‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Pulled by ABC After Trump FCC Threat: What Happened?

ABC temporarily pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025 after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned broadcasters to act against Kimmel. The show returned six days later, and the available record does not establish a formal FCC order forcing ABC to cancel it.

Jimmy Kimmel Live was pulled from ABC on September 17, 2025, after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly pressured broadcasters to act following Kimmel’s comments about reactions to Charlie Kirk’s death. ABC called the move an indefinite preemption, not a permanent cancellation; Disney restored the show on September 23, and Kimmel later extended his ABC contract through May 2027.

The episode is often described as “Jimmy Kimmel Live” being canceled after a Trump FCC threat, but that wording needs qualification. The documented sequence included political pressure associated with the Trump administration, Carr’s warning, separate affiliate preemptions, ABC’s own stated editorial rationale, and a later FCC license proceeding. The reviewed sources do not establish that the FCC formally ordered ABC to remove the show.

Key takeaways

  • ABC announced an indefinite preemption of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 17, 2025, rather than a permanent cancellation.
  • The announcement followed FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s public warning that broadcasters could act against Kimmel or face “additional work for the FCC ahead.”
  • Disney returned Jimmy Kimmel Live! to ABC on September 23, 2025, six days after the indefinite preemption.
  • Nexstar and Sinclair separately ended their local preemptions on September 26, restoring the program to stations they operated or owned.
  • ABC later reported that Kimmel extended his contract through at least May 2027.
  • The FCC’s 2026 early-renewal proceeding involving eight Disney ABC licenses is a later regulatory development, not proof that the FCC formally ordered ABC to remove the show in 2025.

Why was ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ pulled by ABC after the Trump FCC threat?

ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! after host Jimmy Kimmel commented on the reaction to the September 2025 death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, while FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly warned broadcasters to take action against Kimmel or face further FCC scrutiny. The timing produced an immediate appearance of government pressure, but the available record does not establish that the FCC formally ordered ABC to cancel the program.

Kimmel made the comments on September 15, 2025. Two days later, Carr warned broadcasters that they could act against Kimmel or face “additional work for the FCC ahead.” Nexstar announced that it would preempt the program, Sinclair followed, and ABC then announced that the show would be “preempted indefinitely.” The sequence is documented in the FCC-archived congressional correspondence about the Kimmel dispute and in ABC News’ report on the preemption.

The phrase “Trump FCC threat” compresses several related events into one label. The wider dispute involved political pressure associated with the Trump administration and FCC leadership, but the documented public warning in the immediate sequence came from Carr, not from a formal FCC order directing ABC to remove the show. Carr denied threatening to revoke ABC’s broadcast licenses, while congressional critics argued that his warning created regulatory pressure and raised questions about possible viewpoint discrimination.

What happened when ABC pulled the show?

ABC announced on September 17 that production and broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be suspended indefinitely. “Indefinitely” meant that ABC had not announced a return date; it did not announce that the program had been permanently canceled, that Kimmel had been fired, or that the program’s contract had been terminated.

The announcement followed Carr’s warning and the decisions by major ABC-affiliate owners Nexstar and Sinclair to preempt the show. ABC’s network decision and the affiliates’ decisions were related but distinct. A network announcement did not instantly determine what every locally owned or operated ABC affiliate would broadcast.

The controversy centered on whether ABC’s action was primarily a corporate programming decision, a response to public criticism, a reaction to the affiliates, or the result of regulatory pressure. The available sources document the timing of those events but do not provide a final court or agency finding that identifies one legally established cause.

What did Brendan Carr say about Jimmy Kimmel?

Brendan Carr warned broadcasters that they could take action against Kimmel or face additional FCC attention. The strongest evidence for the government-pressure interpretation is Carr’s own public language and the speed with which affiliate and network decisions followed it.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

“These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Those statements conveyed a warning, but a warning is not the same thing as a formal agency order. The sources reviewed for this article do not show an FCC order requiring ABC to remove a late-night program, nor do they establish through a final adjudication that Carr’s remarks legally caused ABC’s decision.

What reason did Disney give for suspending production?

Disney said it suspended production to prevent the controversy from intensifying during a tense national moment and said it viewed some of Kimmel’s comments as insensitive. Disney’s explanation provides the documented business and editorial rationale, even though the timing also made the decision appear connected to Carr’s warning.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.”

