Matt Lauer is “reconnecting” with “old friends,” according to a friend quoted in a November 29, 2024 PEOPLE exclusive—seven years after NBC fired him—but the report described renewed private contact, not a television comeback. Later coverage through August 14, 2026 still depicts Lauer as largely private, with no verified announcement that he has returned to broadcast journalism.
The headline’s wording is easy to overread. “Reconnecting” referred to texting and phone conversations described by an unnamed source, while the later reporting concerns Lauer’s family life, Hamptons activities, relationship with Shamin Abas, rare public appearances and the continuing absence of a confirmed television project.
Key takeaways
- The headline came from a PEOPLE exclusive syndicated by AOL on November 29, 2024, exactly seven years after NBC fired Matt Lauer.
- “Reconnecting” referred to an unnamed friend’s report that Lauer had resumed texting and speaking with old friends, not to a confirmed television job.
- NBC terminated Lauer on November 29, 2017, after a complaint involving inappropriate sexual behavior; later allegations and Lauer’s denials remain claims that require clear attribution.
- Coverage through August 14, 2026 describes Lauer as private, with family time, occasional public appearances and a reported relationship with Shamin Abas, but no verified broadcast comeback.
- Brooke Nevils’s 416-page memoir, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Tell, was published on February 3, 2026 and offers her first-person account of the events and aftermath.
What does “Matt Lauer Is ‘Reconnecting’ with ‘Old Friends’ 7 Years After TODAY Firing” mean?
The phrase means that a friend told PEOPLE that Lauer had begun restoring contact with friends after a period of withdrawal; it does not mean that Lauer had returned to television, announced a new program or reconciled with every former colleague.
The exact headline came from a PEOPLE report published on November 29, 2024 and syndicated by AOL. The timing supplied the “7 Years After” wording: NBC announced Lauer’s termination on November 29, 2017. The report’s central update concerned his private life, not a new professional appointment.

| Question raised by the headline | What the reporting supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Did Lauer reconnect with old friends? | An unnamed friend told PEOPLE that Lauer had been texting and speaking with old friends over the previous year. | It does not independently verify every private conversation or identify which friends were involved. |
| Did Lauer return to television? | The 2024 report described no confirmed television project, and later coverage continued to describe him as largely private. | “Reconnecting” is not evidence of a broadcast comeback. |
| Did Lauer reconcile with everyone from NBC? | The report described contact with old friends in general terms. | It does not prove reconciliation with every former colleague or with people connected to the allegations. |
| Is Lauer permanently retired? | No verified broadcast role appears in the sources reviewed through August 14, 2026. | The available reporting does not prove that Lauer can never work again. |
What did the 2024 PEOPLE exclusive actually report?
A friend quoted by PEOPLE said Lauer was “actually doing well” and had become more willing to communicate after a period in which he was not talking to old friends. The source described the change this way: “Over the past year, he’s been reconnecting with friends and texting them and talking on the phone.” The statement came from an unnamed source, so it should be treated as attributed private-life reporting rather than an independently verified account.
The syndicated PEOPLE report also said Lauer was spending needed time with his children during their teenage years, supporting their interests and enjoying life with Shamin Abas in the Hamptons. The report said he was less concerned about being seen in public than he had been earlier in the years after leaving NBC. New Zealand and Florida were mentioned in connection with his travel or personal interests, not as proof of a permanent move.
The report’s wording about what Lauer “may” do next was speculation, not a retirement announcement. A headline suggesting that he may never work again should not be rewritten as a fact that Lauer is permanently retired.
What happened to Matt Lauer after NBC fired him?
NBC fired Lauer on November 29, 2017, after the network received a complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. TIME’s contemporaneous report said Lauer had joined NBC’s TODAY as a fill-in in 1992 and became the program’s co-anchor in 1997 before his termination.

NBC chairman Andrew Lack’s public explanation was broader than a single confirmed incident. As reported by TIME in 2017, Lack said: “We were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.” That sentence represents NBC’s stated basis for the employment decision; it is not a judicial finding.
Later reporting identified the former network employee connected to the initial complaint as Brooke Nevils and discussed additional allegations. Those accounts should remain separate from the network’s employment decision. Lauer’s own position also needs separate attribution: in his 2019 open letter, Lauer disputed aspects of the allegations and maintained that his sexual encounters had been consensual. His letter is the primary source for his response, not an independent resolution of the competing accounts.
How should the different accounts be understood?
| Account or report | What it can establish | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| NBC’s 2017 announcement | Why NBC said it terminated Lauer’s employment. | A final legal determination about every allegation. |
| PEOPLE’s unnamed friend | What that source said about Lauer’s social contact and private life in 2024. | Independent confirmation of Lauer’s mental state, friendships or future plans. |
| Lauer’s 2019 open letter | Lauer’s denial of some allegations and his stated account of consensual sexual relationships. | Proof that his version settled the underlying disputes. |
| Nevils’s memoir | Nevils’s first-person account of the encounter and its aftermath. | An adjudicated finding that replaces attribution with certainty. |
| 2025–2026 entertainment reporting | Descriptions of reported sightings, relationship coverage and Lauer’s public profile. | Proof of a television contract or reconciliation with all former colleagues. |
Where is Matt Lauer now?
As of the August 14, 2026 research cutoff, the available reporting places Lauer in a largely private life centered on family, the Hamptons and occasional social appearances rather than a confirmed media job.
The 2024 PEOPLE account said Lauer was focused on his children and his relationship with Shamin Abas. A September 2025 TV Insider retrospective similarly described him as staying out of mainstream media and revisited the earlier report that he was reconnecting with friends in the Hamptons.

