Spotify for Windows is easiest to manage when you separate its four desktop features: the main app for playback and browsing, the Premium Desktop Miniplayer for compact controls, Premium downloads for offline listening, and Local Files for audio already stored on your PC. This guide covers installation, updates, offline playback, download failures, and the advanced Exclusive Mode setting without treating Spotify’s protected downloads as ordinary files.
What Spotify for Windows supports
Spotify’s Windows desktop app is the best choice when you want full playback controls, downloadable playlists and podcasts, Local Files, or the compact Desktop Miniplayer. The official installation guidance covers Windows 10 and newer.
- Install and update: Get Spotify from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s official download route.
- Miniplayer: Premium desktop users can keep playback controls in a small, movable window while working in another application.
- Offline listening: Premium users can download playlists, albums, and podcasts for playback without an internet connection.
- Local Files: Play audio files legally stored on your Windows computer through Spotify’s library.
- Advanced audio: Windows Desktop users can enable Exclusive Mode for a selected audio device, including an external DAC or audio interface.
Spotify’s labels and button positions can change as the desktop client is updated. If a control is not exactly where this guide describes it, update the app first and look for an equivalent control in the current player or three-dot menu.
How to install Spotify on Windows 10 or newer
Use one of Spotify’s official installation routes: the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s own Windows download page. Avoid third-party download sites and unofficial “modified” installers.

- WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
- PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP: For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
- Open the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s official download route.
- Install the Spotify desktop app.
- Launch Spotify and sign in to your existing account, or create an account.
- Start a track or podcast and confirm that playback works.
Test ordinary playback before changing download, audio, or account settings. This makes it easier to tell whether a later problem is caused by Spotify itself, Windows audio, an account limitation, or a setting you changed.
Reinstalling Spotify when the installation is corrupted
If Spotify will not open, repeatedly crashes, refuses to play anything, or behaves as though its local data is damaged, reinstalling can be a useful troubleshooting step.
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to Apps > Apps & Features (the wording may differ slightly by Windows build).
- Find Spotify, select it, and choose Uninstall.
- Install Spotify again from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s official site.
- Sign in and test playback before downloading your music again.
How to update Spotify on Windows
Update Spotify before troubleshooting the Miniplayer, playback, or downloads. Spotify indicates that a desktop update is available by displaying a blue dot beside your profile picture.
- Open Spotify.
- Look beside your profile picture for a blue dot.
- Select your profile picture.
- Choose Update Spotify now.
- Allow the app to restart, then test playback again.
Spotify’s interface and release numbering change frequently, so there is no reliable reason to use a particular version number as a general installation target. If the update option does not appear, the app may already be current, or the update may be delivered through the Microsoft Store instead.

The Desktop Miniplayer is a Premium feature for Spotify’s desktop app. It opens a small, movable, resizable window with playback controls so you can keep listening while working in another application.
- Open the updated Spotify desktop app.
- Start playing a track, podcast, or other supported content.
- Look in the lower-right control area of the player for the Miniplayer control. Spotify has placed it between the volume and full-screen controls, although the exact icon or position can change.
- Select the control to open the compact player.
- Drag the Miniplayer to a convenient part of the desktop.
- Resize the window if you want a smaller or larger view.
- Click the artist, song, or album area when you need to return to the full Spotify window for browsing.
The Miniplayer is designed for playback control, not as a replacement for Spotify’s complete browsing interface. If you cannot find it:

- Update Spotify and restart the app.
- Play content first; some controls may not be prominent until playback begins.
- Check the lower-right player controls and any overflow or three-dot menu.
- Reinstall only after ordinary update and restart steps fail, remembering that reinstalling removes offline downloads.
Spotify can roll out desktop features gradually, so a Premium subscriber may not see precisely the same control placement or availability as another user immediately.
How to download music and podcasts for offline listening
Spotify Premium users can download albums, playlists, and podcasts in the Windows desktop app. Downloads remain controlled by Spotify and are playable inside Spotify; they are not exported audio files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download a playlist, album, or podcast
- Connect to the internet.
- Open the album, playlist, or podcast you want to save.
- Select Download.
- Wait until the download indicator shows that the content has finished downloading.
- Before travelling, open the downloaded content and play something from it once.
Spotify’s documented desktop flow does not provide a direct download button for an individual song. To save one song, add it to a playlist and download that playlist.
Spotify allows downloads of up to 10,000 tracks across as many as five devices. The account must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep offline downloads active. Connect before a long trip rather than waiting until you are already offline.
Enable Offline Mode
Downloading content and enabling Offline Mode are separate actions. Downloaded content can normally be used while the app has no connection, but Offline Mode lets you ensure that Spotify does not try to play material that was not saved locally.
- Open Spotify’s three-dot menu.
- Choose File.
- Select Offline Mode.
In Offline Mode, anything that was not downloaded is grayed out and unavailable. If the playlist or podcast you expected to use is unavailable, it was not downloaded to that Windows installation, or its offline availability has expired.

