There was no legal, permanent way to watch every 2023-24 NBA game live online for free in the United States. The closest free option was a local ABC broadcast received over the air with an antenna. That covered selected regular-season games and the 2024 NBA Finals, but not the complete NBA schedule.
Online viewing through ABC, NBA League Pass, ESPN, TNT, and NBA TV depended on authentication, subscriptions, location, and blackout rules. This guide explains what worked during the completed 2023-24 season, which ran from October 24, 2023, through the 2024 Finals, and what each option could—and could not—provide.
What “watch NBA online free” really meant in 2023-24
The 2023-24 NBA season was divided among TNT, ESPN, ABC, NBA TV, League Pass, and local broadcasters. No single free website legally carried all of those games live.
There is also an important difference between free-to-air and free online streaming:

- Free online: ABC.com, the ABC app, or an NBA promotion could sometimes provide access, but authentication, dates, rights, and location restrictions applied.
- Paid streaming: League Pass and television-provider services offered broader access, but they were not permanent free solutions and remained subject to blackouts.
Because the season is now historical, the December 2023 promotion described below has expired. It should not be mistaken for a current free trial or an ongoing free League Pass tier.
The best legal free option: receive ABC with an antenna
For a U.S. viewer who wanted NBA games without a monthly TV bill, the most dependable genuinely free route was a local ABC station received over the air.
ABC carried 16 regular-season games during 2023-24, including NBA Saturday Primetime and NBA Sunday Showcase windows. The 2024 NBA Finals were also exclusively broadcast on ABC. That made ABC particularly valuable to viewers who did not subscribe to cable, satellite, or a live-TV streaming service.
If your local ABC affiliate is receivable at your address, an indoor HDTV antenna can provide the broadcast without a monthly TV bill. The antenna itself may involve an upfront purchase, and reception depends on distance from the transmitter, buildings, terrain, antenna placement, signal strength, and whether your local affiliate carries the scheduled game.
An antenna is not a complete NBA package. It cannot receive TNT, ESPN, NBA TV, or every game carried by a local sports broadcaster. It also cannot guarantee that every ABC game listed nationally will appear in exactly the same form on every local affiliate.
How to use the free ABC route
- Check the historical or archived ABC schedule. Confirm that the game was assigned to ABC rather than TNT, ESPN, NBA TV, or a local outlet.
- Check your local affiliate. National listings do not guarantee identical local coverage. A station may have local programming, a schedule adjustment, or no usable signal at your address.
- Connect and scan the antenna. Use the television’s channel-scan or auto-tune function, then confirm that the local ABC channel is stable before game time.
- Test reception from the intended viewing location. Moving an indoor antenna near a window or higher position can affect reception, but no antenna can overcome every geographic limitation.
- Watch the ABC broadcast when it airs. This provides the game without a recurring television subscription, assuming reception is adequate.
The Federal Communications Commission describes broadcast television as a free over-the-air service, but “free” refers to the absence of a direct broadcast charge. It does not mean that every household receives every station or that hardware, internet service, or a television costs nothing.
Could ABC.com or the ABC app stream the games for free?
Sometimes, but the ABC app alone was not a guaranteed key to every NBA broadcast. ABC made programming available through ABC.com, its app, and supported connected devices, but online access could require credentials from a participating television provider. Location and digital rights could also affect availability.

ABC’s 2023-24 viewing guidance listed supported platforms including an Amazon Fire TV streaming device. That type of device could make it easier to access the ABC app on a compatible television, but it did not bypass authentication, local availability, blackouts, or the need for an eligible ABC broadcast.

Temporary NBA ID and League Pass previews
The NBA occasionally offered limited free previews to NBA ID members. During the 2023-24 season, NBA ID members received a complimentary League Pass preview on December 23, 2023. That promotion provided access to that night’s games and League Pass features for the designated preview period.
The key limitation was the date. It was a temporary promotion, not a free League Pass plan that remained available throughout the season. Later NBA ID Member Days promotions—including events in November 2024 and March 13–15, 2026—show that the league continued to use time-limited previews, but those later offers were not 2023-24 offers and should not be applied retroactively.
For a future season, it is reasonable to check the NBA App and NBA ID promotions around opening week, major holidays, All-Star weekend, and special member events. Availability, eligibility, duration, and blackout rules can change. NBA terms also state that the league may offer free trials at its discretion and that some trials can automatically convert to a paid subscription unless canceled according to the stated terms.
NBA League Pass was useful—but it was not free or complete in the U.S.
NBA League Pass was the principal official service for live out-of-market regular-season games during 2023-24. The NBA made League Pass available through the NBA App, NBA.com, connected televisions, and participating television providers, and identified 934 regular-season games as exclusive to League Pass.
“Out of market” is the important phrase. If you lived outside a team’s local broadcast territory, League Pass could generally be useful for watching that team’s regular-season games live. If you lived in the team’s local market, that team’s games could be blacked out live even though you had paid for League Pass.

U.S. blackouts also applied to nationally televised games. Local team games and nationally televised games were not available live through League Pass in the United States. Under the blackout policy, local games became available on demand three days after the live broadcast, while nationally televised games became available at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time the following day.
Playoff and Finals games were also blacked out live in the United States because they were carried by national broadcasters. League Pass therefore made sense for fans following out-of-market regular-season games, but it was not a legal method for watching every local, national, playoff, and Finals game live.

