Why did Baldur’s Gate 3 devs call off DLC and step away from D&D?

What reason did Swen Vincke give for canceling the expansion?
Swen Vincke, Larian’s founder and CEO, said the team had explored DLC and even thought about Baldur’s Gate 4, but the work did not feel personally or creatively motivated. A Gamereactor interview report reproduced Vincke’s explanation:
“Because of all the success, the obvious thing would have been to do a DLC, so we started on one. We started even thinking about Baldur’s Gate 4. But we hadn’t had closure on BG3 yet, and to jump forward on something new felt wrong.”

“You could see the team was doing it because everyone felt like we had to do it, but it wasn’t really coming from the heart, and we’re very much a studio from the heart.”

That is the best-supported explanation for why the DLC was canceled. The available reporting does not establish that a particular sales result, licensing fee, revenue-sharing disagreement, Hasbro decision, or contract dispute caused Larian’s choice. It would therefore be misleading to say that Larian “lost the rights” or that Wizards of the Coast blocked the expansion.
What does Larian leaving D&D actually mean?
Larian’s statement means that the studio does not plan to make its next project inside the Dungeons & Dragons 5e rules and setting framework. It does not mean that Baldur’s Gate 3 was unrelated to D&D or that the game’s existing license suddenly disappeared.
Larian’s official support material describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a player-driven role-playing game based on fifth-edition D&D and says the studio received official approval from Wizards of the Coast during development. “We’re going to go our own way – we’re going to break away from D&D and do something new.”
In practical terms, Larian is leaving the licensed D&D framework for its future work, while Wizards of the Coast remains the intellectual-property owner and the party able to authorize future D&D projects. Is Larian making Baldur’s Gate 4?

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 abandoned?
