The safest way to reset a Roku TV is to begin with the least destructive option: a system restart. It reboots the television without changing settings. A network reset, factory reset, and Recovery Mode solve different problems and become progressively more disruptive, so choosing the right one matters.
Choose the smallest reset that solves the problem
For most Roku TV problems, start with a system restart, not a factory reset. A restart is the least-invasive option: it can clear a frozen interface, a TV stuck at the Roku logo, or intermittent unresponsiveness without changing your settings.
Roku uses “reset” to describe several different procedures. They are not interchangeable:
| Procedure | What it does | When to use it | What you lose |
|---|---|---|---|
| System restart | Reboots the TV | Freezing, sluggish menus, abnormal behavior, or a TV that will not respond | Nothing; settings remain intact |
| Network connection reset | Clears the saved network connection | Several channels have connection problems, or a voice remote remains unresponsive after new batteries | Saved Wi-Fi connection; you must configure the network again |
| Factory reset | Returns the TV to its out-of-box state | Persistent software problems, confused account linkage, or preparing the TV for another owner | Apps, account information, preferences, settings, and device activation |
| Recovery Mode | Reinstalls the Roku operating system | Only after ordinary reset methods fail | It is the most invasive recovery procedure and still requires setup afterward |
A restart can also be a reasonable low-risk maintenance step when the TV appears to be working normally. It is not a guaranteed speed boost, a Wi-Fi upgrade, or a cure for faulty hardware; it simply gives the system a clean reboot without erasing configuration.

How to restart a Roku TV
If you can control the TV, use the on-screen menu:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Power.
- Select System restart, then confirm.
Some Roku TV models do not show a Power submenu. On those TVs, go from Settings > System directly to System restart.
If the menu is unavailable, disconnect the TV from power, wait at least 10 seconds, and reconnect it. Allow the television time to boot fully. This is a restart, not a factory reset, so your apps, sign-in information, picture settings, and network configuration should remain in place.
When a network reset is the right choice
Use a network connection reset when the problem is specifically related to connectivity rather than the whole TV. It is worth considering when multiple streaming channels cannot connect, or when a voice remote remains unresponsive even after its batteries have been replaced.
The menu path is:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Advanced system settings.
- Select Network connection reset.
- Choose Reset connection.
Afterward, return to the network settings and connect the TV to Wi-Fi again. Have the wireless-network name and password ready. A network reset will not erase your Roku account, installed channels, or other TV preferences, but it does remove the connection information the TV needs to get online.

How to factory-reset a Roku TV
A factory reset is the correct option when you are giving the TV away, selling it, dealing with persistent software or account-linking problems, or starting over after less-invasive troubleshooting has failed. It is not the normal fix for one missing app, ordinary buffering, weak Wi-Fi signal, picture-quality problems, or a defective component.
Before you begin, locate the Roku account email address and password. A factory reset unlinks the TV, removes account and app information, deletes personal preferences, and restores default settings. The TV will not stream again until you complete Guided Setup and activate it. If the television is still associated with a previous owner’s Roku account, that person’s account information may be needed during setup.
If you can reach the menus
Use the factory-reset option in the TV’s system settings. Roku’s exact wording and the confirmation sequence can vary by model and software version, so follow the current model-specific instructions displayed by the TV and Roku’s official support guidance. Read the warning on screen carefully before confirming: this operation is intended to erase the TV’s configuration, not merely restart it.
Once confirmed, the TV will restart as though it were new. You will need to select language and region settings, connect to the internet, sign in or activate the TV, and reinstall or reconfigure the channels and preferences you want to use.

