Kanopy explains that the films shown to users depend on the participating institution’s catalog. To check:
#1 Best Overall
- Open Kanopy and search for Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
- Select your library, university, or other institution if prompted.
- Sign in with the credentials or library-card details required by that institution.
- Confirm that the title is available under your institution before planning your viewing.
If the film does not appear, your library may not have the necessary rights even if another library offers it. Kanopy access can also be subject to institution-specific viewing limits or ticket systems.
Where to rent or buy it digitally
Amazon Video
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is listed as a U.S. rental and purchase title on Amazon Video. Search for the film in the Amazon or Prime Video app, then inspect the buttons on the title page for the current rental, purchase, resolution, and entitlement details.
Amazon may display the movie on a Prime Video page even when it is only available as a separate rental or purchase. Unless the page explicitly identifies the title as included with your subscription, do not treat a Prime membership as confirmation that it is included.

For readers who already use Amazon’s storefront, you can rent Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Amazon or look for a digital purchase. Verify the live offer before completing the transaction.
Rank #2
Apple TV Store
The Apple TV Store is another reported U.S. option for renting or buying the movie. In the Apple TV app, search for the title and check whether the current page offers a rental, a purchase, or both.
Apple’s support information distinguishes movie rentals and purchases from Apple TV+ programming. A rental can be streamed or downloaded during its rental period, subject to Apple’s rental rules and the device or account requirements shown at checkout. The existence of a listing does not mean the movie is part of Apple TV+.
If you watch through Apple devices, rent it on Apple TV after checking the current price and format.
Fandango At Home
Fandango At Home is also listed as a U.S. digital rental and purchase outlet. Its offer may differ from the other stores in price, resolution, and purchase terms, so compare the current listing rather than relying on an older price.
Rank #3
You can check Fandango at Home for the live digital version. No permanent price should be assumed: the latest research snapshot showed changing storefront offers rather than a fixed price.
How much does it cost?
The most recent located U.S. snapshot, checked July 29, 2026, showed example prices of approximately $3.99 for some HD rentals, $4.99 for some 4K rentals, and roughly $5.99 to $14.99 for purchases, depending on the store and format.
These are historical snapshot prices, not guaranteed current prices. Digital retailers can change prices, supported resolutions, rental periods, and purchase availability without notice. Check the final checkout screen for the exact total and terms.

Is there a physical copy?
Yes. Paramount’s home-entertainment materials include Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and digital viewing categories, and the film has received a 4K Ultra HD release. A Planes, Trains and Automobiles 4K Blu-ray is the most direct option for viewers who want a permanent copy rather than a title that can move between streaming services.
Before ordering, confirm that the listing is the 4K UHD edition you want—not a standard Blu-ray or DVD—and check the current seller, price, stock status, region compatibility, and included discs. Physical ownership costs more upfront than a single rental but avoids relying on changing digital rights.

Which version of the movie is this?
This guide refers to John Hughes’s 1987 American comedy starring Steve Martin as Neal Page and John Candy as Del Griffith. The story begins when Thanksgiving travel disruptions strand the two men together as Neal tries to get home to Chicago.
The film was released on November 25, 1987, runs approximately 93 minutes, and is rated R. It is a road-trip comedy built around increasingly chaotic travel by plane, train, automobile, and other improvised means. It should not be described as family-friendly without noting the R rating.
