Serena and Venus Williams’ sister who was killed was Yetunde Price, their older maternal half-sister. Price was fatally shot in Compton, California, shortly after midnight on September 14, 2003. She was 31.
Price’s death is often mentioned in connection with the Williams sisters, but her own life deserves attention. She was a registered nurse, owned a beauty salon, was the mother of three children, and sometimes worked as a personal assistant to Venus and Serena. Family accounts and contemporary reporting portrayed her as an independent, nurturing older sister—not merely as a relative of two famous tennis players.
Who was Yetunde Price?
Yetunde Price was one of Oracene Price’s daughters from an earlier relationship. That made her the older maternal half-sister of Venus and Serena Williams. The sisters shared a close family connection, and Price was involved in their lives both personally and practically.

Before her death, Price built a life of her own. She trained and worked as a registered nurse, operated a beauty salon, and raised three children. She also helped Venus and Serena at times as a personal assistant while their tennis careers were becoming increasingly demanding.
Those details matter because descriptions of Price can too easily reduce her identity to “the Williams sisters’ sister.” She was a working professional, business owner, mother, and older sibling whose life extended well beyond the family’s fame.
What happened to Yetunde Price?
Price was in an SUV with an acquaintance or boyfriend in Compton shortly after midnight on September 14, 2003, when a confrontation took place near a residence that authorities associated with suspected gang activity. She was struck in the head by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where she died.
Initial reports described an investigation involving suspected gang activity, but early accounts were not consistent about the motive, the people involved, or the exact sequence of events. The most responsible summary is that Price was killed during a shooting in Compton and that investigators examined the possibility that the confrontation was connected to gang-related activity.

It is important not to turn those early investigative suspicions into established facts. Details about a supposed drug-house connection, gang rivalry, or the precise reason for the shooting should not be presented as proven unless supported by a primary court or law-enforcement record.
The legal aftermath
Investigators arrested suspects and pursued a murder case after Price’s death. However, the available source material does not provide a sufficiently current primary court or corrections record to establish every later development with confidence.
For that reason, claims about a conviction, sentence, parole, release, or the shooter’s current status should be treated cautiously unless verified through current California court or corrections records. Repeating an old news account as though it were a complete account of the case can give readers a misleading impression of what is legally established today.
How did her death affect the Williams family?
Price was killed while Venus and Serena were already among the most visible athletes in professional tennis. Her death became part of the personal hardship surrounding Serena’s rise and affected the wider Williams family. Later coverage also described the family returning to Compton for a memorial community project.

That loss should not be used to make unsupported claims about a particular tournament result, ranking, injury, or career decline. There is no sound basis for saying that Price’s death alone permanently derailed either sister’s athletic career. What can be said is that the tragedy became part of the family’s public story during an important period in both players’ lives.
The Yetunde Price Resource Center
Venus and Serena honored their sister’s memory in 2016 by establishing the Yetunde Price Resource Center through their philanthropic work. The center focuses on people affected by violence and describes its work in terms of trauma-informed healing, resiliency, and access to support.
Its stated mission includes helping people affected directly or indirectly by violence find existing services and supporting the development of new resources where help is unavailable. That emphasis gives Price’s legacy a constructive dimension: her name is associated not only with the violence that ended her life, but also with efforts to help families and communities recover from violence.
Events connected with the center have brought attention and funding to that work. The organization’s purpose also reflects the family’s experience without suggesting that one public memorial project can resolve the larger problems of violence, trauma, and unequal access to care.

Remembering Yetunde Price as a person
Yetunde Price was 31 when she died, leaving three children and a family that was already living under intense public attention. The clearest account of her life is therefore not simply that she was Serena and Venus Williams’ sister. She was a nurse, salon owner, mother, assistant, and older maternal half-sister whose death had a lasting effect on the people who knew her.
The resource center created in her honor keeps that memory connected to practical support for people affected by violence. That is a more complete legacy than the details of the shooting alone: it remembers Price’s life while seeking to help others endure circumstances like those that changed her family forever.
