The band announced the decision on August 2, 2024, after three shows, while continuing to distinguish the end of touring from a formal breakup.
The announcement ended Aerosmith’s regular touring career, but it did not erase the band’s recorded catalog or rule out every isolated appearance. Later performances, official music activity, merchandise, and cultural projects show why “retired from touring” is more accurate than “Aerosmith no longer exists.”
Key takeaways
- Aerosmith announced its retirement from the touring stage on August 2, 2024, after Steven Tyler was unable to fully recover from a serious vocal injury.
- Tyler suffered vocal-cord damage during the September 2023 Peace Out tour, and the band later said he had also fractured his larynx.
- The Peace Out farewell tour ended after three performances, and the remaining dates were canceled rather than completed in February 2025.
- “Retired from touring” is not the same as formally breaking up: Aerosmith has continued music, catalog, merchandise, and other cultural activity.
- Tyler and Joe Perry performed together at a private Janie’s Fund benefit in April 2025, but that appearance was not an Aerosmith tour or a confirmed comeback.
Why did Aerosmith retire from touring?
Aerosmith retired from touring because Steven Tyler could not fully recover from the vocal injury he suffered during the band’s September 2023 Peace Out farewell tour. The band described the injury as damage to Tyler’s vocal cords and a fractured larynx requiring continuing care. Aerosmith announced the decision on August 2, 2024, after Tyler had spent months trying to restore his voice with the help of a medical team.
The band’s announcement made the central issue clear without presenting a separate independent clinical diagnosis. Aerosmith said that “a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” according to the band statement reproduced by Variety.

Aerosmith also described the decision in emotional terms: “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.” The wording is important. The band announced an end to conventional touring, not a formal dissolution of Aerosmith or a declaration that its members could never perform together in any circumstances.
What happened to Steven Tyler’s voice?
Steven Tyler suffered vocal-cord damage while Aerosmith was performing on its Peace Out farewell tour in September 2023. The band subsequently said that Tyler had also fractured his larynx and needed ongoing care. Public reporting establishes the injury and the band’s explanation for the retirement, but it does not provide a basis for adding a more specific medical diagnosis or predicting Tyler’s future health.
The injury forced Aerosmith to postpone the farewell tour after only three shows. The band later concluded that Tyler’s recovery would not allow him to sustain the demands of a conventional multi-city tour. The Guardian’s account of Aerosmith’s retirement announcement records the timing of the injury, the postponement, and the decision to stop touring.

Is Aerosmith breaking up or only stopping touring?
Aerosmith has stopped touring, but the available evidence does not establish that the band has permanently dissolved. The precise description is that Aerosmith retired from the touring stage. The distinction separates the end of a physically demanding, multi-city concert schedule from the band’s continuing recordings, catalog, merchandise, licensing, and occasional appearances.
Aerosmith’s official website continued to publish band news and promote music and merchandise in 2025 and 2026. The official Aerosmith website listed music-related updates including the group’s collaboration with Yungblud and a 2026 legendary edition of the band’s debut album. The cited official site did not announce a resumed touring schedule.

Could Aerosmith perform together again?
Aerosmith could potentially make an isolated appearance, but there is no confirmed return to a conventional tour in the evidence available here. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry performed together at a private Janie’s Fund benefit in April 2025, with additional musicians. That event demonstrated that a limited special performance was possible; it did not constitute an Aerosmith tour or prove that the full band had reunited for regular concerts.
Joe Perry later drew a direct contrast between a possible one-off performance and another long tour. In an interview reported by MusicRadar, Perry said, “Steven just doesn’t want to tour, and he can’t tour,” while discussing the possibility that there might be one Aerosmith show left. A hopeful or hypothetical comment from a band member is weaker evidence than a confirmed concert announcement.
| Possible future activity | Evidence | Current conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Another 40-city or multi-city tour | Tyler’s injury and Perry’s statement that Tyler does not want to and cannot tour. | No supported basis for expecting a conventional tour. |
| One isolated Aerosmith performance | Perry discussed the possibility of one show. | Possible in principle, but not a confirmed event. |
| Tyler and Perry special appearance | They performed together at the April 2025 Janie’s Fund benefit. | Already demonstrated as possible, but not proof of a full reunion. |
| New music, catalog editions, or merchandise | The official website continued listing music and product activity. | Ongoing post-tour activity is supported. |
| A performance using Aerosmith’s music | Virginia National Ballet announced an Aerosmith production for May 2, 2027. | A licensed or inspired cultural project, not an Aerosmith concert. |
What is Aerosmith doing now?
Aerosmith’s post-tour activity centers on its music, recorded catalog, physical releases, merchandise, and continuing cultural influence. The band’s official online presence remained active through 2026, including new music-related updates and a legendary edition of the debut album. Those activities show that Aerosmith’s creative and commercial legacy continues even though the group is no longer maintaining a touring schedule.

The planned Virginia National Ballet production using Aerosmith’s music, announced for May 2, 2027, is another example of that cultural reach. The production should not be listed as an Aerosmith date: it is a separate ballet project built around the band’s music.
How can fans experience Aerosmith after the touring career ended?
Fans can continue with Aerosmith’s recordings, physical editions, official merchandise, and books about the band. For listeners who want a physical reminder of the catalog, an Aerosmith Greatest Hits vinyl edition is the most direct fit. Retail editions, stock, and pricing can change, so a specific pressing should be checked before purchase rather than treated as an official retirement artifact.
The Aerosmith official vinyl catalog lists releases including Get a Grip 2LP, Pump, Permanent Vacation, and 1971: The Road Starts Hear. A Target listing also identifies an Aerosmith Greatest Hits 2LP edition, but retailer availability is subject to change.
For readers who want context rather than only music, two books offer different approaches. Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith, written by Aerosmith with Stephen Davis, presents the band’s autobiography. Geoff Edgers’s Walk This Way, published in 2019, focuses on Aerosmith’s groundbreaking collaboration with Run-DMC and its wider cultural impact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “heartbreaking and difficult” mean in the retirement announcement?
“Heartbreaking and difficult” describes Aerosmith’s characterization of the decision to stop touring after Tyler’s recovery did not reach the level required for the band’s planned concerts. The phrase came from the band’s own statement, not from an outside commentator. Aerosmith also called the decision necessary, presenting the retirement as a response to Tyler’s condition rather than a routine scheduling choice.
The announcement therefore contains two ideas that should be kept together: Aerosmith’s touring career ended, and the band’s broader identity did not necessarily disappear. The most accurate summary is that Tyler’s injury ended Aerosmith’s regular touring era while the group’s recorded music, products, special appearances, and influence continued.
