Netflix is the best first stop for new August 2026 movie premieres, led by the sci-fi thriller The Last House and the late-month crime thriller The Whisper Man. Prime Video has the month’s clearest documentary pick in Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter, Hulu is strongest for genre catalog viewing with MaXXXine and Ex Machina, and Max brings a Spanish-language mystery, franchise horror, and recognizable older films.
This U.S. guide separates new-to-the-service premieres from older catalog additions and flags titles whose schedules or descriptions need another check. Dates were researched on August 12, 2026, so availability can change.
The quick answer: what is actually worth watching
For a brand-new movie experience, start with The Last House on Netflix, a contained sci-fi survival thriller, or The Whisper Man, a crime thriller built around a kidnapped child and an old serial-killer case. Max has the strongest twist-driven companion pick in The Invisible Guest. Prime Video’s standout new documentary is Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter, while Hulu’s best genre pair is MaXXXine and Ex Machina.
Netflix has the clearest selection of August 2026 originals and premieres. Max, Prime Video, and Hulu are particularly useful if you want recognizable catalog movies or recent films arriving on a new service. In this guide, new means newly added or newly premiering on the named service in the U.S.; it does not necessarily mean a first-ever release.

New movies on Netflix in August 2026
Netflix has the month’s most obvious group of new premieres, covering contained science fiction, youth-oriented comedy, documentary, anime, and crime thriller.
The Last House — August 7
Genre: Sci-fi thriller
Best for: Viewers who want a high-concept survival story in a confined setting
Directed by Louis Leterrier, The Last House places a family of four inside a home that has become a sealed environment. As resources dwindle, the family must deal with an unexplained threat outside—or possibly within the situation itself. Greta Lee and Wagner Moura lead the cast.
This is the strongest Netflix choice for a fresh science-fiction night because its central hook is immediately clear: a family is trapped, supplies are limited, and the threat is not explained away in the premise. It is also a useful pick for viewers who prefer suspense driven by a small number of characters rather than a large-scale space or superhero spectacle.
The Ribbon Hero — August 8
Genre: Anime and fantasy action
Best for: Anime viewers and anyone looking for a more unusual August option
The Ribbon Hero is Yuki Igarashi’s feature debut. It follows a lone hero who defies a harsh destiny in a stylized fantasy-action world. The available schedule identifies it as an anime feature but provides limited additional detail, so it is best treated as a targeted recommendation rather than a universal pick.
A Child of My Own — August 13
Genre: Documentary
Best for: DocumentaryTube readers who prefer unsettling real-life stories
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Maite Alberdi’s feature documentary examines a woman who fakes a pregnancy and becomes trapped in a deception with increasingly serious consequences. That premise makes A Child of My Own the Netflix choice for viewers seeking uncomfortable real-life material rather than a conventional narrative movie.
Don’t Say Good Luck — August 14
Genre: Dramatic comedy
Best for: A family-centered, youth-oriented dramedy
Rank #2

- LED-backlit LCD screen - With reliable and long-lasting LED lighting, this LCD screen delivers a wide range of colors and contrast for a memorable viewing experience.
- Watch what you want - Stream over 1.5 million movies and TV episodes. Watch favorites with subscriptions to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and more. Subscription fees may apply.

Julia Hart’s coming-of-age film follows Sophie Birenbaum, a high-school-musical lead whose family life becomes more dramatic than the production onstage. Sunny Sandler, Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Stephanie Beatriz, Bebe Neuwirth, and Steve Buscemi are part of the ensemble.
This is the accessible Netflix pick for viewers who want a character-centered film with family tension and a lighter dramatic-comedy frame. It is a different kind of August recommendation from the darker The Last House and The Whisper Man.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Whisper Man — August 28
Genre: Thriller
Best for: Viewers who want a new crime story with a prominent cast
James Ashcroft adapts Alex North’s bestselling novel. The story follows a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is abducted. To find him, the father seeks help from his estranged father, a retired detective, and confronts connections to an old serial-killer case.
Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott give Netflix its most recognizable new thriller ensemble of the month. The film is the best late-August choice for viewers who want family drama, a missing-child investigation, and a past case that refuses to stay buried.
New movies on Max in August 2026
Max’s August list mixes new-to-the-service films with older catalog favorites. The schedule is useful for planning but is explicitly subject to change and may not be comprehensive, so confirm the title in the Max app when you are ready to watch.
The Invisible Guest — August 7
Genre: Spanish-language mystery thriller
Best for: Twist-driven crime-film fans
The Invisible Guest is Max’s strongest mystery recommendation and a natural companion to Netflix’s The Whisper Man. Choose it when the main requirement is a tightly constructed crime mystery in Spanish rather than a new English-language premiere.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 — August 7
Genre: Horror
Best for: Franchise horror viewers
The Lionsgate sequel arrives on the same day as The Invisible Guest. It is the obvious Max option for viewers already invested in The Strangers films. As a sequel, it may be more satisfying if you are familiar with the series.
Mother Mary — August 21
Genre: Drama
Best for: Viewers interested in a contemporary A24 release and character-driven drama
Rank #3

- Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.
The A24 film is scheduled for Max on August 21. The available schedule confirms the title, date, and distributor but does not provide enough verified synopsis detail to characterize its plot further here. That makes it a watchlist pick rather than a premise-based recommendation.
The Cabin in the Woods — August 30
Genre: Horror comedy
Best for: A familiar, rewatchable genre movie
The 2011 film joins Max late in the month. Its combination of horror and self-aware genre play makes it a dependable catalog choice when you want something established rather than an August original.
More Max additions on August 1
Max also lists Stand by Me, Road House, Sicario, Practical Magic, and Murder on the Orient Express for August 1. They cover coming-of-age drama, action, crime thriller, fantasy romance, and mystery. These are older catalog additions, not new 2026 releases, but they broaden Max’s August lineup considerably.
New movies on Prime Video in August 2026
Prime Video has a particularly deep August 1 catalog drop, plus several later-month titles. The most clearly characterized new recommendation is a sports documentary, while the catalog additions make the service useful for viewers who want recognizable films without waiting for a new premiere.
Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter — August 20
Genre: Sports documentary
Best for: Viewers interested in elite competition, athlete psychology, and behind-the-scenes access
Directed by Jason Hehir, the feature-length documentary examines Novak Djokovic’s career, upbringing, competitive psychology, training, and public image. It uses interviews and behind-the-scenes access to build a profile of the tennis player.
For documentary-first viewers, this is the clearest Prime Video pick of the month. Amazon says the film will premiere exclusively on Prime Video worldwide on August 20, although the broader availability note for this guide remains U.S.-specific.
The Last Sunrise — August 26
Genre: Romantic drama
Best for: Viewers looking for an emotional new romance
The Prime Original follows a college student with a chronic illness who travels to Mallorca with her mother. She falls for a local young man while facing worsening health and family secrets. Maia Reficco, Eva Longoria, and Fernando Lindez star.

Recognizable Prime Video catalog additions

- Pulp Fiction: Quentin Tarantino’s influential 1994 crime film.
- Interstellar: Christopher Nolan’s expansive science-fiction film.
- Fargo: A crime-film selection.
- The Usual Suspects: A mystery and crime pick.
- Licorice Pizza: A coming-of-age drama.
- Challengers: A sports-centered romantic drama.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes arrives on August 2, giving the month another substantial science-fiction franchise option.
These titles are especially useful if you want something familiar: Pulp Fiction for a frequently discussed crime classic, Interstellar for large-scale science fiction, or Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for a recent franchise film.
Additional Prime Video titles to track
The August schedule also lists The Gates for August 7, Is God Is for August 19, Back to the 90s for August 21, and Nickel Boys for August 27. These are confirmed schedule entries, including 2026 or relatively recent titles, but the available information does not provide enough verified synopsis detail to rank them responsibly against the better-characterized recommendations above.
Important Prime Video distinction: Amazon’s August listing covers Prime Video and the broader Prime Video Store. Do not assume every listed film is included at no additional charge with a Prime membership. Check each title’s current detail page to see whether it is included, available to rent, or available to buy.

MaXXXine — August 3
Genre: Horror thriller
Best for: Horror fans and viewers following Ti West’s X trilogy
Hulu lists Ti West’s 2024 film alongside Pearl and X on August 3. That makes MaXXXine the clearest Hulu recommendation for horror viewers, particularly those who want to watch the broader trilogy rather than approach the film as an isolated catalog title.
Ex Machina — August 3
Genre: Science-fiction thriller
Best for: Cerebral science fiction and technology-focused suspense