— The Walt Disney Company, in a statement reported by ABC News

“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.”

— The Walt Disney Company, in a statement reported by ABC News

Disney’s statement did not say that the FCC ordered the suspension. The statement also did not eliminate the government-pressure concern, because Disney’s announcement came after Carr publicly warned broadcasters and after major ABC-affiliate owners announced preemptions.

Was Jimmy Kimmel Live! permanently canceled?

No. Disney announced on September 22 that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to ABC on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The return confirms that the September 17 action was an indefinite preemption or suspension, not a permanent cancellation.

ABC News reported the return announcement on September 22, and the Associated Press reported that the program returned to ABC on September 23. The return did not end every local-station dispute immediately: Nexstar and Sinclair announced that they would end their preemptions and resume carrying the show on September 26.

ABC later reported on December 8, 2025, that Kimmel had extended his contract with the network through at least May 2027. The contract extension is further evidence that ABC did not permanently cancel the program in September 2025.

Date Event What the event establishes
September 15, 2025 Kimmel commented on the reaction to Charlie Kirk’s death. The comments preceded the FCC warning, affiliate preemptions, and ABC’s announcement.
September 17, 2025 Carr warned broadcasters; Nexstar and Sinclair announced preemptions; ABC announced an indefinite preemption. The network and affiliate actions followed Carr’s public warning in a compressed sequence.
September 22, 2025 Disney announced that the show would return. The suspension had a stated end date and was not permanent.
September 23, 2025 Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned to ABC. The network resumed the program six days after announcing the indefinite preemption.
September 26, 2025 Nexstar and Sinclair ended their local preemptions. Local affiliate carriage resumed after the network return.
December 8, 2025 ABC reported Kimmel’s contract extension through at least May 2027. Kimmel remained attached to ABC beyond the 2025 dispute.
April 28–May 29, 2026 The FCC began an early-renewal process for Disney’s ABC licenses. The regulatory conflict continued, but the later proceeding does not itself prove that the FCC ordered the 2025 suspension.

How did ABC’s decision differ from the affiliate preemptions?

ABC made the network decision, while Nexstar and Sinclair made separate local-station carriage decisions. That distinction matters because an ABC network return did not automatically end every local affiliate’s preemption.

On September 17, Nexstar and Sinclair announced that their ABC-affiliated stations would not carry the program. On September 26, both companies announced that they were ending those preemptions. According to ABC News’ 2025 report, Nexstar and Sinclair together owned around 60 ABC-affiliate stations at the time. That figure describes the companies’ affiliate footprint; it is not a measure of how many viewers lost access or how many stations preempted a particular episode.

The separate decisions also explain why “ABC canceled Kimmel” is too broad. ABC announced the indefinite preemption at the network level, while affiliate owners separately decided whether local stations would carry the program.

Was the FCC threat a formal order to cancel Jimmy Kimmel?

No formal FCC order requiring ABC to cancel or permanently remove Jimmy Kimmel Live! is established by the sources reviewed here. The record instead shows public regulatory pressure, broadcaster and affiliate decisions, and competing explanations for the suspension.

The FCC regulates licensed broadcast stations, so the agency’s role in licensing and license renewal gave Carr’s warning practical significance for broadcasters. However, the available documentation does not show that the FCC issued a command saying ABC had to take Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air. Carr also denied threatening to revoke ABC’s licenses.

Congressional critics treated the warning as a serious press-freedom and viewpoint-discrimination concern. On September 24, Senator Chris Van Hollen and colleagues sought answers from the broadcasters about the decision to pull the program in an official letter and press release. The congressional inquiry is evidence that lawmakers viewed the episode as more than an ordinary programming dispute, but an inquiry is not a final legal finding. The correspondence is available through the Senate Office of Chris Van Hollen.

What happened to ABC’s broadcast licenses in 2026?

In 2026, the FCC opened an early-renewal process involving Disney’s ABC licenses, creating a new regulatory chapter in the dispute. The FCC Media Bureau said Disney filed renewal applications for eight television licenses on May 28, 2026, after an FCC order called for early renewal.

According to the FCC Media Bureau’s May 29, 2026 public notice, the eight stations ordinarily would not have been due for renewal until 2028 at the earliest. The agency said the proceeding related to an investigation into possible violations of the Communications Act and FCC rules, including unlawful discrimination, and established the schedule for filings and ex parte procedures.

