Milly Alcock, who became widely known as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, was confirmed as DC’s new Supergirl in January 2024. She plays Kara Zor-El in the released 2026 feature film Supergirl.
From Young Rhaenyra to Kara Zor-El
Milly Alcock’s casting connected two very different fantasy franchises. She became widely recognized as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon; in January 2024, she was confirmed as the new live-action Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, for DC Studios.
The comparison is worth stating precisely: Alcock played the younger Rhaenyra. After House of the Dragon’s time jump, the older version of the character was portrayed by another actor. Her credit is therefore best described as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, rather than as the show’s sole or ongoing Rhaenyra.
When was Milly Alcock cast as Supergirl?
Alcock’s casting was publicly confirmed on January 29–30, 2024. The announcement identified her as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and positioned her as the lead of DC’s planned feature film.

Why the casting attracted attention
The casting gave DC a performer with a high-profile television role but left room for a substantially different performance. In House of the Dragon, Alcock played a young royal navigating dynastic conflict and political danger. As Supergirl, she plays Kara Zor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin and the central character of a DC Studios feature.
The headline therefore captured more than a simple casting change. It marked Alcock’s move from the younger version of a Targaryen princess to a leading role in a major superhero film, while also introducing DC audiences to its new cinematic Supergirl.