Alex Garland’s 2014 film is Hulu’s best alternative to the survival premise of Netflix’s The Last House. Pick Ex Machina when you want a more intimate, idea-driven science-fiction thriller rather than a family trapped in a sealed home.
All of Us Strangers — August 22
Genre: Romantic fantasy drama
Best for: Emotionally driven, intimate relationship stories
Hulu lists the 2023 film for August 22. Its late-month arrival gives Hulu a prominent choice for viewers seeking a personal romantic drama with a fantasy element and a more intimate scale than the month’s thrillers and franchise films.
Jurassic Park — August 1
Genre: Science-fiction adventure
Best for: Family-and-franchise viewing, subject to the film’s rating and household preferences
The original 1993 Jurassic Park is Hulu’s clearest familiar catalog pick. It is a good choice when the goal is a recognizable science-fiction adventure rather than a new-to-2026 film.
More Hulu additions
Hulu’s schedule lists Busboys for August 14 and Desert Warrior for August 28. The available listings confirm the dates and titles but do not provide a synopsis, genre, cast, or distributor. Treat both as films to keep an eye on, not as fully characterized recommendations. Their descriptions and availability should be checked again closer to release.
Which service should you choose?
- Choose Netflix for a new August premiere.
- The Last House is the best starting point for science-fiction suspense, while The Whisper Man is the late-month thriller to mark on your calendar. Documentary viewers should also look at A Child of My Own.
- Choose Max for a mystery, sequel, or reliable catalog rewatch.
- The Invisible Guest is the most direct pick for twist-driven crime, The Strangers: Chapter 2 is for franchise horror fans, and The Cabin in the Woods is the late-month horror-comedy fallback.
- Choose Prime Video for sports documentary depth or major catalog names.
- Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter is the strongest documentary selection. For familiar viewing, start with Pulp Fiction, Interstellar, Fargo, or Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, while checking whether each title is included or sold separately.
- Choose Hulu for horror, cerebral science fiction, or an intimate drama.
- Start with MaXXXine if you want horror, Ex Machina if you want technology-focused science fiction, or All of Us Strangers if you want a relationship-centered fantasy drama.
If you only watch one movie

- One new thriller: The Whisper Man on Netflix, arriving August 28.
- One horror pick: MaXXXine on Hulu, with Pearl and X also listed for the same date.
- One cerebral science-fiction movie: Ex Machina on Hulu.
- One documentary: Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter on Prime Video.
- One familiar catalog movie: Pulp Fiction on Prime Video or Jurassic Park on Hulu.
Optional movie-night setup
You do not need new equipment if your television already has the relevant apps. If it does not, a 4K streaming device can provide access to services such as Netflix, Max, Prime Video, and Hulu through a compatible TV or display. Check the device, television, and subscription requirements before buying; the hardware is optional, not a prerequisite for any movie on this list.
U.S. availability and schedule notes
This is a U.S. streaming guide based on schedules checked on August 12, 2026. A service may announce a date without guaranteeing that it will remain unchanged, and catalog licensing can vary by country. Max’s published August schedule is specifically subject to change, and Hulu’s entries for Busboys and Desert Warrior have limited available detail.

If you are publishing or updating this guide after August 12, recheck the listings before publication, especially titles arriving from August 14 onward. The most important follow-up dates are August 20 for Prime Video’s Djokovic documentary and August 28 for Netflix’s The Whisper Man and Hulu’s Desert Warrior. Confirm the movie’s current service page on the day you plan to watch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does new mean the movie was released for the first time in August 2026?
In this guide, new means newly added or newly premiering on Netflix, Max, Prime Video, or Hulu during August 2026. It does not necessarily mean the movie is a first-ever release.
What are the best documentaries new to these streaming services in August?
Netflix has the strongest selection for new documentary-oriented viewing with A Child of My Own, while Prime Video’s Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter is the clearest sports-documentary pick. Both are different in subject and tone: A Child of My Own is an unsettling real-life deception story, while the Djokovic film examines an athlete’s career, psychology, training, and public image.
Are all of the August Prime Video movies included with a Prime membership?
Not necessarily. Amazon’s August schedule distinguishes Prime Video programming from the broader Prime Video Store. A listed title may be included with Prime, or it may be available to rent or buy separately. Check the individual title page before assuming it is included.
Can the August movie dates or availability change?
Yes, the schedules are U.S.-specific and can change. Max’s August list is explicitly subject to change, and the available Hulu schedule provides limited information for Busboys and Desert Warrior. Recheck the service listing, especially for films arriving after August 12, 2026.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Netflix is the best first stop for new August premieres, Prime Video has the month’s clearest sports documentary, Hulu leads the genre catalog with MaXXXine and Ex Machina, and Max is strongest for mystery, horror, and dependable catalog viewing. Check U.S. availability and Prime Video pricing before starting a movie.
