Who is in the confirmed Sunrise on the Reaping film cast?
The confirmed actor-character pairings currently center on Haymitch, his District 12 connections, and younger versions of familiar Capitol figures. The following assignments have been announced; they should not be confused with the actors who played the older versions in the original film series.
| Actor | Character | Character function | Connection to Haymitch or the Games |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joseph Zada | Haymitch Abernathy | District 12 protagonist and tribute | The sixteen-year-old central character in the 50th Hunger Games |
| Whitney Peak | Lenore Dove | Haymitch’s girlfriend | A major relationship outside the arena |
| Mckenna Grace | Maysilee Donner | District 12 tribute | A member of Haymitch’s district-level group during the Second Quarter Quell |
| Elle Fanning | Effie Trinket | Capitol escort | A younger version of the District 12 escort known from the original trilogy |
| Ralph Fiennes | President Coriolanus Snow | Capitol political leader | A younger-era version of the future president |
| Kieran Culkin | Caesar Flickerman | Televised Hunger Games host | The broadcaster who helps turn the Games into public spectacle |
| Jesse Plemons | Plutarch Heavensbee | Capitol insider and Games figure | A younger version of the character known from the original trilogy |
Variety reported the Haymitch, Lenore Dove, and major legacy-character casting announcements in its coverage of the film’s production and first look, including the initial Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak casting report.
Who plays young Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping?
Joseph Zada plays young Haymitch Abernathy in Sunrise on the Reaping. The role requires a substantially younger version of the character than the damaged mentor audiences know from the original trilogy: the novel begins with Haymitch at sixteen, before the events that define his later life.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Haymitch is the bridge between the prequel and the original story. In the earlier timeline, Haymitch is a District 12 tribute whose intelligence, courage, attachments, and resistance to Capitol control shape the narrative. In the original trilogy, he is Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s mentor.
Who is Lenore Dove?
Lenore Dove is Haymitch’s girlfriend, played by Whitney Peak in the film. Lenore belongs to the story’s world outside the arena and gives Haymitch a personal relationship that is separate from his identity as a tribute.
Lenore is therefore a new central figure in the prequel rather than a younger version of a character from the original film series. Her relationship with Haymitch is part of the emotional stakes surrounding his selection for the Second Quarter Quell.

Who plays Maysilee Donner?
Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, a District 12 tribute in the 50th Hunger Games. Maysilee is important to the core character group because she enters the same doubled-tribute Games structure as Haymitch and belongs to his district-level circle.
Maysilee is also distinct from the Capitol characters played by Fanning, Fiennes, Culkin, and Plemons: her role is tied directly to the tribute experience and the arena storyline.
Why does the Second Quarter Quell change the cast structure?
The Second Quarter Quell changes the cast structure because the Capitol requires each district to send twice its usual number of tributes. The 50th Hunger Games consequently has a larger tribute group than an ordinary Games, making Haymitch’s district relationships and the wider field of competitors central to the story.
| Story group | What the group does | Known figures | Primary setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| District 12 tributes | Provides Haymitch’s immediate community inside the Games | Haymitch Abernathy and Maysilee Donner | District 12 and the arena |
| Other tributes | Creates the expanded competitive field required by the Second Quarter Quell | Additional competitors from the districts; individual film assignments remain incomplete | The arena |
| Loved ones and personal connections | Shows what Haymitch stands to lose outside the Games | Lenore Dove | District 12 and the world beyond the arena |
| Capitol officials and broadcasters | Organizes, presents, controls, and televises the Games | Effie Trinket, President Snow, Caesar Flickerman, and Plutarch Heavensbee | The Capitol and the televised Games |
The expanded-tribute premise is part of the novel’s basic setup, not a minor background detail. The novel’s character guide and story overview identify Haymitch as a sixteen-year-old District 12 tribute and place the surrounding characters within the Second Quarter Quell’s larger cast.
Which Sunrise on the Reaping characters are younger versions of familiar figures?
Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, Kieran Culkin, and Jesse Plemons play younger-era versions of legacy characters from the wider Hunger Games story. The film’s casting uses familiar names while moving them back to the period of Haymitch’s Games.

The available source material does not establish every supporting performer’s character assignment with enough primary-source confidence. Those roles are therefore best treated as unverified rather than matched to characters by guesswork.

How does Sunrise on the Reaping fit into the Hunger Games timeline?
Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel set 24 years before The Hunger Games. The story begins on the morning of Haymitch’s selection for the 50th Hunger Games, also called the Second Quarter Quell, long before Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become tributes.
| Timeline point | What happens | Relevance to this story |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrise on the Reaping | Haymitch is sixteen and selected for the 50th Hunger Games | Primary setting of the novel and announced film |
| The Hunger Games | Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark enter the 74th Hunger Games | Later story in which Haymitch serves as their mentor |
The earlier setting explains why the film includes younger versions of Effie, Snow, Caesar, and Plutarch while introducing new figures such as Lenore Dove. The prequel is designed to expand Haymitch’s history rather than retell Katniss’s Games.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is an announced film adaptation of Collins’s novel, with a scheduled North American theatrical release on November 20, 2026. In Lionsgate’s 2024 announcement, Suzanne Collins said: “From the beginning, Lionsgate has been a wonderful home and partner for the Hunger Games franchise, and I’m very excited to be collaborating with Adam and the team as we bring this next story to theaters in 2026.” The statement is reproduced in Lionsgate’s official press release.
Scholastic reported that more than 1.5 million World English copies of the novel sold during its first week of publication in 2025. Scholastic’s franchise press material also lists more than 100 million copies of the five Hunger Games books in print and digital formats worldwide, using figures dated to 2025 and 2026 respectively. What should readers remember about the cast?
The most important casting answer is Joseph Zada as young Haymitch Abernathy. Whitney Peak’s Lenore Dove and Mckenna Grace’s Maysilee Donner form the key announced District 12 connections, while Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, Kieran Culkin, and Jesse Plemons bring younger versions of Effie, Snow, Caesar, and Plutarch into the prequel timeline.
The film’s wider cast is announced, but several supporting character assignments remain unverified. Until official sources identify those roles, a reliable cast guide should name the performers without presenting speculation as fact.
