.
Paramount+ with Showtime dates
- August 1 library additions: Airplane!, Almost Famous, City of God, Coming to America, Election, Erin Brockovich, Pulp Fiction, Training Day, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Zodiac and multiple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.
- August 9: Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- August 11: the final-season premiere of SEAL Team.
- August 16: RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars.
- August 27: Breathe.
The service’s movie batch covered comedy, crime, drama, action and animation, while the new series gave the month a combination of franchise television, a final season and unscripted competition. As with the other August 1 refreshes, these are service-availability labels, not claims that every film was newly released in 2024.
See the Paramount+ with Showtime calendar for the schedule context and the distinction between library titles and new programming.
Peacock
Peacock’s August 2024 identity was shaped by the Paris Olympics as much as by movies and scripted television. That makes its schedule different from a conventional monthly premiere list: much of the service’s value was live, date-specific sports coverage rather than a film or season that could be started at any time.
Peacock’s August releases and live events
- August 1: a movie-library refresh.
- August 8: Mr. Throwback.
- August 9: The Bikeriders and Renfield.
- August 15: Bel-Air season 3.
- August 16: Polite Society.
- August 23: The Killer.
- August 30: The Fall Guy and its extended cut.
Through the first half of August, Peacock also carried Paris 2024 coverage, with individual events scheduled across gymnastics, swimming, track and field, volleyball, water polo and other sports. These Olympic entries should be treated as live-event windows, not ordinary movie or television premieres; their usefulness depended on the competition calendar and the viewer’s interest in specific events.

Documentary and nonfiction picks
August 2024 was a particularly productive month for documentary viewers, although the nonfiction titles were distributed across different services and formats:
- Chimp Crazy — Max, August 18: the month’s most prominent documentary-series pick in the supplied schedule.
- OceanXplorers — Disney+ and Hulu listings, August 19: an ocean exploration and science-focused choice, with availability requiring regional verification.
- Inside the Mind of a Dog — Netflix, August 9: a natural-world and animal-focused documentary option.
- Secret Lives of Orangutans — Netflix: another animal and conservation-oriented entry on Netflix’s August calendar; the supplied summary does not give its individual date.
- Daughters — Netflix, August 14: a documentary feature included among Netflix’s mid-month releases.
- Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal — Disney+, August 22: a maritime mystery and historical-investigation pick.
- Untold: Sign Stealer — Netflix: part of Netflix’s returning Untold documentary strand, with no individual date supplied in the summary.
- Worst Ex Ever — Netflix, August 14: a reality-based true-crime entry that may appeal to viewers looking for episodic real-life stories.
These titles are not interchangeable. A viewer seeking wildlife or science should start with OceanXplorers, Inside the Mind of a Dog or Secret Lives of Orangutans; a viewer seeking investigation and crime may prefer Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal, Untold: Sign Stealer or Worst Ex Ever; and Chimp Crazy occupies a more character-driven documentary-series space.
How to read the August release dates
New to a service is not the same as newly released
Streaming calendars mix several categories: new original films, returning seasons, library acquisitions, older movies becoming available again, and content that may be offered through an ad-supported service such as Freevee. A date such as August 1 often describes a catalog refresh rather than a world premiere.
Full-season drops and weekly episodes are different
The Umbrella Academy season 4 was presented as a final-season arrival on August 8, while Disney+’s Are You Sure?! began on August 8 and continued with new episodes on August 15, 22 and 29. Calling both a full-season premiere would give viewers the wrong expectation. Always check whether the service lists a complete season, a multi-episode launch or a weekly episode drop.
Availability can change after the month ends
The dates in this article describe the August 2024 schedule, not guaranteed present-day access. Films rotate in and out, rights can differ between countries, and a title may move between subscription, ad-supported, rental or purchase availability. Disney’s official announcement is explicit that its listing is for the U.S. and that library availability varies by region; the same practical caution is appropriate for every service here.

A simple way to choose what to watch
- Choose the viewing mode first. For a completed season, start with The Umbrella Academy, Industry or Solar Opposites. For a weekly appointment, Are You Sure?! was the relevant Disney+ choice.
- Choose a genre or subject. Fantasy points to The Rings of Power; anime to Terminator Zero or Rick and Morty: The Anime; documentaries to Chimp Crazy, OceanXplorers or Inside the Mind of a Dog.
- Check whether the title is new or catalog programming. The August 1 movie batches on Prime Video, Max, Hulu and Paramount+ were often better for a familiar-film marathon than for a new-release night.
- Confirm the service tier and region. This is particularly important for Freevee-labeled titles, Disney+ library programming, and films that may have moved after August 2024.
- Account for event timing. Peacock’s Olympics coverage was tied to live competition dates, so it required a different plan from a film or bingeable season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these August 2024 streaming dates worldwide?
No. This is a U.S.-focused calendar. Streaming rights and release dates can differ by country, and the Disney+ source specifically identifies its schedule as U.S.-only. Library availability can also change after the original date.
Does a date in the guide mean the title premiered in August 2024?
Not always. The date may mean that an older movie or series became available on a service. Prime Video, Max, Hulu and Paramount+ all had major library refreshes in August. Some Prime Video entries were also identified as Freevee availability rather than standard subscription streaming.
Which August 2024 streaming releases are documentaries?
The main nonfiction picks were Chimp Crazy on Max, OceanXplorers on Disney+ and Hulu, Inside the Mind of a Dog, Daughters, Secret Lives of Orangutans and Untold: Sign Stealer on Netflix, and Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal on Disney+.
Which shows released weekly instead of all at once?
Disney+’s Are You Sure?! began on August 8, 2024, with additional episodes listed for August 15, 22 and 29. That is different from a full-season drop such as The Umbrella Academy season 4.
Why is Apple TV+ not included with dated releases?
The supplied research does not contain a verified Apple TV+ August 2024 schedule. The article does not assign dates without a source, so Apple TV+ is acknowledged but not given an invented calendar.
The Bottom Line
For the broadest August 2024 watchlist, begin with The Umbrella Academy, KAOS and Terminator Zero on Netflix; The Rings of Power and Jackpot! on Prime Video; Industry and Chimp Crazy on Max; and OceanXplorers on Disney+ or Hulu. Then use the August 1 library refreshes when you want a familiar movie rather than a new premiere. Confirm the service, region and subscription tier before planning a watch night, because streaming catalogs are temporary and the dates here describe the U.S. August 2024 calendar.
