For the U.S. weekend of August 14–16, 2026, five worthwhile new movie options arrive across Netflix, Peacock, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video: an Olivia Wilde relationship comedy, a Sunny Sandler-led teen musical dramedy, a queer coming-of-age romance, Bob Odenkirk’s violent action movie and a Russia-set political satire.
For the U.S. weekend of August 14–16, 2026, the best new movie options are spread across Netflix, Peacock, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video. The lineup covers five distinct moods: a chaotic relationship comedy, a music-driven teen drama, a queer coming-of-age romance, a violent action-thriller and a Russia-set political satire.
Four of these films are listed as arriving in subscription-service libraries on Friday, August 14. The Invite is the exception: it is available on Prime Video from August 10 as a digital rental or purchase, not as a movie included with a standard Prime Video subscription.

Olivia Wilde directs and stars in this relationship comedy alongside Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton and Seth Rogen. Much of the story unfolds during a dinner party in an apartment, where two couples’ marital problems—and their unconventional relationship dynamics—turn an already awkward evening into comic chaos.
The Invite is the weekend’s paid digital option. It is listed for buy or rent on Prime Video from August 10, 2026, so viewers should not assume that a regular Prime subscription includes it. That distinction makes it a different proposition from the four subscription-streaming arrivals below, but it may be the strongest fit for anyone specifically looking for an adult ensemble comedy built around escalating social discomfort.
2. Don’t Say Good Luck — Netflix, August 14
Best for: viewers looking for a warm, music-forward coming-of-age watch.
Sunny Sandler leads Don’t Say Good Luck as Sophie Birenbaum, a high-school musical lead whose ambitions become increasingly difficult to manage as problems at home begin to overwhelm her. The film centers on Sophie’s school production of Waitress, combining the pressures of performing with a family life that is becoming more chaotic by the day.

Netflix’s official 2026 movie guide lists the film for August 14, 2026. The premise and cast make this the broadest easy recommendation of the weekend for people who enjoy accessible teen dramas, school productions and stories about young characters trying to hold their ambitions together while their families come apart. The available information supports that audience fit more clearly than any sweeping claim about its overall quality.
3. Girls Like Girls — Peacock, August 14
Best for: viewers seeking a tender LGBTQ+ coming-of-age romance.
Girls Like Girls follows 17-year-old Coley, who moves to a small Oregon town to live with her estranged father. There, she develops a romantic connection with Sonya, a charismatic local girl. The film has been characterized in the cited coverage as personal and visually distinctive, with its emotional focus placed on first love, identity and the disorientation of starting over.

The movie arrives on Peacock on August 14, 2026, following a limited theatrical run. In other words, this is its Peacock library debut—not its theatrical premiere. That makes it a particularly good choice for viewers who missed the earlier cinema release and want a more intimate teen romance rather than a broad studio comedy or effects-driven action film.
To watch on Peacock, check the service’s U.S. catalog on or after the listed date. Streaming schedules can change, and availability outside the United States may differ.
4. Normal — HBO Max, August 14

The result is not a conventional prestige crime drama. The Associated Press describes Normal as a hyperviolent Midwestern Western that plays with familiar genre conventions. Its appeal is likely to come from the collision of small-town lawman imagery, action-movie brutality and darkly comic exaggeration.
Normal is scheduled to stream on HBO Max beginning August 14, 2026. Treat the violence warning as part of the recommendation rather than a footnote: this is the clearest pick for an action-oriented weekend viewer, but it is a poor choice for anyone expecting a restrained sheriff procedural or a straightforward crime mystery.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
Paul Dano plays Baranov, with Jude Law, Alicia Vikander, Will Keen, Tom Sturridge and Jeffrey Wright also in the cast. The fictional protagonist and satirical framing are important: this is not a documentary, and it should not be read as a literal historical account of every event or character it depicts. Its subject matter makes it the weekend’s most serious and politically focused option, while the literary source gives it a different texture from the more conventional streaming releases.
The Wizard of the Kremlin is listed for Hulu on August 14, 2026. It is the natural choice for viewers who would rather watch a political power story than a teen romance, family musical or action movie.
How to choose your weekend movie
- Want the funniest adult ensemble? Choose The Invite, but budget for a rental or purchase.
- Want something accessible and music-driven? Start with Don’t Say Good Luck on Netflix.
- Want a romantic coming-of-age story? Pick Girls Like Girls on Peacock.
- Want violence and genre mayhem? Go with Normal on HBO Max.
- Want political ideas and literary drama? Try The Wizard of the Kremlin on Hulu.
One practical note for a multi-service movie weekend
These recommendations are distributed across several apps, so the main complication may be access rather than choice. If your television’s built-in apps are slow or difficult to navigate, an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max can provide a dedicated 4K streaming interface with Wi-Fi 6E and access to entertainment apps. The device does not include the separate subscription fees for Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock or Hulu, and it does not make The Invite free; its benefit is putting the services behind one streaming interface.
Availability note: This guide is focused on the United States and covers August 14–16, 2026. The Invite is listed as available on Prime Video from August 10, while the other four films are listed as August 14 arrivals. Streaming catalogs and release plans can change, so confirm the title and service immediately before watching. The ranking reflects release timing, the available premises, cited coverage and audience fit—not personal viewing or a comprehensive review-score consensus.
