Yes—but only conditionally. X formally allows some consensually produced adult nudity and sexual material, including content showing breasts, buttocks and genitals. The permission requires consenting adults, a content warning and restricted placement; it is not blanket permission to post any sexual image.
X formally allows some consensually produced adult nudity and sexual material on the platform, including content showing breasts, buttocks and genitals. But this is not unrestricted permission to post pornography. Under X’s Adult Content Policy, the material must involve consenting adults, carry an appropriate content warning, and not be placed in highly visible parts of an account or the service.
The policy is dated May 2024 and made explicit a position that had largely existed in practice under Twitter. It covers photographic, animated and AI-generated material—including cartoons, hentai and anime—when the content is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal.
What X now permits
X’s policy describes “Adult Content” as consensually produced and distributed depictions of adult nudity or sexual behavior. Its examples include:
#1 Best Overall
- Privacy Protection and Lens Care: Avoid private information from hacking while preventing dust-fall and scratching of the camera lens
- Multiple Compatibility: Suitable for Logitech webcam C920x, C920, C922, C930e, C922x Pro Stream HD Camera
- Artful Design: Modeled and designed exclusively to fit the above devices from Logitech and make it more stylish
- Easy Flip Mechanism: Can be turned 180 angle and easily take the cover off when flipping more than 180
- Simple Installation: Attaches securely to your Logitech webcam without leaving residue, allowing for quick and hassle-free setup
- Visible genitals or an anus when exposed, prominently featured or the focus of the image;
- Visible female nipples;
- Fully nude buttocks;
- Explicit vaginal, oral or anal sex;
- Sexual penetration or the use of sex toys;
- Clothed sexual simulation;
- Visible sexual arousal; and
- Sexual use of bodily fluids.
The headline shorthand—“butts, breasts and genitals”—therefore reflects examples in X’s own policy. It does not mean that every photograph containing one of those body parts is automatically permitted. Context, consent, labeling, presentation and the other X Rules still matter.
The conditions are the important part
1. The people depicted must be consenting adults
The permission applies to material that is both consensually produced and consensually distributed. Adult pornography being allowed does not override X’s rules against nonconsensual intimate media.
X’s separate non-consensual nudity policy prohibits intimate photographs or videos made or shared without the consent of the people involved. It specifically identifies examples such as hidden-camera footage, creepshots, upskirt images, digitally manipulated intimate images and intimate media recorded in a private setting without an intention for public distribution.
That distinction is consequential: consensual adult pornography may be allowed when properly marked, while the original poster of intimate media created or shared without consent may face permanent suspension. “The subject is an adult” is not the same as “the subject consented to this image being made public.”
2. The post must be marked with a content warning
X requires adult material to be placed behind a warning so people who do not want to see it can avoid opening it. The company asks users who regularly post adult material to adjust their media settings so that their images and videos are consistently labeled.
X also says it may adjust an account’s settings when a user repeatedly fails to mark adult posts. A warning is therefore not merely a courtesy or a way to make a borderline post safer; it is part of the policy’s access conditions.

3. Access is restricted for some viewers
According to X’s policy and its account-notice guidance, people under 18 cannot click through to view marked adult content. The same restriction applies to viewers who have not included a birth date on their profile.
This helps explain X’s stated rationale: the company presents the policy as a balance between users’ autonomy to create and distribute adult material and the interests of children and adults who do not want to encounter it.
4. Adult material cannot be placed in prominent account locations
X does not permit adult content in certain highly visible areas of the service. The policy names:
- Live video;
- Profile pictures;
- Profile headers;
- List banners; and
- Community cover photos.
Material in those locations must be removed. X says repeated violations can result in read-only mode or suspension. In practical terms, a user may be able to post marked adult material in an ordinary post while still being prohibited from using the same material as a profile image or account header.
What is not treated as Adult Content
X’s policy also identifies categories that do not require the same adult-content warning because the material is not presented as pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal. Examples include:
- Educational material, such as breast-cancer awareness;
- Medical material, including post-surgery breast augmentation or mastectomy images;
- Partial or digitally obscured nudity, such as some modeling or beach photographs;
- Activist campaigns involving nudity;
- Artistic nudity in paintings or sculptures;
- Political parody or satire; and
- Non-arousing humor or memes.
These examples are not a universal exemption from every other X rule. A post can be educational, artistic or political in intent and still raise separate issues involving harassment, privacy, graphic content or other prohibited conduct.

