How does The Final Reckoning end?
The finale resolves the Entity crisis through a coordinated physical and technical operation, not a simple shootout or explosive destruction. Ethan’s team needs two things: the Entity’s original source code, recovered from the Sevastopol submarine, and Luther’s program designed to act as a poison pill against the AI.
Once those elements are combined, the Entity becomes vulnerable to capture. Grace then uses her pickpocketing skills to take a prepared optical drive at the precise moment required to trap the AI inside it. The operation gives the team a way to remove the Entity from its wider digital reach.

The distinction between neutralized and destroyed is important. The film shows the Entity being isolated inside a drive; it does not show every possible copy being erased or the drive itself being destroyed. The drive is therefore proof that the immediate threat has been contained, but it also remains a potentially dangerous physical object. That lingering risk is an interpretation of the final image, not a confirmed promise of another sequel.
Does Ethan Hunt die?
No. Ethan Hunt survives. After escaping the final operation, he appears in the closing sequence in London’s Trafalgar Square with Grace, Benji, Paris, and Degas.
The ending has a farewell-like quality, but the movie does not show Ethan dying, retiring, or formally handing the IMF mission to someone else. He is alive and still has the drive containing the isolated Entity. That leaves his future open without confirming that another film will follow.
Why does Luther die?
Luther Stickell makes the film’s decisive sacrifice. He stays behind during the escape and helps limit the blast, buying Ethan enough time to get clear and complete the mission. Luther’s death is the major human cost of stopping the Entity.

It also gives the finale an uncomfortable thematic reversal. Ethan’s defining principle has been refusing to treat people as expendable. Yet Luther chooses to spend his own life so the others can survive. Luther’s death also explains why Ethan’s survival does not feel like a simple victory. The Entity is contained, but the team cannot return to the status quo. One of Ethan’s oldest and most trusted allies is gone, and the final reunion is shaped by that absence.

What happens to Grace?
Grace survives and performs the operation’s most important final handoff. Her ability to steal an object without being noticed becomes essential when she takes the prepared drive at the exact instant needed to capture the Entity.
That moment completes Grace’s character arc. She begins the story as a thief primarily looking out for herself. By the ending, she is trusted with the key physical action that saves the team and the world. In Trafalgar Square, she gives the drive to Ethan.

Benji, Paris, and Degas all survive the final operation and appear in the Trafalgar Square gathering.

The twist mainly serves character motivation and franchise continuity. It does not lead into a post-credits sequence, and the film does not end with Briggs taking over Ethan’s entire role.
What happens in the final Trafalgar Square scene?
The Trafalgar Square sequence is the film’s true ending. After the dangerous operation, Ethan reunites with Grace, Benji, Paris, and Degas. Grace hands Ethan the drive containing the isolated Entity, and the group then separates.
Emotionally, the scene plays like a goodbye to the team Ethan has built through years of sacrifice. Everyone going their own way suggests that the crisis has changed them and that their shared mission may be over, at least for now.
But the scene is not an explicit retirement announcement. Ethan remains alive, the drive remains in his possession, and the film does not state that he will never return. The safest reading is that the movie gives Ethan a conclusive chapter while leaving the broader franchise technically open. An open ending, however, is not the same as a confirmed ninth movie.
Is there a post-credits scene?

What does the lack of a post-credits scene mean?
