Spotify’s direct messages are back under a new in-app home called Messages. To find them, open the Spotify mobile app, tap your profile picture, and scroll to Messages. From there, you can open a conversation, review a message request, or tap New message to start chatting.
Where to find Spotify DMs
Spotify’s direct messages are available under a feature called Messages. To find them, open the Spotify mobile app, tap your profile picture, and scroll down to Messages. Tap an existing conversation or message request. Choose Show all if you want to see more conversations.
Spotify’s current instructions describe Messages as a mobile-app feature. Do not assume that the same inbox is available in the Spotify desktop app or web player.
How to start a new Spotify message
- Open Spotify on an iPhone or Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Scroll to Messages.
- Tap New message.
- Choose a suggested friend or family member and send a message.
You can also begin a conversation while sharing something you are listening to. Tap Share on a song, playlist, album, audiobook, podcast episode, artist page, live event, or countdown page. Select a suggested recipient, or use an invite-link option. Spotify says you can select up to 10 people when sharing content.

How Spotify message requests work
The first message to someone does not necessarily appear as a normal open chat. When you message a person for the first time—or share Spotify content with that person for the first time—the recipient receives a message request.
The recipient can accept, block, or delete the request. After accepting it, the participants can exchange text, emoji reactions, and Spotify content. This explains why a message may have been sent successfully even though the recipient cannot yet see a regular conversation in their inbox.
Who appears in the recipient suggestions?
Spotify may suggest people with whom you have previously:
- Shared Spotify content
- Created a Blend or collaborative playlist
- Joined a Jam
- Shared a Spotify Family or Duo plan
If the person you want is not listed, Spotify says you can send the content’s link through another app. After the recipient opens it, that person may begin appearing in Spotify’s suggestion list.

What can you share in Spotify Messages?
Messages is designed for sharing Spotify items inside the listening app rather than switching immediately to another messaging service. Supported content includes:
- Songs
- Playlists
- Albums
- Audiobooks
- Podcast episodes
- Artists
- Live events
- Countdown pages
You can share an item from its Share menu, select one or more suggested contacts, and send it directly into a conversation.
How to create a Spotify group chat
Spotify’s newer Messages features include group conversations for friends and family. A group can include up to 10 friends and family members.

- Tap your profile picture in the Spotify mobile app.
- Scroll to Messages.
- Tap Create group.
- Choose people from the suggested list.
- Tap Create group again to confirm.
You can also create a group from a content-sharing screen by selecting multiple friends before sending the song, playlist, or other Spotify item. Spotify identifies the person who creates the group as its admin and distinguishes between admins, participants, pending members, and blocked members.

Listening activity
Listening activity can show what a connected friend or family member is currently listening to. If that person is not listening at that moment, Spotify may show their most recently played song instead.
The feature is limited to people already connected through Messages and is opt-in. You can turn off your own activity sharing. Spotify later said that Listening activity was also available inside group messaging. When activity sharing is enabled, your real-time listening status may be shared with that group by default when you join; controls are available in the group-chat settings.
Request to Jam
Request to Jam lets a Spotify Premium user send a remote Jam invitation from a Messages conversation. If the recipient accepts, participants can add tracks to a shared queue and listen together.
Spotify said the feature was rolling out on iOS and Android in markets where Messages is enabled, with broad availability in those markets targeted for early February 2026. Availability can therefore depend on the account, country, operating system, and rollout status.

If you cannot find Messages, work through these checks:
- Use the mobile app: Spotify’s documented location is the profile-picture menu in the iOS or Android app, not necessarily the desktop app or web player.
- Update Spotify: Check the App Store or Google Play and install any available Spotify update. Updating is a sensible troubleshooting step, but it is not a guaranteed way to make a region-limited feature appear.
- Check the account age requirement: Spotify’s launch information said users had to be at least 16 years old. Applicable requirements may also depend on local rules and account settings.
- Check market availability: Messages initially rolled out to Free and Premium users in select markets. Spotify’s later documentation refers to “Messages-enabled markets,” so the feature is not necessarily available everywhere.
- Look in the right place: Open your profile-picture menu and scroll to Messages. Do not check only the Share screen; sharing is an additional way to start a conversation.
If all of those conditions appear to be satisfied and Messages is still absent, the feature may not yet be enabled for your account or location.

How to turn off Messages or block someone
To opt out of Messages, open Spotify and go to:
Profile picture > Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Social features > Messages
Spotify also lets you block someone from inside a chat or from that person’s profile. A block is separate from deleting a conversation or declining a message request.
Are Spotify Messages private?
Spotify describes Messages as private between the participants, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Spotify has separately described encryption in transit and at rest and said that proactive detection technology may scan messages for certain unlawful or harmful content. The practical takeaway is that Spotify provides platform-level privacy and security protections, but Messages should not be treated like an end-to-end encrypted messaging service.
Be careful about sending sensitive personal information through the feature, particularly in group conversations or to people you do not know well.
What happens when you delete a chat?
You can delete an individual chat from your own Messages view. Spotify says this does not notify the other participant and does not remove the conversation from that person’s view. The conversation can reappear if you message each other again.
You can delete received messages for yourself. Spotify’s current support information also says that a sender can delete the last four sent messages from everyone’s view. Deleting your local chat and deleting sent messages for everyone are therefore different actions.
