Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, died at age 69 on Monday, December 2, 2024, according to a published family obituary. Eminem’s longtime representative, Dennis Dennehy, confirmed her death to reporters the following day.

The available national reports did not disclose a confirmed cause of death. They said Nelson had battled lung cancer, but that detail should not be presented as proof that lung cancer was the official cause.

Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, died at age 69 on Monday, December 2, 2024, according to a published family obituary. Dennis Dennehy, Eminem’s longtime representative, confirmed her death to reporters by email on December 3.

National reports said Nelson had battled lung cancer, but they did not identify a confirmed cause of death. Unless the family or another authoritative source later provides that information, it is more accurate to say that she died after a reported battle with lung cancer—not that lung cancer was definitively established as the cause.

Who was Debbie Nelson?

Nelson was born on January 6, 1955, at Smoky Hill Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas, according to her family obituary. She later lived in St. Joseph, Missouri, before residing in Clinton Township, Michigan.

The obituary identified her as Debbie Nelson (Mathers) and listed Marshall Mathers III—Eminem’s legal name—and Nathan K. Mathers as her sons. She is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Outside her connection to Eminem, the obituary described Nelson as a beautician licensed in both Missouri and Michigan, a former business owner, and a former foster parent. It also said she traveled during retirement. These details come from the family’s obituary rather than from an independently reported biography.

Her complicated relationship with Eminem

Nelson’s relationship with her son became part of Eminem’s public story after he rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Associated Press and CBS/AP described the relationship as publicly fraught, with Eminem’s lyrics portraying anger, resentment, and conflict within his family.

“Cleaning Out My Closet,” released in 2002, became one of the clearest examples of Eminem addressing his mother in highly confrontational terms. Reports have also connected the family history to the “mom’s spaghetti” image in “Lose Yourself,” the song associated with the film 8 Mile. That reference became a lasting part of Eminem’s pop-cultural mythology, even as the song itself focuses on ambition, pressure, and performance.

The songs made Nelson’s private life a subject of public discussion. They also ensured that she would often be described through the lens of Eminem’s version of their relationship, rather than solely through her own work and family life.

Nelson pursued defamation lawsuits

According to AP and CBS/AP reporting, Nelson brought and settled two defamation lawsuits related to statements Eminem made about her in magazines and on radio talk shows.

Coverage of Nelson’s memoir said she presented at least one legal action as connected to protecting her home from foreclosure. That explanation should be treated as Nelson’s account of her motivation, not as an independently established conclusion about the litigation.

She published her own account of the family history

Nelson published My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem: Setting the Record Straight on My Life as Eminem’s Mother, a memoir offering her perspective on Eminem’s childhood, his rise to fame, and their difficult relationship. Publisher’s Weekly described the book as a detailed and defensive account. The publisher also said it included rare photographs of Nelson and her son.

Readers looking for Nelson’s side of the story can seek out Debbie Nelson’s memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. It is important to read the book as a firsthand memoir—not as a neutral, independently verified biography. Its claims represent Nelson’s recollections and arguments, while other aspects of the family history have been reported through Eminem’s music and public statements.

Bibliographic records identify multiple editions. The Phoenix Books hardcover is listed with ISBN 9781597775960. Google Books catalogs a 2008 Kings Road Publishing edition under ISBN 184454673X and ISBN 9781844546732. Because publication details, length, and availability can differ by edition and country, readers should check the ISBN before ordering.

A death reported without a public cause

The available national reports confirmed Nelson’s death and age but did not provide a specific cause of death. The exact date—December 2, 2024—comes from the family obituary. The reports’ reference to a lung-cancer battle provides context, but it does not resolve the distinction between an illness she experienced and an officially confirmed cause of death.

Her obituary places the emphasis back on her life: a mother, grandmother, beautician, business owner, foster parent, and author whose relationship with one of the world’s most famous rappers became inseparable from his public mythology. Eminem’s private response should not be assumed in the absence of a verified statement from him, his family, or his representative.
