NYT Connections #775 was released on Friday, July 25, 2025. The easiest way into this puzzle is to spot the secrecy words: MUM, PRIVATE, QUIET and SECRET. From there, the four two-letter entries form state abbreviations, the baseball terms fall into place, and the remaining words complete phrases beginning with “QUEEN.”

Hints for Connections #775

  1. One group describes keeping information quiet or confidential.
  2. Four entries are two-letter abbreviations for U.S. states.
  3. Four entries can be heard as calls or rulings in baseball.
  4. The final four entries complete familiar phrases that begin with QUEEN.

The 16 words in the July 25 Connections puzzle

Here is the complete grid for puzzle #775:

MUM   PRIVATE   QUIET   SECRET
IN   MA   OH   OK
BALL   FAIR   FOUL   OUT
BED   BEE   MARY   MOTHER

Connections #775 answers

Yellow: HUSH-HUSH

MUM, PRIVATE, QUIET, SECRET

Each word relates to silence, secrecy or confidentiality. “Mum” is the slightly less obvious entry: in the expression “keep mum,” it means to keep quiet or say nothing. “Private,” “quiet” and “secret” make the shared meaning easier to see once MUM is considered in that phrase-level sense.

Green: STATE ABBREVIATIONS

IN, MA, OH, OK

  • IN — Indiana
  • MA — Massachusetts
  • OH — Ohio
  • OK — Oklahoma

These compact entries are easy to overlook because they also resemble ordinary words, interjections or conversational fragments. Reading them as postal-style state abbreviations reveals the second group.

Blue: BASEBALL CALLS

BALL, FAIR, FOUL, OUT

These are familiar baseball calls or game-status terms. An umpire can call a ball or an out, while fair and foul describe whether a batted ball lands within the legal boundaries of the field. FAIR and FOUL are especially useful as a pair, but the full group depends on recognizing the baseball context.

Purple: QUEEN _____

BED, BEE, MARY, MOTHER

Complete each phrase with “queen”:

  • queen bed
  • Queen Bee
  • Queen Mary
  • Queen Mother

This is the puzzle’s phrase-completion category. It is less immediately visible than a group based on one subject, so it becomes clear mainly after the other twelve words have been removed.

The main trap: MUM, MA and MOTHER

The most tempting false connection is between MUM, MA and MOTHER. All three can suggest a family or mother-related theme, but they belong to three different official groups:

  • MUM belongs with the HUSH-HUSH words.
  • MA is the abbreviation for Massachusetts.
  • MOTHER completes “Queen Mother.”

That leaves no fourth word for a convincing mother-themed group. As with many Connections boards, the safest approach is to test whether a proposed category produces exactly four strong entries and leaves a clean remainder—not merely whether several words share a loose association.

A practical solving order

  1. Start with the obvious semantic group. MUM, PRIVATE, QUIET and SECRET have the clearest overlap when MUM is read as “keep mum.”
  2. Inspect the short words together. IN, MA, OH and OK look unusual beside the longer entries. Consider whether they are abbreviations rather than ordinary vocabulary.
  3. Group the baseball language. BALL, FAIR, FOUL and OUT form a coherent set of calls and rulings.
  4. Use the leftovers. BED, BEE, MARY and MOTHER all follow QUEEN, producing the purple category.
  5. Reject attractive but incomplete themes. In particular, do not move MUM into a family group simply because MA and MOTHER seem related.

How NYT Connections works

Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to divide the board into four groups of four. Each group shares a connection, and the categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the easiest, followed by green, blue and purple as the trickiest. A daily puzzle is available through the New York Times Games experience.