What remains prohibited
The adult-content policy does not legalize or permit all sexual imagery. X continues to prohibit, among other things:
- Nonconsensual nudity and intimate media;
- Child sexual exploitation;
- Violent sexual conduct;
- Unwanted sexual content and graphic objectification;
- Bestiality;
- Necrophilia; and
- Promotion or solicitation of sexual services.
The consent requirement also applies to distribution. An image can have been consensually created but still be shared in a way the people depicted did not authorize. Reposting, leaking or circulating private intimate media is not converted into permitted adult content simply because the person shown is over 18.
Posting permission does not guarantee monetization
One of the easiest ways to misunderstand the change is to treat permission to publish as permission to earn money from the post or account. Those are separate questions.
X’s current Content Monetization Policies classify adult and sexual content as a restricted category. The policy lists pornography, nudity, sex acts, sexual organs, sex toys, sexual bodily fluids, adult entertainment, sex-focused dating sites, adult sites and sexually explicit accessories or clothing among the types of content that may face restricted monetization.
Recommended Free Tools
X says policy violations can lead to reduced recommendation amplification, suspension or revocation of earning features, removal or concealment of content, or suspension from the service. Even when a post survives under the publication rules, creators should not assume that it is eligible for advertising, subscriptions or other earning features.
News coverage at the time also highlighted the distinction. The Associated Press described the announcement as formalizing a policy that had already existed in practice, while Ars Technica reported that adult material was not eligible for ordinary advertising promotion and could not be placed in prominent account surfaces.

How to read the headline accurately
The most accurate interpretation is:
X explicitly allows some consensual adult nudity and sexual behavior—including images that show breasts, buttocks or genitals—provided the content is appropriately labeled, access-controlled and posted in an allowed location.
The inaccurate interpretation is:
Anyone can upload any sexual image to X without restriction.

The policy clarifies publication rules; it does not remove the requirements for consent, adult status, warnings or restricted placement. It also does not supersede X’s nonconsensual-intimate-media rules, its prohibitions on exploitation and violence, or its separate monetization standards.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical compliance checklist
Before posting adult material, a user should be able to answer “yes” to all of these questions:
- Are all depicted people adults?
- Did everyone consent to both production and distribution?
- Is the content properly marked as sensitive or adult material?
- Is the post outside the prohibited prominent locations?
- Does it avoid exploitation, violence, unwanted sexualization, sexual-service solicitation and other prohibited conduct?
- Am I separating the question of being allowed to post from the question of monetization?
If the answer to any of the first five questions is uncertain, the policy should not be treated as permission to publish. The safest course is not to post material when consent, age or distribution rights cannot be established.

Can someone post a private or leaked nude image if the person is an adult?
No. X prohibits intimate images made or distributed without consent, including hidden-camera material, creepshots, upskirt images and private intimate media shared publicly without authorization. Digitally manipulated intimate images can also violate the non-consensual-intimate-media policy.
Who can view marked adult content on X?
Adult content must be placed behind a content warning. X says users under 18 and people who have not added a birth date to their profile cannot click to view marked adult content.
Can creators monetize adult content on X?
No. X’s monetization policy treats pornography, nudity, sex acts and related sexual content as restricted categories. A post may be allowed to remain online while still being ineligible for, or limited within, X’s earning and advertising systems.
Does every nude or partially nude image require an adult-content warning?
X’s policy excludes some educational, medical, activist, artistic, political and non-arousing humorous material from its definition of Adult Content. Other X rules can still apply to those posts.

The Bottom Line
X’s rule is a conditional permission, not a free-for-all: consensual adult nudity and sexual content can be posted when properly labeled and kept out of prominent account locations, but nonconsensual intimate media, exploitation and other prohibited sexual material remain banned. Publication permission also does not guarantee monetization.