If you cannot reach the menus
Do not assume that one button combination works on every Roku TV. Roku documents different physical-reset methods for different TV families, and the correct control may be on the television rather than the remote.
- Pro Series: These TVs do not have a reset button. Roku’s documented method uses the TV’s Power and Find My Remote buttons, held for 12 seconds.
- Plus Series: Some older models use a pinhole reset button. Newer Plus Series models use Power and Find My Remote.
- Select Series: The method varies. Some early models have a reset button, while others use Power and Find My Remote.
Identify the TV manufacturer, series, and model before pressing or holding anything. Consult the current Roku instructions for that specific model rather than treating the list above as a universal procedure. On most Roku TVs, a rapidly blinking indicator light or status LED indicates that the physical reset has succeeded. The television should then restart in a factory-new state and display the Guided Setup process.
Recovery Mode: the last resort
Recovery Mode reinstalls the Roku operating system. Because it is more invasive than a normal restart or factory reset, Roku recommends attempting it only when other methods have failed to restore normal operation.
Do not use Recovery Mode as a routine response to buffering, a missing channel, a slow menu, or a remote that needs new batteries. If you reach this stage, use the current instructions for the exact Roku TV model and follow them precisely. A model-specific procedure matters here: using the wrong reset method can leave you with an incomplete recovery or an unnecessary loss of configuration.

Why the Roku mobile app may not help immediately after a reset
The Roku mobile app can act as a remote, but it is not a guaranteed substitute during the first minutes after a factory reset. The phone or tablet and the Roku TV must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. A TV being set up for the first time, or one that has just been reset, may not yet be connected to any network, so the app may not detect it.
This creates an easy-to-miss dependency: you may need a physical remote to select the network, enter its password, and complete Guided Setup before the mobile app can take over. If your physical remote is missing or no longer works, a compatible Roku TV remote can make the post-reset setup process much easier. The official Roku TV Remote, model RCC1R, is documented as compatible with all Roku TV models, but it is designed for Roku TVs—not Roku streaming players or Roku audio devices.
Before buying a replacement, confirm that you have a Roku TV with Roku software built into the television. A Roku Players Remote is not automatically interchangeable with a Roku TV remote. Official replacement remotes are also sold through major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy; verify the exact model, current availability, regional pricing, and retailer terms before purchasing.

- The remote is the only thing that seems wrong: Replace or reseat the batteries, check for obstructions, and confirm that you have a Roku TV remote rather than a remote intended for a separate Roku player.
- The TV is frozen or unresponsive: Perform a system restart through Settings > System > Power > System restart, or unplug it for at least 10 seconds if the menus cannot be used.
- Several channels cannot connect: Use Settings > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection, then reconnect Wi-Fi.
- The TV is still unstable: Consider a factory reset only after recording the Roku account credentials and accepting that apps, settings, account linkage, and network information will be erased.
- The menu is inaccessible: Identify the exact TV series before using a physical reset. Button placement and combinations differ among Pro, Plus, and Select models.
- Ordinary reset procedures have failed: Treat Recovery Mode as the final escalation and follow the model-specific instructions.
- You have no remote after the reset: Do not assume the mobile app will discover the TV. Keep or obtain a compatible physical Roku TV remote until setup and Wi-Fi connectivity are complete.
What resetting will not fix
A reset addresses software state, saved network information, or account configuration. It does not repair a failing power supply, damaged display, defective HDMI device, weak home Wi-Fi signal, or physical remote-control fault. It also does not guarantee that the TV will become faster or prevent future problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If only one channel buffers, investigate that channel, the internet connection, or the streaming service before erasing the TV. If the picture is distorted on every input, the issue may be the panel, cable, source device, or other hardware rather than Roku software. Reset only after matching the procedure to the symptom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting my Roku TV erase everything?
No. A system restart reboots the TV without changing its settings. A factory reset erases apps, account information, preferences, network settings, and activation data, returning the TV to its out-of-box setup.

Do I have to reconnect Wi-Fi after a network reset?
Yes, if you use a network connection reset. You will need to enter the wireless-network information and connect the TV to Wi-Fi again. Your apps and Roku account linkage should remain intact.
Can I use the Roku mobile app after a factory reset?
Not necessarily, but the app may not detect a TV during first-time setup or immediately after a reset because the TV may not yet be connected to Wi-Fi. A physical Roku TV remote is the safer way to complete initial setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere is the reset button on a Roku TV?
No single physical reset method is universal. Roku documents different procedures for Pro, Plus, and Select Series TVs, including combinations involving Power and Find My Remote or, on some models, a pinhole reset button.
The Bottom Line
Start with a system restart. Use a network reset only for network-related trouble, reserve a factory reset for persistent software, account, or ownership changes, and treat Recovery Mode as a last resort. Before a factory reset, save your Roku credentials and make sure a compatible physical Roku TV remote is available for setup.