The latest relationship report in the supplied coverage was published by E! on March 24, 2026. E! reported that Lauer and Abas were still together and referred to rare public sightings, including an appearance in Bridgehampton in September 2024 and attendance at Don Lemon’s New York wedding earlier in 2024. Those reports describe particular sightings and a reported relationship at the time; they should not be treated as a permanent guarantee about Lauer’s private life.
Is Matt Lauer coming back to television?
There is no verified announcement in the researched sources that Matt Lauer is returning to broadcast journalism or to the TODAY show. Speculation about a comeback has circulated, but speculation is not a confirmed production, contract or employer announcement.
The former TODAY position is also not currently vacant. The Associated Press reported in September 2024 that Craig Melvin had been selected to replace Hoda Kotb in the program’s main 7–9 a.m. hours beginning in January 2025. That AP report establishes the replacement decision; it does not prove that Lauer could never work elsewhere.
The careful conclusion is therefore narrower than “Lauer will never work again”: no verified broadcast comeback appears in the available reporting through August 14, 2026, and no source supplied for this update announces a new television role.

What changed in the coverage from 2024 through 2026?
The story moved from a private-life update to a broader retrospective. The November 2024 PEOPLE report focused on Lauer’s renewed contact with friends and his family life. The September 2025 retrospective revisited that account and the continuing speculation about a comeback. In 2026, coverage added a new first-person source: Brooke Nevils’s memoir.
| Date | Development | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1992 and 1997 | Lauer joined TODAY as a fill-in and later became co-anchor, according to TIME’s career account. | These dates explain the scale of his former broadcast role. |
| November 29, 2017 | NBC terminated Lauer after a complaint involving inappropriate sexual behavior, as reported by TIME. | This is the firing referenced by the later headline. |
| October 9, 2019 | Lauer issued an open letter disputing aspects of the allegations and presenting his account of consensual relationships. | This is Lauer’s stated response, not an independent finding. |
| November 29, 2024 | PEOPLE reported through an unnamed friend that Lauer was reconnecting with old friends and living privately. | This is the source of the headline’s “reconnecting” language. |
| September 24, 2025 | TV Insider published a retrospective describing Lauer’s continued distance from mainstream media and revisiting comeback speculation. | The report supplied later context but did not announce a job. |
| February 3, 2026 | Brooke Nevils’s memoir was published, according to Penguin Random House. | The memoir added Nevils’s first-person account to the public record. |
| March 24, 2026 | E! reported on Lauer’s relationship with Shamin Abas and rare public appearances. | The report provided a current-life update, not evidence of a professional return. |
What is Brooke Nevils’s 2026 memoir about?
Brooke Nevils’s memoir adds her first-person account of the widely reported encounter involving Lauer during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the aftermath, while remaining a memoir rather than an adjudicated finding.
According to Penguin Random House’s official 2026 listing, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Tell is a 416-page book published on February 3, 2026. Readers seeking Nevils’s first-person account can consult Brooke Nevils’ memoir Unspeakable Things; the publisher’s page identifies the book and edition, while current retail availability and pricing should be checked separately.
A February 13, 2026 review in The Atlantic said the memoir revisits Nevils’s account of the 2014 encounter and its aftermath, and reported that Nevils had left television and moved away from New York. Because the book is Nevils’s own account, readers should distinguish memoir testimony from independent reporting, NBC’s employment decision and Lauer’s response.

What is the most accurate answer about Matt Lauer today?
The most accurate answer is that Matt Lauer appears to be living privately and has reportedly begun reconnecting with old friends, while occasional sightings and relationship coverage show that he has not disappeared completely from public view. Nothing in the supplied reporting verifies a return to television.
The “reconnecting” claim belongs to a November 2024 report based on an unnamed friend. The later coverage adds context but does not transform that private-life report into a career announcement. For readers who want to understand the allegations and their aftermath, Nevils’s 2026 memoir provides her account, while Lauer’s 2019 letter provides his response.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Matt Lauer’s reported reconnection with old friends describes renewed private contact, not a television comeback. Through August 14, 2026, later coverage still shows a private life, occasional public appearances and no verified return to broadcast journalism.