Fix Spotify downloads that fail, stall, or disappear
Work through these checks in order. They cover the common causes without deleting local Spotify data unnecessarily.
The Download button is missing
- Check that you are using a Premium account. Offline downloading is a Premium feature.
- Confirm that you opened the Windows desktop app rather than relying on a browser experience with different controls.
- Make sure you are viewing an album, playlist, or podcast. Spotify’s documented desktop flow does not download an individual song directly.
The download is stuck or will not begin
- Confirm that the computer is connected to the internet and that other websites or services work.
- Check available storage on the Windows drive. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory in its offline-download troubleshooting guidance.
- Check whether the account has already reached the five-device download limit.
- Temporarily disable utilities that automatically clear caches, delete app data, or aggressively save battery or disk space. Such tools can remove Spotify’s local download data.
- Restart Spotify and try the download again.
- Update the app before attempting more drastic repairs.
- Reinstall Spotify if the problem continues, but download the content again afterward.
Downloads disappeared after reinstalling
This is expected rather than evidence that your playlists were deleted from your account. Reinstalling removes the local Spotify app data, including downloaded content. Sign in again and download the playlists, albums, and podcasts to the new installation.
Offline Mode shows content as unavailable
Unavailable or grayed-out content was not downloaded to this installation, was only partially downloaded, or is no longer active offline. Reconnect to the internet, open the relevant content, and download it again. Also check that you have connected the account online within the last 30 days.
Downloads vanish after a long trip
Reconnect the Windows computer to the internet and open Spotify. Spotify requires an online account connection at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. If content still does not appear, check storage, the device limit, and whether Spotify was reinstalled or cleaned by a maintenance utility.

Local Files: play audio already stored on your PC
Local Files is separate from Spotify Premium downloads. It lets the Windows desktop app expose audio files legally stored on your computer. It does not bypass Spotify licensing and should not be used to obtain or play unauthorized copies.

- [IMMERSIVE SOUND EXPERIENCE] - The incredible loud sound and deep bass are delivered by a larger speaker driver and passive radiator.
- [INCREDIBLE LOUD SOUND] - Upgraded to 2.25-inch larger speaker driver, this enhancement boosts the sound volume by at least 10% compared with 2.0-inch speaker driver.

- [NO EXTRA BUTTONS NEEDED] - The plug-n-play speakers come without separate volume control buttons. You can easily adjust the volume directly on your computer system, eliminating the need to adjust both the system and speaker volume like with other PC speakers.
- Open the profile menu in Spotify.
- Choose Settings.
- Scroll to Library.
- Enable Show Local Files.
- Turn on the folders Spotify lists, or choose the option to add another source folder.
- Open Your Library > Local Files.
If a file does not appear, check that it is in one of the enabled folders, is stored locally rather than only in an unavailable cloud placeholder, and is a legally stored audio file that Spotify can read. Local Files are your computer’s files; they do not count as Spotify catalog downloads for offline listening.
Exclusive Mode and USB audio hardware
Exclusive Mode is an advanced Windows Desktop setting. When enabled, Spotify takes control of the selected audio device’s processing path. This can be useful with external equipment such as a DAC or audio interface, but it is not needed for ordinary Spotify playback, Miniplayer use, or offline listening.
The trade-off is important: while Spotify has exclusive access, other programs may be unable to play sound through that device. Avoid it if you need system sounds, browser audio, games, or video calls to use the same speakers, headphones, or interface at the same time.
If you are using a dedicated desktop listening setup, an optional USB DAC for Windows audio can provide a separate audio output for Spotify’s Windows Exclusive Mode. It is not needed to install Spotify, use the Miniplayer, or listen offline. A DAC is not a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade: the result depends on the computer’s existing audio hardware, headphones or speakers, output settings, and your preferences.
For the signal path Spotify describes as closest to the mastered audio, its advanced guidance also advises considering these settings:
- Disable Normalize Volume.
- Ensure Equalizer is off.
These are listening preferences, not universal requirements. Normalization can be useful when you want more consistent loudness between tracks, and an equalizer may be desirable when you intentionally want to adjust the sound.

When should you reinstall Spotify?
Reinstall after the lower-impact fixes have failed: update Spotify, restart the app, check the internet connection and storage, verify the account and device limits, and inspect Windows audio output. Reinstalling is especially reasonable when Spotify will not launch, crashes repeatedly, or has persistent playback and download behavior that survives an update.

Quick Spotify for Windows troubleshooting checklist
- Playback fails: check the selected Windows output device, volume, mute state, and internet connection.
- App behaves strangely: restart Spotify, then look for the blue-dot update prompt beside the profile picture.
- Miniplayer is missing: confirm Premium eligibility, update, restart, and check the player’s lower-right controls.
- Downloads will not start: check Premium status, connection, free storage, and the five-device limit.
- Downloads disappear: reconnect within the 30-day requirement and check whether Spotify or a cleanup utility removed local data.

- Your own files are missing: enable Show Local Files and select the correct source folder under Settings > Library.
- Other apps lose audio: disable Exclusive Mode or select a different output device if Spotify is holding exclusive access.
- Nothing helps: uninstall Spotify through Windows Settings and reinstall it officially, then download offline content again.
Frequently Asked Questions
