Hulu’s three-part docuseries The Scream Murder: A True Teen Horror Story revisits the 2006 killing of 16-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart in Pocatello, Idaho—a case in which prosecutors presented evidence that two teenage classmates planned and recorded the crime while invoking the imagery of the 1996 slasher film Scream.

The comparison is a description of an alleged imitation documented in the case record, not a finding that the movie caused the murder. The series, released February 11, 2026, examines the killing, the videotape that became central to the investigation, the trials of Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik, and the lasting impact on Cassie’s family.
What is The Scream Murder: A True Teen Horror Story about?
The Hulu documentary series follows the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart, a 16-year-old high-school student who was house-sitting at her cousin’s residence at Whispering Cliffs in Pocatello, Idaho, during the night of September 22–23, 2006.

Cassie’s boyfriend, Matt Beckham, and classmates Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper were among the people connected to her final hours. After Cassie was found dead, investigators focused on Adamcik and Draper, who were among the last known people to see her alive.
The series’ central question is how a recognizable piece of slasher-film imagery became entangled with a real killing. According to the official ABC News Studios description, Draper and Adamcik were fascinated by horror films, particularly Scream, and attempted to stage their own version by selecting a classmate, setting a scene, and recording what happened.
That framing is supported by more than promotional language. Idaho Supreme Court opinions describe a videotape made before the killing, conversations about visiting Cassie’s house and selecting her as a victim, and references to horror-film conventions. The opinions also describe evidence recovered from the Black 2 Rock Canyon area, including knives and other items.
The documentary’s “movie come to life” premise should therefore be understood carefully: the record supports the conclusion that the defendants used horror-film imagery and planned a recorded spectacle. It does not establish that watching Scream generally causes violence or that the film was legally determined to have caused this crime.
Who was Cassie Stoddart?
Cassie was a 16-year-old student from Pocatello, Idaho. She was house-sitting at a residence known in the legal record as Whispering Cliffs when she was killed in September 2006.
Keeping Cassie at the center of the story matters. The case is often summarized through its shocking connection to a famous horror film, but the underlying event was not a fictional scenario or a film adaptation. It was the death of a teenager and the long-term trauma experienced by her family, friends, and community.
The documentary follows the investigation and prosecutions while also examining the effects on Cassie’s family and on the parents of the defendants. ABC News Studios says the series returns to Pocatello 18 years later, placing the case in a longer personal and community context rather than treating the videotape as the entire story.
What did the videotape show?
A videotape recorded before the killing became one of the most important pieces of evidence in the case. The Idaho Supreme Court’s opinions describe recorded conversations in which Draper and Adamcik discussed going to Cassie’s house, choosing her as a victim, and killing her. The recordings also included references to horror films and the idea of creating a spectacle.
The tape helped prosecutors establish planning and intent. It also explains why this case is repeatedly associated with Scream: the connection was not based solely on the fact that the defendants had seen a popular horror movie. Their own recorded discussions, as summarized in the appellate record, linked their plans to film-inspired imagery.
There is an important ethical distinction between explaining the evidence and reproducing it for shock value. The court opinions contain disturbing material, but repeating long excerpts or graphic descriptions would risk turning Cassie’s death into entertainment. The documentary’s most responsible contribution is its opportunity to examine the evidence, the legal process, and the human consequences without allowing the perpetrators’ performance to dominate the story.
Did Scream cause the murder?
No. The available record does not support that claim.
The defensible description is that the defendants appeared to imitate or stage elements associated with a slasher movie. The court record documents their references to horror films, their planning discussions, and their use of a videotape. Those facts explain the comparison made by the series and its marketing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThey do not prove a general causal relationship between the 1996 film and real-world violence. Millions of people have watched Scream without committing violence, and the case involved the defendants’ own choices, planning, and actions. A headline suggesting that the movie itself caused the crime would go beyond what the legal record establishes.
The distinction is especially important in true crime. A familiar film reference makes a case easier to market, but it can also shift attention away from the victim and toward the perpetrators’ attempt to create a narrative about themselves. Here, the strongest evidence is not that fiction magically became reality; it is that the defendants reportedly tried to use the language and staging of fiction while committing an actual crime.
What happened to Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik?
Both defendants were juveniles when the crime occurred, but they were tried as adults.
Brian Draper
Draper’s conviction for first-degree murder was affirmed by the Idaho Supreme Court in 2011. The court vacated his conspiracy conviction because of a jury-instruction problem and sent that count back for further proceedings. The appellate decision did not overturn the first-degree-murder conviction.
Torey Adamcik
Adamcik’s first-degree-murder conviction and sentence were also challenged in later proceedings. In a 2017 post-conviction decision, the Idaho Supreme Court affirmed the denial of relief and reiterated that he had received a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for the murder.

These legal outcomes predate the Hulu series. The defendants were not sentenced in 2026; the docuseries revisits the original investigation, trials, convictions, and subsequent legal arguments.
Was there also a lawsuit involving the school district?
Yes. Members of Cassie’s family and the family who owned the residence brought a related civil case alleging that the Pocatello School District had not responded adequately to earlier warnings about a possible “Columbine-like” school shooting.
The Idaho Supreme Court affirmed dismissal of those claims against the school district in 2010. This background may help viewers understand the wider questions raised around warnings and institutional responsibility, but it should not be presented as proof that school officials caused the murder. The criminal convictions and the civil claims involved different legal questions.

The series is a Hulu documentary, not a fictionalized adaptation and not a physical movie release. Readers looking for a DVD or Blu-ray should not assume that a disc edition of the docuseries exists simply because the case is connected to a theatrical film. The film explicitly referenced in the series’ framing is the 1996 Scream; any physical-media recommendation should be checked for the correct edition and current availability.
What the series should—and should not—turn into
The case presents an unusually direct opportunity to explore how people can use popular culture to construct an identity or stage an event. But that subject can easily become sensationalized.
- Center Cassie and her family. The crime’s unusual media hook should not eclipse the person who was killed.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. The appellate opinions document the recordings, planning discussions, and convictions. The documentary may add interviews or analysis, but those should not be confused with court findings.
- Do not treat the perpetrators’ performance as the story’s moral authority. A recorded attempt to imitate a film can be evidence while still being manipulative and self-dramatizing.
- Avoid causal claims about horror films. The documented facts support imitation in this case, not a broad theory that horror movies cause violence.
- Remember the limits of retrospective storytelling. Returning to Pocatello 18 years later may illuminate lasting consequences, but no documentary can undo the loss or provide a simple explanation for it.
For viewers, the most useful lens is not “What if Scream happened in real life?” It is “How did two young defendants use the imagery of a fictional slasher story, and what happens when a real family is left to live with the consequences?”