The 2026 proceeding does not prove that the FCC legally forced ABC to suspend the show in 2025. The later license action is connected to the broader ABC, Disney, Trump-administration, and FCC conflict, but the sources reviewed do not establish a final adjudication of motive, causation, or liability.

FCC Chairman Carr defended the early-renewal process as an investigative step and said the agency had reviewed Disney’s responses to information requests before considering the full record. The FCC’s position is set out in its May 7, 2026 letter defending the early-renewal process.

Disney disputed any suggestion that its stations lacked the necessary regulatory qualifications. A Disney spokesperson said:

“ABC and its stations have a long record of operating in full compliance with FCC rules and serving their local communities with trusted news, emergency information, and public-interest programming.”

— Disney spokesperson, in a statement reported by CBS News

As of August 14, 2026, the dossier does not report a final license-revocation decision or a final agency finding that the 2025 Kimmel suspension was compelled by the FCC.

Was Jimmy Kimmel censored by the FCC?

The episode can reasonably be described as a dispute involving government pressure over broadcast speech, but calling it a legally proven case of FCC censorship goes beyond the established record. The FCC warning, the network suspension, the affiliate preemptions, and the later license proceeding are documented; the final legal characterization remains contested.

Three distinctions are important:

  • Pressure versus command: Carr publicly warned broadcasters about further FCC work, but the sources do not establish a formal order directing ABC to remove the program.
  • Corporate action versus agency action: ABC and Disney publicly described the suspension as their own decision based on the tense national moment and the perceived insensitivity of some comments.
  • Contested causation versus documented chronology: Carr’s warning came before the preemptions and ABC’s announcement, but the record does not contain a final adjudication proving exactly how much the warning determined each broadcaster’s decision.

The most accurate description is therefore narrower than either “Trump canceled Jimmy Kimmel” or “ABC acted with no government pressure.” ABC temporarily preempted the show after a sequence that included Carr’s public warning and affiliate decisions, Disney gave its own editorial rationale, the show returned, and the later FCC license proceeding remained unresolved as of August 14, 2026.

Business decision or government pressure: what does the evidence support?

Question Evidence supporting a business or editorial decision Evidence supporting a government-pressure interpretation What remains unproven
What explains ABC’s announcement? Disney said it suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense national moment and because some comments were “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” The suspension followed Carr’s public warning on September 17, 2025. No final finding identifies Disney’s sole or controlling reason.
What explains the local preemptions? Nexstar and Sinclair made separate carriage decisions and later reversed them. Carr specifically warned “these companies” to act on Kimmel or face additional FCC work. The sources do not establish whether either company acted because of legal fear, business judgment, political pressure, or a combination.
Did the FCC order the show removed? ABC and Disney announced the action themselves and restored the show six days later. Carr’s words carried weight because the FCC oversees licensed broadcast stations. No formal FCC cancellation order is shown in the reviewed record.
Does the 2026 license case prove the 2025 cause? The 2026 proceeding occurred later and concerns eight ABC license renewals. The proceeding continued the wider ABC, Disney, Trump-administration, and FCC conflict. The later proceeding does not establish that the FCC compelled the 2025 suspension.
What was the eventual outcome? The show returned on September 23, affiliates resumed carriage on September 26, and Kimmel’s contract ran through at least May 2027. The dispute produced continuing regulatory scrutiny in 2026. The dossier reports no final agency or court resolution of the broader constitutional and regulatory questions.

What is the most accurate answer?

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was not permanently canceled by ABC. ABC announced an indefinite preemption on September 17, 2025, after Kimmel’s comments about reactions to Charlie Kirk’s death and after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned broadcasters to act against Kimmel or face additional FCC work.

Disney restored the program on September 23, Nexstar and Sinclair ended their local preemptions on September 26, and ABC later reported that Kimmel extended his contract through at least May 2027. The 2026 FCC early-renewal proceeding involving eight ABC licenses made the broader conflict more serious, but it does not establish that the FCC formally ordered ABC to pull the show.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: ABC temporarily preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025 amid a documented FCC warning and affiliate pressure, but the show returned six days later and was not permanently canceled. The later 2026 FCC license-renewal proceeding remains separate evidence of continuing regulatory conflict, not proof of a formal order forcing the suspension.
