Sarah Dzafce was stripped of the Miss Finland title on December 11, 2025, after a social-media image showing her pulling the corners of her eyes into a slanted shape was widely criticized as an anti-Asian, racist gesture. The image was accompanied by Finnish wording reported in translation as referring to “eating with a Chinese person.” Dzafce apologized, and the Miss Finland Organization said racism and discriminatory behavior were incompatible with its standards. First runner-up Tara Lehtonen succeeded her.

What happened in the image

The photograph circulated online in late November and early December, including on the Finnish discussion platform Jodel. It showed Dzafce using her fingers to pull the outer corners of her eyes sideways. Viewers widely interpreted the expression as a stereotype mocking East Asian people.

Reports translated the accompanying Finnish text as “eating with a Chinese person,” or words to that effect. The combination of the gesture and caption drove the public backlash. The available reporting establishes how the image was received and why it caused controversy; it does not establish a court finding or a separate legal determination that Dzafce had committed a crime.

Dzafce initially said that she had been rubbing or stretching her eyes because of a severe headache. That was her explanation for the image and should not be treated as an independently verified account of what the gesture meant.

Dzafce apologized before losing the crown

On December 8, the Associated Press reported that Dzafce had apologized and said she had not intended to hurt anyone. She apologized again at the December 11 press conference, including to people in the Asian community.

Some criticism focused on the wording of the initial apology, which was reported as emphasizing the hurt caused without explicitly identifying the eye-stretching gesture itself. In a later interview, Dzafce acknowledged the responsibility that comes with holding a highly visible public position. She also said the incident had prompted a broader discussion about the expectations placed on Miss Finland and who determines the boundaries of acceptable conduct for public figures.

Why the Miss Finland Organization revoked the title

The Miss Finland Organization announced on December 10 that it would meet with Dzafce. The following day, it said she would be relieved of the title. The decision was presented as an organizational and values-based judgment about suitability for the role—not as a criminal or judicial ruling.

The organization said it did not accept racism or discriminatory behavior in any form. It identified respect, equality, responsibility, and human dignity as guiding principles and described them as non-negotiable. Chief executive Sunneva Sjögren called the title removal exceptional but necessary. The organization also apologized for its part in the situation and said it had consulted experts before taking the step.

That distinction matters. A pageant organization can set standards for its titleholders and decide that a contestant no longer represents those standards. Such a decision is different from a government or court formally determining that a person violated criminal law.

Tara Lehtonen became Miss Finland

Dzafce had won the Miss Finland competition in Espoo on September 6, 2025. Tara Lehtonen was named first runner-up, while Julianna Kauhaniemi placed second runner-up.

After Dzafce’s removal, Lehtonen assumed the national title and was presented as the new Miss Finland. The succession also clarifies the difference between the national pageant title and the international competition: Dzafce had represented Finland at the 2025 Miss Universe pageant before the Miss Finland title was revoked. The controversy concerned her status as Miss Finland, or Miss Suomi, rather than a reported change to the earlier international event.

The political controversy came afterward

The pageant decision was followed by a separate political backlash. Between December 12 and 16, Finns Party politicians Juho Eerola, Kaisa Garedew, and Member of the European Parliament Sebastian Tynkkynen posted images repeating the same eye-stretching gesture.

Coalition partners and parliamentary group leaders condemned those posts as offensive and irresponsible. They also warned that the images could damage Finland’s international reputation. It is important not to merge the two events: Dzafce’s image led to the Miss Finland Organization’s decision on December 11, while the politicians’ later posts created a new controversy involving government-party figures.

Diplomatic fallout for Finland

The politicians’ posts drew criticism from Asian audiences and increased pressure on Finland’s government. By December 20, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported that Prime Minister Petteri Orpo had apologized through Finnish diplomatic channels to Japan, South Korea, and China for the subsequent political posts.

The reported diplomatic apologies were connected to the politicians’ repeated gestures—not to a government decision revoking Dzafce’s pageant title. The episode therefore developed along two tracks: an internal pageant decision based on the organization’s representation standards, and a wider political and diplomatic dispute over conduct by members of government-aligned parties.

What the episode shows about public representation

The Miss Finland title is not only a competition result. Its holder is also expected to represent the pageant organization and, in public appearances, a national image. That helps explain why the organization treated the controversy as a question of responsibility and suitability rather than simply as a private social-media mistake.

The case also illustrates how quickly an image can move from a personal account or online discussion forum into a national controversy. Once a titleholder’s post is viewed as a racial stereotype, an apology may not resolve the question of whether the person can continue representing the organization. The organization’s response, the succession by the first runner-up, and the later political posts each became part of the story—but they should be assessed as distinct decisions and events.

Based on the reporting available through December 20, 2025, the confirmed outcome is that Sarah Dzafce lost the Miss Finland title on December 11 and Tara Lehtonen became her successor. The wider political and diplomatic consequences followed after that decision.
