Their lives took distinctly different directions—Kara through television, film, and philanthropy; Edward Jr. through law and Connecticut politics; and Patrick through elected office and mental-health advocacy.
Who were Ted and Joan Kennedy’s three children?
Ted Kennedy and Virginia Joan Bennett Kennedy had three children: Kara Anne Kennedy, Edward Moore Kennedy Jr., and Patrick Joseph Kennedy. Kara, born in 1960, worked mainly in television, film, and philanthropy. Edward Jr., born in 1961, became a lawyer and entered Connecticut politics after losing part of his leg to bone cancer as a child. Patrick, born in 1967, pursued the family’s most direct political path, serving in the Rhode Island legislature and the U.S. House before becoming a prominent mental-health and addiction-policy advocate.
Their lives show three different responses to the Kennedy name: media and charitable work, law and state politics, and federal policymaking followed by national advocacy.
Ted and Joan Kennedy’s family life
Ted Kennedy married Virginia Joan Bennett—usually known as Joan—in 1958. Their three children were born during a period when Ted was becoming one of the most visible members of the Kennedy political family:

Ted represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate for 47 years. His legislative career became closely associated with civil rights, health care, education, and immigration. That public role meant his children grew up under unusually intense attention, but they did not all seek the same kind of public life.
Ted and Joan divorced in 1982 after 24 years of marriage. Ted later married Victoria Reggie Kennedy. They had no additional biological children together, although Ted became stepfather to Victoria’s two children.
Joan’s own identity was broader than the often-repeated description of her as Ted Kennedy’s first wife. She was a classically trained pianist who performed with major orchestras for charitable causes and wrote The Joy of Classical Music. Her alcoholism and mental-health difficulties later became part of the public record, as did arrangements involving her care. Those subjects are relevant to the family’s later history, but they should be treated with care rather than reduced to sensational details.
Kara Anne Kennedy
Career in television, film, and philanthropy
Kara Kennedy was Ted and Joan’s oldest child and their only daughter. She graduated from Tufts University and began working in television production, including at WBZ-TV’s Evening Magazine. She later worked as a filmmaker and produced videos for Very Special Arts, the nonprofit founded by her aunt Jean Kennedy Smith.

Much of Kara’s work was behind the camera. That career suited the more private and less overtly political public role she generally maintained compared with some other members of the Kennedy family. Her professional life was not simply an extension of her father’s Senate career: it developed through broadcasting, film production, and nonprofit communications.
Kara also served or worked with several charitable and educational organizations. Her affiliations included the National Advisory Board of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and the board of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
In August 2009, Kara accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of her father. Ted was too ill to attend the ceremony.

Kara’s cancer diagnosis and later death
In 2002, Kara was diagnosed with lung cancer and initially received a grim prognosis. She underwent surgery to remove part of her lung and chemotherapy. Later accounts described her as having recovered and remaining active.

Contemporary reports described an apparent heart attack after she completed a workout at a health club. She was the mother of two children, Grace and Max, and coverage of her death emphasized her devotion to them.
It is important not to state that her earlier cancer treatment caused her death. Any connection between the treatment and the apparent heart attack was speculative in the reporting available for this account.
Edward Moore Kennedy Jr.
Childhood illness and legal career
Edward Moore Kennedy Jr., often called Ted Jr., was born in 1961. He became a lawyer and developed a public life in Connecticut.
When he was 12, Edward Jr. lost part of his right leg to bone cancer. That experience became an important part of his public identity and informed his interest in disability-related issues. It is more accurate, however, to describe it as one element of his life than to turn his biography into a simplified story about “overcoming adversity.”
Connecticut political career
Edward Jr. entered electoral politics in Connecticut. The state’s official election-history database records his 2016 election to the Connecticut State Senate from District 12, where he received 60 percent of the vote.
That verified election record should not be confused with confirmation that he currently holds public office. His present professional status can change, and a current official biography would need to be checked before making a present-tense claim.

Involvement in Joan Kennedy’s care
Edward Jr. also became involved in arrangements for his mother’s later care. The Associated Press reported that he obtained a court-ordered guardianship for Joan Kennedy. Because this concerns a family member’s health and personal circumstances, the useful point is the existence of that reported legal arrangement—not unverified speculation about private medical or financial details.
Patrick Joseph Kennedy
Rhode Island and congressional politics
Patrick Joseph Kennedy was the youngest of Ted and Joan’s three children, born in 1967. He entered electoral politics earlier and more directly than his siblings.
At age 21, Patrick won election to the Rhode Island House of Representatives. He later represented Rhode Island’s First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 through 2011. Congressional records identify him as a Democrat who served from the 104th through the 111th Congresses.
Mental-health and addiction policy
Patrick’s signature public issue became mental health and addiction care. His official biography identifies him as the lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which was signed into law on October 3, 2008.
The law sought to prevent health-insurance plans from applying more restrictive coverage limits to mental-health and substance-use treatment than to comparable medical care. In practical terms, parity policy addresses unequal treatment limits, financial requirements, and coverage rules—not merely whether a plan lists mental-health services among its benefits.
Patrick’s advocacy was shaped by personal experience as well as public policy. His work helped bring mental illness and addiction into mainstream legislative discussion, while also focusing attention on whether parity protections were actually implemented.

After leaving Congress, Patrick founded The Kennedy Forum in 2013. The organization works on mental-health and addiction-care policy, health equity, parity implementation, and evidence-based treatment. Patrick’s post-Congress work is therefore best understood as national behavioral-health advocacy, not simply as a continuation of his career as a former politician.

He also co-authored A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey Through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction. The book combines personal narrative with a policy argument for improving mental-health and addiction care, making it the most directly relevant further reading for anyone interested in Patrick’s life and public work.

| Sibling | Primary public path | Distinguishing work |
|---|---|---|
| Kara Kennedy | Television, film, and nonprofit work | Behind-the-camera production, charitable organizations, and work connected with Kennedy educational institutions |
| Edward Kennedy Jr. | Law and Connecticut politics | Public life shaped in part by his childhood cancer and limb loss; elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 2016 |
| Patrick Kennedy | Rhode Island and federal politics, followed by advocacy | Mental-health and addiction policy, including the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and The Kennedy Forum |
The contrast matters because the three children did not simply reproduce their father’s career. Kara worked largely through media, film, and charitable production. Edward Jr. combined a legal career with disability-related public visibility and state politics. Patrick entered electoral politics at a young age, then concentrated his national work on mental-health and addiction policy.
All three inherited a famous surname, but public service took different forms in their lives. Kara’s contribution was often organizational and creative; Edward Jr.’s was connected to law, disability, and state government; Patrick’s became legislative and national in scope.
Further reading about the family
Readers looking for a broader account of the Kennedy family may want to begin with The Kennedy Heirs by J. Randy Taraborrelli. It places Ted and Joan’s family within the story of later Kennedy generations. It is a Kennedy-family history, not a dedicated biography of Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick.
Ted Kennedy’s memoir, True Compass: A Memoir, offers additional family context from the father’s perspective, alongside his account of public life, illness, and fatherhood. It is not exclusively about his three children, so it works best as a companion to—rather than a replacement for—a focused family biography.
For Patrick Kennedy’s personal and policy story, A Common Struggle is the most directly relevant choice. It connects his experiences to the broader debate over mental illness, addiction, insurance parity, and access to treatment.