How the 2023-24 NBA schedule was distributed
The season’s coverage changed depending on the stage of competition:
- Regular season: Games were distributed among TNT, ESPN, ABC, NBA TV, League Pass, and local broadcasters. The regular season ended on April 14, 2024.
- Play-In Tournament: The Play-In ran from April 16 through April 19. Coverage was subject to the applicable national broadcaster and provider requirements.
- Playoffs: The playoffs began on April 20. League Pass blackout rules meant that U.S. viewers could not use it as a live replacement for nationally televised playoff coverage.
- NBA Finals: The 2024 Finals began on June 6 and were exclusively broadcast on ABC. An antenna could therefore provide a legal no-monthly-TV-fee route to the Finals for viewers who could receive their local ABC affiliate.
The fact that a game was part of the NBA schedule did not mean that it was free online. The broadcast network and the viewer’s local market determined which legal access route applied.
Free, conditional, and paid options compared
| Method | Free? | What it could provide | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local ABC station with an antenna | Yes, after equipment purchase | ABC games, including the 2024 Finals where reception was available | Only ABC broadcasts; reception, affiliate coverage, and local scheduling varied |
| NBA ID promotional preview | Sometimes | Limited League Pass games and features during a designated promotion | Temporary, promotion-specific, and subject to restrictions |
| NBA League Pass | No, except during limited promotions | Many live out-of-market regular-season games and replays | U.S. local, national, playoff, and Finals blackouts |
| ABC.com or the ABC app | Conditional | ABC programming where digital rights and access permitted | May require authentication, a qualifying provider, and supported-market access |
| ESPN, TNT, or NBA TV | Usually no | National games and NBA programming carried by those outlets | Usually required a qualifying television provider or subscription |
| Unauthorized stream sites | Not legitimate | Often advertised as broad or complete game access | Copyright, reliability, privacy, deceptive-advertising, and security risks |
Which option fit each type of viewer?
If you wanted to spend nothing on a monthly TV subscription
Start with ABC over the air. Confirm that your local station was carrying the game and that you could receive a stable signal. This was the strongest legal free path for selected ABC games and the 2024 Finals, but it did not cover the rest of the schedule.
If you specifically wanted internet streaming
Check ABC.com or the ABC app when the game was on ABC, but expect access checks. A supported streaming device could help with playback on a television; it could not create rights or remove provider authentication. Also check the NBA App for a date-specific NBA ID preview rather than assuming a free trial existed.

If you followed a team outside your local market
League Pass was the more suitable official option, provided the game was an out-of-market regular-season broadcast. It was paid and still subject to national and local blackouts in the United States.
If you wanted nationally televised games
You generally needed access to the relevant provider or service carrying ESPN, TNT, ABC, or NBA TV. League Pass was not a substitute for those live national broadcasts in the U.S.
If you wanted every game live
No single free legal option met that requirement during 2023-24. The practical solution involved combining local ABC reception, appropriate provider access for national broadcasts, and League Pass for eligible out-of-market regular-season games.

Sites promising every NBA game free often operated without broadcast rights, disappeared without notice, and exposed visitors to aggressive advertising, malware, credential theft, or deceptive download prompts. Not every unauthorized site will present the same risk, but the lack of licensing and reliability makes these services unsafe and legally problematic.

Important season-date note
The 2023-24 regular season began on October 24, 2023, and ended on April 14, 2024. The Play-In Tournament took place from April 16–19, the playoffs began on April 20, and the 2024 NBA Finals began on June 6. The December 23, 2023 NBA ID preview belonged to that completed season and is no longer a current offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was there a legal website that streamed every 2023-24 NBA game free?
No. In the United States, there was no permanent legal free streaming service that carried every game live. Coverage was divided among ABC, ESPN, TNT, NBA TV, local broadcasters, and paid League Pass access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCould I watch the 2024 NBA Finals free with an antenna?
Potentially. The Finals were exclusively broadcast on ABC, so viewers who could receive their local ABC affiliate over the air could watch without a monthly television subscription. Reception and local affiliate availability varied.
Was NBA League Pass free during the 2023-24 season?
No. League Pass was a paid service, although NBA ID members received a limited complimentary preview on December 23, 2023. That promotion was temporary and did not create a permanent free tier.
Why did League Pass not show my local team’s game?
U.S. League Pass blackouts applied to local team games and nationally televised games. League Pass was primarily intended for eligible out-of-market regular-season games, not for bypassing local or national broadcast restrictions.
Could the ABC app stream NBA games without a TV subscription?
Not reliably for every viewer. ABC offered programming through ABC.com and its app, but authentication, participating-provider credentials, location, supported devices, and digital rights could affect access.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: During the 2023-24 season, the best legal free route was a receivable local ABC broadcast—especially the 2024 Finals—using an antenna, not a website that carried every game. NBA ID previews were occasional and temporary. League Pass was the strongest official option for many out-of-market regular-season games, but it was paid and subject to U.S. blackouts. No free legal service covered the entire NBA schedule live.
