Rental, purchase, and subscription access are different rights:
- Subscription streaming: You watch while the title remains included in the service’s catalog and your subscription is active.
- Digital rental: You pay for temporary access under the storefront’s rental window and playback rules.
- Digital purchase: You pay to add the title to a retailer’s digital library, subject to that retailer’s terms.
- Free ad-supported viewing: You do not pay a viewing fee, but the service may show advertising and can change its catalog.
Do not assume that a digital listing on Amazon Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership. Check whether the specific listing says subscription, rental, or purchase before completing the transaction.

The family includes Rebekah, played by Lucy Liu; Chris, played by Chris Sullivan; Chloe, played by Callina Liang; and Tyler, played by Eddy Maday. Julia Fox plays Cece, West Mulholland plays Ryan, and Lucas Papaelias plays Carl.
Rather than treating the haunting as a series of conventional appearances seen from an outside observer’s perspective, the film makes the camera itself the ghost’s point of view. The audience drifts through rooms and hallways with the unseen presence, watching conversations and confrontations from an unusually intimate angle.
That approach makes the family drama as important as the supernatural mystery. Chloe is especially receptive to the possibility that something is in the house, while the other family members are occupied by grief, conflict, secrecy, and competing loyalties. The result is less a conventional jump-scare movie than an experiential haunted-house story built around domestic tension.
Who made Presence?
- Director: Steven Soderbergh
- Writer: David Koepp
- U.S. theatrical distributor: NEON
- Principal cast: Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, Julia Fox, West Mulholland, and Lucas Papaelias
- Genre: Horror/thriller with family-drama and mystery elements
Soderbergh’s formal decision to make the camera represent the ghost is the film’s defining feature. The camera does not simply wait for the entity to appear; it occupies the house as the entity, turning ordinary domestic spaces into a shifting supernatural environment.

Is Presence worth watching if you want a traditional ghost story?
It depends on what you want from a haunting movie. If you prefer a clearly visible supernatural villain, frequent conventional scares, and an objective camera, Presence takes a more unusual route. Its central experiment is to make viewers inhabit the ghost’s movement through the house.
If you enjoy slow-burn horror, confined settings, mysteries that unfold through family behavior, and films where visual form is part of the story, the premise is likely to be the main attraction. The movie is short, but its floating point of view gives even routine conversations an unstable, watched quality.
This is a spoiler-free description. The film’s later revelations concern the nature of the presence and its relationship to the family, so viewers who want to experience those discoveries should avoid detailed plot summaries before watching.
